'Maybe they are common in the Shelbourne...but not Leitrim': Hotelier cancels land auction

The owner of the Bush Hotel cancelled a land auction following a protest by the newly-formed Land League.

RealityIreland / YouTube

THE NEWLY-FORMED Land League prevented the sale of land which is subject to an ongoing legal dispute in Leitrim yesterday.

Along with various anti-eviction groups, the group met at the Bush Hotel in Carrick-on-Shannon to protest against the sale of a local family’s land.

On hearing of the situation at his property, owner Joe Dolan cancelled the auction.

“I have a lot of family-owned property and how they progress into the future,” he said on his decision to stop the sale.

“I was very uncomfortable about the whole issue – not just because of who it was and what it was…but because of the way it was parachuted upon our business here.

“These events may be common in the Shelbourne Hotel and likeminded but they are not common in Leitrim. We are very much part of our community. Our community are very good to us…It’s a small, rural community.

We look out for each other. We share each other’s pain, we share each other’s happiness. We all work together for a common goal.

He added that he was “glad this event did not happen”.

“I was disappointed it was. I was embarrassed it ended up in this hotel. I apologise to the community…we very much compromised. I hope that’s the end of it.”

He noted that the behaviour of the protesters was “impeccable”.

The New Land League was established recently with an aim to stop evictions and auctions of disputed land or property taking place across the country.

Its members say they will engage in peaceful demonstrations at sites where attempted evictions are planned.

According to reports last weekend, there is a database of supporters being drawn up so that text alerts can been sent out.

Organiser Jerry Beades told the Sunday Independent that their presence is often enough to stop the evictions or the sales – as is evident from yesterday’s events.

Our town and community is one big family and that was shown yesterday! Well done to all involved yesterday in stopping the auction! We are lucky to have a gentleman like Joe Dolan in our parish.

Hotels don’t book out conference centres without asking what it’s for. This guy is simply caving in to local pressure. Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad he did but lets not portray him as some sort of hero

He probably knew it was for an auction – yes.. But not the type of auction that was selling out our own community. And when he found out it was he cancelled it. And your saying not to portray him as some sort of hero..he’s a community man he’s not a man who only cares about money, and thankfully it was being held in his hotel because he was able to stop it..do you think the owner of any other hotel would care enough to do that?!

I suppose it’s not up to him to decide if it is legitimate or not. He just doesn’t want to see his personal friends and neighbours dealt with as if they are a number on a balance sheet, at least not under his own roof. He’s not trying to convince anyone that he’s a hero. He’s just supporting the people who have supported him and his family especially over the past couple of years.

Some of the prominent figures of this ‘new land league’ movement:
Tom Darcy – originally famous for being the head of a taxi drivers union that worked vehemently to oppose deregulation, he then became a property developer; making a lot of money and building a mansion for himself in Howth. When the Celtic Tiger began to slow in he took out €18 million loan with his house as collateral. His business failed regardless, but he has yet to pay the banks a cent. I believe he has had three moves to repossess his house yet each have failed on a technicality. The banks have restarted the process for a fourth time and by September he probably will have lost his house. He is desperate and he understands unless there is a massive debt forgiveness program brought in before September, he is screwed.
Jeremiah Beades was the Secretary of Fianna Fail, Bertie Aherne’s bagman and the man in charge of invites to the Galway tent. He owes €3.5 million and said several months ago in court that he had had €2 million of his embezzled with a bank manager. As he had no evidence of such, it didn’t wash with the court, and he now is desperate too.
These guys need some debt foregiveness and they need it quick..

Frankly I don’t give a fcuk if you listed out Adolf Hitler,Pol Pot, Jack the Ripper and Bin Laden etc.

You’ll take a helping hand from anyone when your government deserts you
and criminalizes you as it harbors and rewards the real culprits with money stole from your pockets.

How much time and money did this family put into this land over the years/decades?
What purpose does it really serve for a criminal bank to fire-sell this land from under these people?

7 fcuking long years and the government has done nothing but protect, reward, and support the culprits.

