Pics: President Higgins and Taoiseach among thousands who gather to remember Easter Rising

A wreath was laid outside the steps of the GPO with the Proclamation of the Republic also read out.

AN ESTIMATED 5,000 people turned out for the military commemoration of the 1916 Easter Rising in Dublin today.

A wreath was laid outside the steps of the GPO by President Michael D Higgins with the Proclamation of the Republic read out by Captain Sean Coffey of the Irish Defence Forces.

Commandant Jayne Lawlor also spoke to the assembled crowd with Taoiseach Enda Kenny and Minister for Defence Alan Shatter also in attendance.

The official State commemoration was reintroduced in 2006 by the Fianna Fáil-led government, and is now held every year.

Sinn Féin also held a separate Easter Rising commemoration in which party leader Gerry Adams accused the Government of having “an amnesia about the revolutionary period”.

The Louth TD’s party were launching plans for a ’1916 Revolutionary Quarter’ which they say would protect the historic buildings in the area.

It’s sad that uet again the commemoration was not broadcast live on rte 1 or 2. Our national broadcast service and no coverage on our primary stations.
It appears that a re run of winning streak was more important than to commemorate the event that led to the foundation of our State.

Why would they do that ? That would be saying we have a country at all. When we all know those turn coats standing there are selling it down the swannie with every waking day they have in government.

I agree that the Republic as envisaged hasn’t been achieved but is it not important to televise the commemoration. I still believe thst the event should be highlighted in a more significant way.

    Yeats got it right,
“We know their dream, enough to know that they dreamed and are dead.
And was it excess of love that bewildered them till they died.
I write it out in a verse, McDonagh and McBride and Connolly and Pearse, now and in times to be, wherever green is worn, are changed, changed utterly, a terrible beauty is born.”.
    Extract from Easter 1916.
Official Ireland wants to pretend it didn’t happen, or if it did it was an aberration that they want to distance themselves from.
There are those who talk of celebration, I think commemoration is a better description.
You don’t see the French trying to downplay Bastille Day, you don’t see the Americans trying to downplay the Fourth of July.
Yet everything in official Ireland, from Enda Kenny as Taoiseach ridiculing the rising, to Gilmores vision of an atheist Ireland, to the Department of Education removing Yeats from the syllabus in the run up to the centenary speaks volumes about its attitude.
If they get their way it could be an occasion with all the substance of blancmange.
I for one would prefer to see it acknowledged properly.

I know people who grew up here and consider themselves what ever nationality their parents are. I dont think sorry any person who hasnt got grass roots to a country blood sweat and tears should be able to be a politician. He is also as far as i can see openly aggressive to Catholic religion. The government really need to give a grant/tax credit to businesses on O’Connell street and elsewhere in the city centre to improve the look of the shops.
It’s a disgrace that many of the buildings haven’t been painted in ages. Up in Belfast for the day and in and around the city centre the buildings are beautifully restored/painted.

I know some people are gonna disagree with what I’m gonna say and I totally understand and respect that if you do disagree with me. This is sort of unrelated to the 1916 Rising but more got to do with commemorating Irish Independence. I really feel the commemorations of the independence of Ireland is abit depressing and dull, and I know that it’s to be respectful to those who died and I think we should keep the respectfulness of the commemorations and remember those who have died but I also think we should celebrate our little state and not just with St. Patrick’s Day with all the alcohol. Ireland has come along way since we became independent, we’ve had so many sad moments in our history and we never seem to focus on the good bits and our achievements. I think we should have some sort of celebration of the history, culture, music, people (etc) of Ireland and have it as a happy and joyous occasion alongside a respectful commemoration of the dead who fought for our independence.

Dvdmgi, I think I can see what you’re getting at. However, even a hundred years later, I feel that celebration of this “rising ” are premature. Maybe we should wait for as long as it takes to establish a Republic, then we could freely and joyously celebrate?
