Off-duty paramedics perform CPR as runner collapses at race finish line

The man has been taken to St James’s Hospital following today’s incident at the Phoenix Park and is believed to be making a good recovery.

A RUNNER WHO took part in a half-marathon event at Dublin’s Phoenix Park today is recovering in hospital, after he suffered a cardiac arrest at the finish line.

Two Dublin Fire Brigade paramedics — one retired, one off-duty — who were also taking part in the race came to the man’s aid, and administered CPR.

Members of the St. John’s Ambulance arrived and also provided assistance. The man’s pulse returned after he was treated with a defibrillator, and he was then taken to hospital.

He’s being treated at St James’s Hospital, and is said to be making a good recovery this evening.

Around 2,000 people took part in the charity race at the Dublin park today, organised to raise funds for the Laura Lynn Children’s Hospice.

The tax in a bricks and mortar bookies is on the amount wagered, to be fair if it was on the winnings you could end out paying a lot of money in tax! I’d imagine it would be the same for an online tax…

This tax will not help Irish or UK bookmakers to compete with online bookmakers. The reason that online bookmakers are more popular than the likes of Paddy Power and Ladbrokes is because the bigger online Asian bookmakers like Pinnacle or SBObet do not limit players when they win.

Some people that I know that used to place 50 euro football bets with Paddy Power have had their stakes limited to 50 cents per bet just because they had a few winning weeks and looked like they knew what they were doing.

Yet if these same bookmakers see a problem gambler losing hundreds or thousands every day of the week then they are welcomed with open arms.

Paddy Power and their ilk will not gain the custom of players who play with the big Asian bookmakers due to this tax because Paddy Power does not want to take bets from this type of player anyway (hence the limits on their accounts).

So it looks like another money grab again by this greedy government.

Look at the cards there is a 3 club’s 5 Spades 8 clubs and a Queen Clubs.

    Reduce the card values 3+5+8+1+0 = 17

    “Ultimate” in Ordinal = 101 = 11 in common = 606 = 66 when you drop the Zeros.

    “Poker” = 65 = 6+5 = 11___ “Pot” in Jewish = 210 = 21 (7+7+7)__ $ 2.88 = 2+8+8 =18 (6+6+6)

The Letter “U” is the 21st Letter of the alphabet _21 (7+7+7)

Or the one which claims expenses for renting properties in Northern Ireland, but then doesn’t pay the rent?

Enda sits back in the chair, smiling. Relax lads, there is no problem that can’t be fixed by more tax. Especially the lads who have nothing. You can always get more out of them.

    Thanks Enda, you’re right.

The rise in Bitcoin sports books mean that online gambling is here to stay whether the government like it or not. Online bookmakers like Nitrogen Sports or Anonibet allow players to deposit and withdraw funds in bitcoin at really low cost.

In fact some of the books like Nitrogen do not even require players to register an account and so the whole process is completely anonymous. I would like to see how Enda and Co will be able to tax that.

And before anyone points out the volatility of bitcoin etc etc….. It is only used to transfer funds which can immediately be converted to any currency instantly.

Isn’t there a tax on gambling in physical betting shops as it is? I think the bookies have just absorbed/pay it themselves as a ‘gesture of goodwill’ to their punters or something… They’ll probably do the same with this online tax if it’s only 1% so I wouldn’t be getting too worked up about it! The likes of Powers, Boyles and Ladbrokes etc. won’t suffer too much with a 1% tax!

Maybe put some of the proposed tax into funding for treatment centres and support for people that would probably contribute most to this new tax, and may need the help at some point.

“”Betting duty” at 6.75% was applied to sports bets until 2001 when it was replaced by a 15% tax on gross profits.[15]

From 1 December 2014, the Gambling (Licensing & Advertising) Bill[16] will change the taxation of remote gambling from a ‘place of supply’ basis to a ‘point of consumption’ basis.[17]

The betting industry alone is reported to contribute £6 billion as of January 2010, 0.5% of GDP. Furthermore it employs over 100,000 people and generates £700 Million in tax revenue.[18]”
