Tesco buys Cabra site from the State for €1.7 million

The 0.69 acre site on the Navan Road was no longer required by the Department of Social Protection.

TESCO IRELAND PAID €1.7 million to the State for a 0.69 acre site on the Navan Road that was surplus to the requirements of the Department of Social Protection.

According to junior minister Brian Hayes, the €1,702,800.83 will be halved with 50 per cent going to the Exchequer and 50 per cent to the 2015 Office of Public Works capital programme.

The arrangement was made with the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform which initially received the entire sum as an Extra Exchequer Receipt.

The site had been used by the Department of Social Protection as a local office until recently.

In February, Minister Joan Burton opened the Navan Road Intreo Centre, which amalgamated three separate offices into a “one-stop shop for jobseekers”.

Previously, the 8,450 customers of the Navan Road office had to visit three different premises to access these supports.

In Britain in the 90s, early 00s, Tesco had a policy of buying sites up, not necessarily to build on but to stop competitors building on, after a year a so of “consultations” they’d say the site was now unviable and sell it to developers (maybe even at a loss) to build flats etc, it was their way of keeping sites that could be a rival to one of their stores from every being a sainburys etc…

It’s illegal unfair business practices, just like fixing prices with a competitor would be in interests of the business… but illegal

It’s not illegal at all, are you trying to say that if something is bought and then found to be surplus to requirement it is against the law to sell it. It may not be fair but it’s done Aldi and Lidl have done the same and I’d be surprised if other businesses haven’t as well.

I hope there is an Aldi/Lidl in the area. All this competition might see Tesco prices normalise with those on the supermarket’s UK prices.
I prefer Aldi anyway -quality more consistent and staff are nicer therefore I’d imagine treated better than Tesco or Lidl.

To be honest I find the staff in all supermarkets pretty much the same. Some very helpful, some not so

Just my personal experience of the stores in central Dublin. It’s too striking to ignore. M&S is the politest and most consistent but you’d expect that. Next is Aldi by a mile – and I’m just guessing they’ve a better morale.

The store in Cabra is under performing, one of the worst turnovers in the company.

Really Malachy ,that surprises me , are you referring to the new navan road tesco on the site the article is about?? , it’s very clean , good parking facilities compared to phibsboro and the crappy Prussia st branch it replaced , I use it all the time , where did you get the information on its performance , can you back up that claim with facts or is that just hearsay.

Cheers Steve I haven’t used Prussia street since the new store opened , I was just really commenting that Malachy was saying it’s the worst performing store which I find hard to believe as it’s a far superior set up than Prussia st etc and seems bust enough when I use it…. I was curious if he was just making it up or based on groundless hearsay which I think he is, hasn’t responded either way ,;)

Dave, I should have elaborated, it would be one of the worst performing “extra” stores with a large floor space, I have been told during previous dealings in the retail sector. Sorry for the misunderstanding.
