AGSI general secretary John Redmond Sam Boal/Photocall Ireland

Tazers and whistleblowers up for debate during AGSI conference

Members of the 31 AGSI branches will debate range of motions during this week’s conference.

THE ASSOCIATION OF Garda Sergeants and Inspectors (AGSI) will hold its annual conference this week – although Justice Minister Alan Shatter won’t be attending.

High on the agenda during the ‘Haddington Road: Your Association. Your Review’ conference will be the reform they would like to see take place in an Garda Síochána.

The AGSI’s 31 branches will debate 23 motions, including:

  • The provision of a Police Authority to regulate the force
  • Issuing of Tazers to more gardaí
  • Having the confidential reporting charter reviewed and revised to make it more robust in the protection of genuine garda whistleblowers
  • Training for newly promoted Sergeants
  • Anew and updated job specification for Sergeants
  • A medical review over the prevalence of adverse health conditions among gardaí since the introduction of the Westmanstown Roster.

General Secretary John Redmond added they they have introduced a new feature to the conference this year in the form of a panel debate.

We pose the question – ‘what should a modern police force look like?’ We have external experts joining us so that the views are representative of modern Ireland and not just of our Association.

Panel members include Tom O’Malley, Senior Lecturer in Law, NUI Galway, Tony Geoghegan, CEO, Merchants Quay Ireland and broadcaster Marc Coleman.

John Redmond of AGSI will also sit on the panel, and Jonathan Healy of Newstalk will chair the debate.

As Minister Shatter will not be attending, acting Garda Commissioner Nóirín O’Sullivan will address delegates tomorrow afternoon, and will take their questions.

The conference will run until Wednesday 16 April at the Malton Hotel in Killarney.

Not sure about that, I think the pepper spray or something along those lines is better. Problem with tazers is if someone with pre-existing heart conditions gets hit then it could well kill them, and I’m sure guards don’t want deaths over public order offences on their consciences. In some ways guns would even be preferable because at least everyone knows the consequences if they’re put to use, and they won’t discriminate against people with cardiac issues. Tazers are grand 99% of the time, but they won’t be the times you hear about if things go wrong.

Silent makes a great point about tasers
And I have to agree about pepper spray, from experience it’s a better alternative.

The tazer should be standard issue for every Garda in the country,if they cannot even defend themselves its just plain stupid to expect them to uphold the laws of the country against armed criminals, and even self protection is every citizens right, including the Garda.

the Garda Síochána will succeed not by force of arms or numbers, but on their moral authority as servants of the people.

That sure is the aim Barry. However when the head of the guards fails to attend because of a religious event which by the way did not stop him last year despite Passover once again been on the same day of this meeting. You have to wonder how the moral fairs in the guards themselves.

They have done fine arresting people without the need for tazers for umpteen years. If it’s not broken don’t try to fix it.

    Not all cops are bad
But.. There are some that was bullied in school and feel the need to get revenge and there are some that are sociopaths
I just think it’s a bad idea issuing tazers to all the Garda. There should be some sort of evaluation before these weapons are issued. At the end of the day if you get on the sore end of a rouge Garda taser, who’s story do you think the judge will buy. If you live in a leafy suburb I wouldn’t be too worried it’s more those living in working class areas that could fall victim to unwarranted attacks by rouge cops. Sure who’s going to stop it from happening their colleagues.

@ Glen. One friend who is a Garda has broken both his hands in last few years arresting violent people. Tazer very likely would have prevented that.

Other friend was bitten by a drug fuelled junkie and had blood spit on him and was stressed out for ages until he got the all clear.

If they can’t protect themselves when on duty how harder must it be to protect others and read comments from people like you who don’t know them but insist they were bullies at school or are sociopaths.
