Mulling it over: Labour Court releases its plan to end Irish Rail dispute

The proposals set out today include pay cuts and changes to working conditions.

IRISH RAIL WORKERS say they will have to consider a recommendation released by the Labour Court today in a bid to end the long-running dispute about money at the company.

The proposals set out today include pay cuts and changes to working conditions.

The majority of unions at the company rejected the proposals put forward by the LRC in February which would have seen pay cuts ranging from 1.7 per cent to just over 6 per cent, lasting for up to three years.

Today’s recommendations are somewhat similar to the LRC plans but workers said that it has taken on board some of the issues they had with the previous proposal.

Irish Rail has said major changes to the company are needed to save money and ensure that it stays financially viable.

“This Labour Court recommendation does take account of some concerns expressed by our members in relation to the possibility of offsetting some costs from non-payroll areas and a guarantee in relation to the duration of an agreement,” said Paul Cullen of SIPTU.

“It is also noted that the recommendation includes a reduction in payroll. It should also be noted that our members have already rejected pay cuts in a previous ballot”.

SIPTU workers at the company are set to meet on Thursday ahead of a ballot of all members on whether or not to accept the recommendations.

this is not the drivers fault. The amount of mismanagement in our transport companies is horrendous. Fares are very expensive and the leap card scheme is rip-off. Here’s an example of said mismanagement.I wanted to travel from still organ to killester dart station on Saturday last for work and the advertised fare from still organ park to blackrock station is 1.80 and then the leap card fare from blackrock to killester takes 4.60 off your card, so both companies are more than apply to charge overa fiver between them for my trouble… I got the 114 bus and the bus driver asked me where I was headed to on the dart line and I said killester. He was able to print me a ticket that came to 2.50 and that he said would cover the whole of my journey because the 114 is a feeder bus ( which dublin bus don’t kill themselves to tell you, cos I didn’t know it and I only live down the road ) I just showed my tkt to the guy in the dart station and he opened the gate for me and I’m telling everyone about this.. The driver told me that they are purposely told not to tell people of these fares….unfair? Yes…. The drivers take the flak for it in the eyes of the public which is convenient for management and also if the minister is aware of this then that’s unforgivable – I don’t drive so I have to use public transport and I support the drivers all the way!!!

Privatise Rail, if we had a half decent rail network it would spread wealth around the country instead of focusing it on Dublin Cork etc. If people could commute into Dublin like they do into London in a reasonable amt of time it would change this country. We have an 18th century network with communist work practices.

Privatise it don’t make me laugh. fares are expensive now, what will they be like when you privatise, half the lines would be closed because they are not profitable.

You’ve clearly never paid a commuter fare into London, makes Irish Rail’s fares seem ridiculously cheap. There is also the huge population difference which makes running so many routes more feasible than in Ireland.

Did they never of the law of diminishing returns. If they lowered there prices substantially more people would use the trains and they take in more money and return to profit.
