Stardust families are to meet gardaí tomorrow as their fight for a fresh inquiry continues

A garda investigation was recently launched into both 1981 tribunal and subsequent review.

FAMILIES OF THOSE who died in the Stardust fire are to meet with investigators in Garda Headquarters tomorrow as they seek to press the Government for a fresh inquiry.

A garda investigation was recently launched into both 1981 Keane Tribunal into the Stardust fire and the 2009 Coffey Tribunal which reviewed the evidence.

The families hope these developments along with tomorrow’s meeting will help them convince the Government to hold another inquiry.

Present at tomorrow’s meeting will be spokesperson for the Victims’ Committee Antoinette Keegan, researcher Gerladine Foy as well as fire expert Robin Knox who has also been working with the committee.

They will show gardaí research which they say shows how fire based evidence was fraudulent and hope that gardaí will acknowledge this in the form of a letter to be presented to Government.

There has been disagreement with the Department of Justice over whether the information they point to constitutes new evidence and Justice Minister Alan Shatter has ruled out any possibility that new inquiry.

Speaking this evening to TheJournal.ie, Keegan says that that the committee is also in desperate need of funds.

“The Government have even refused to pay expenses on the Coffey review. We’re looking to raise funds and the families are looking to raise funds. The experts we’ve hired to look into the case has left us with debts. We would appeal for people to donate even a euro.”

The committee say that there was an agreement that the fees would be discharged after the Coffey review and that their costs run to in excess of €192,000.

If you wish to donate to the committee, details on how to do so are available here

I wish they would start a new enquiry. Give these people some peace of mind if that is at all possible.

Hey, it’s unbelievable what obstacles are put in the way of real justice in this country.
I hope you all get this inquiry and that it’s kept real with no ridiculous limitations placed on it.
Our thoughts remain with you all.

This tragedy is disgusting episode in Irish history. The owners should have been charged with manslaughter. They were well connected and much more important than the innocent kids who died. Shamefully the coverup will continue for years to come.
