The Burning Question*: Should pineapple ever go on a pizza?

Let TheJournal.ie distract you from the ‘serious’ news with one of life’s REAL dilemmas. (*not really)

WE KNOW HOW you feel.

It’s Monday, you have the whole week looming ahead, and you have a lot on you plate.

So do like we do here in TheJournal.ie HQ and get stuck into a serious debate on one of life’s most pressing issues.

Possibly.

This week: Food comes up a lot as a topic of conversation here at TJ, as is the case in most offices. But we’ve never had as ferocious a fight as we did last week when someone mentioned putting pineapple on pizza.

Some agreed the sweet deliciousness was definitely a bonus topping, while others were vehement that the fruit did not belong on the Italian delight.

Where do you stand on this very important matter? Should pineapple ever go on a pizza?

Was waiting for that to pop up :)

Oxford dictionaries have been asked this question before and came up with this conclusion:

“So, the answer to the question is that a tomato is technically the fruit of the tomato plant, but it’s used as a vegetable in cooking.”

No one argues a pineapple is used as a vegetable in cooking!

And, in fairness, I imagine he knows what he’s talking about because personally, I can picture him wearing a pinny… and nothing else… nomonomonom :)

    Method

    For the strawberry stew
Mix all the ingredients with ¾ cup of water in a vessel and cook till all the moisture evaporates and the strawberries become soft.
Remove from the flame, divide into 4 equal portions and keep aside.

    For the banana custard
Mix the custard powder in ¼ cup milk and keep aside.
Heat the remaining milk with the sugar and mix well.
Add the custard powder mixture and vanilla essence and cook over a low flame, stirring continuously till the mixture coats the back of the spoon.
Divide it into 4 equal portions and refrigerate.
Add the bananas and mix well. Keep aside.

    How to proceed
Place a serving of hot strawberry stew in a dessert bowl and pour a portion of chilled custard over it.

I’ll try to stay calm here.
The solution is simple, tough. Pizza is pasta base, tomato, mozzarella, basil, olive oil. Stop.
Yu may have some variations… ham and mushrooms, 4 seaons, etc. Nothing more.
Real pizzerie, in Italy, won;t give you more than 4-5 different type. Everything else, is just a bad rage from the 80s.
Anything else shouldn’t be called pizza. Anything sold processed and frozen shouldn’t be called pizza.
    Simple as that.
Pizza is another thing. Just call this bull$** in another way.

Are we still talking about pineapples here?

Who’s going to set down the rules about what is allowed and not allowed to be called a pizza? There’s already a Neapolitan pizza which I believe is protected so I’m not sure what more you can ask for!

The fact you call Pizza something that simple is not! :-)
It’s like a trademark. You may ignore a costant battle we’re fighting in Italy, against product called is some way, just pretending to be Italian, while they’re not.
Example? Parmigiano-Reggiano. You can call a cheese “Parmigiano” ONLY if it cames frm certain area, made with milk of certains cows, following a strict set of rules. Simple as that,
They should so something like that, also with Pizza. Pizza is something. Anything else maybe similar, BUT can;t be called Pizza. Go in Tuscany, and ask for Bistecca alla Fiorentina (Florentine Steak) and ask “well done”. See what’s the answer… ;)

Pizza is originally made in 4/5 variations. Anything else it;s nother thing. Pinapple on pizza it’s just disgusting too… ;-)

    Proudly,
    Pizza = pasta base?
Surely not I know birth are dough but isn’t the dough for pasta different from that for bread or pizza. Same as that for a pie, cake is different from pancake.

Proudly correct of course Neapolitan has specific ingredients no more no less. Same as bolognese sauce, carbonara etc this is not confined to Italy and its long time that “chefs” went back to sticking to the proper recipes. If they want to add ingredients ok but then don’t call it by the original name. How the hell can you cook a Sauce Bolognese without meat and call it Vegetarian? Doesn’t exist.

Surely the best thing about pizza, and the reason it’s popular in so many countries is the fact that you start with the basic structure; dough, tomato sauce, cheese and then it can be modified to suit every taste. I love pineapple on my pizza but hate mushroom, so the solution is half and half, fruit for me fungi for himself!

Try this recipe Sinead you might be pleasantly surprised.

    Pizza base
Spread a thin layer of peanut butter or alternately Nutella.
Cover with thinly sliced bananas (three large bananas normally does it for me)
Into oven on medium heat for 5 – 7 minutes.
Meanwhile mix some brown sugar with cinnamon (3 table spoons of sugar to half a table spoon of cinnamon)
Remove from oven and sprinkle with sugar/cinnamon. Place under medium grill for 4-5 minutes – checking that the sugar browns but not burns.
Slice with pizza cutter and serve with whipped cream.
    Sweet pizza heaven….

Fried egg on a pizza is particularly good when it also has rashers, bacon, sausages and black pudding (Clonakilty preferred). Oh, and you have to add extra ketchup.