Well I do give a fcuk.. These people are lying, they have only their own interests at heart, and in fact both could be said to be the culprits no? Both property developers who defaulted no? Surely theirs is the blame for the mess?
Any group led by men like that isn’t one I could support or condone. I don’t know anything about this farm or the family, maybe they were just an ordinary people that deserve a hand. You can however be certain that the leaders of this land league are in it only for selfish reasons, even though their blind followers make them out as Michael Davitt come again..

You seem to speak from the “all right Jack” fence Killjoy.
When you are vilified and criminalized for 5-6-7 years by corrupt/criminal banks who have the full support of your government
as the real villains live it up at your expense,
you are not to fussy about who is the owner of the helping hand who can keep you in your home for another few days.

This is a perfect example of what happens when your government are spineless turncoats.

I don’t think the Magdelanes would have discriminate between help of an armed robber or the help of a Judge if it meant freedom for them.
At the time you’d have had more of a chance of an armed robber helping you to break out of a Magdelane laundry.
But people like you don’t see that Mr Killjoy.
You just keep repeating failed protocol until someone gets hurt, and then there’s a big fuss made.

The government has stepped behind corrupt/criminal banks with our money.
They have signed off on an already failed “all new” insolvency that was practically written by the the same corrupt/criminal banks.
This has played out over the last 7 years.
It’s self preservation at this stage.
Whatever will buy you those extra few vital days, and keeps you alive with hope is very welcome.

I’ve no problem with peaceful protests against evictions, I’ve no problems with the hotelier cancelling the auction – these are matters of personal principle. If I had the misfortune of being in the same position, I’d fight for my home/farm by any peaceful means.

My issue is with illegality and hucksters taking advantage of desperate and naive people. Using freeman tactics, trusts, threatening people who are carrying out their jobs etc.

If the repossession was legal, the property will be sold eventually, as long as people respect the decision of the courts then, in the meantime, what harm in trying – they may get the lender to reconsider. If so, fair dues, if not, pick up the pieces and try again.

Ever tried, ever failed, no matter. Try again. Try harder. Fail better.

Of course people should provide for themselves – that is the correct thing to do.

First, you pay your bills, food etc. then you pay your mortgage.

If you can’t pay your mortgage, you approach the lender and seek an alternative arrangement, if you can’t do this yourself, engage a third party to help.

If you still can’t afford an alternative arrangement then you will lose your home and have to live somewhere else. You could surrender it, sell it or fight the lender in court but either way, if you can’t pay for it, you can’t keep it.

I don’t see what’s so difficult to follow. Your problem is that you seem to be arguing that nobody should pay and everyone should keep the properties but you can’t come up with any suggestion as to how this should be done.

I think that you invested in buy to let properties which started going under when your small business went to the wall. Now you are left with nothing but resentment and are spending your days living off the rent and avoiding your lenders.

I don’t envy you and realise that it’s a horrendous situation but you shouldn’t let it consume you – life is bigger than that.

At least these guys are doing something about it. It is wrong in every conceivable way how the banks are treating the ordinary people of this country. Fair enough you will get the few scammers who will try get their mortgage reduced even though they don’t need it but the vast majority of people who are being evicted are ordinary hard working people who do not deserve to be evicted. Remember we as tax payers gave those w*nker bankers money already to sort this mess out and they didn’t pass it on to the ordinary man who is under severe pressure. Look at Richie Boucher on his near €1 million salary and he has the audacity to tell his AGM that the bank doesn’t do debt forgiveness.

    Spot on John.
The real damage has been done by our corrupt/criminal banks and government already.

For our bust criminal banks (with government support) to go around grabbing a few bits of land or a home from their victims is only a bit of a lame diversion to try and throw the blame onto the victims, as the real culprits maintain their lavish lifestyles at our expense.
    How pathetic.
Even from a practical perspective, this type of heavy handed activity is a pointless exercise.
The only people who gain from it are the big fat greedy accountancy/legal/estate agency firms who orchestrated the bubble/bust in the first place.

I welcome it. I hope it encourages others to follow suit. I also admire those that have made an impact on the allsops auctions, those that have turned up in numbers to stop evictions, those that stop water meters being installed, those that protest at the inherited state of affairs everyday people find themselves in.

I see all people that make a justifiable stand, however minor or major, to be part of a collective – not individual components – but a collective. That collective IMO should be the majority, but it isn’t.

What were the circumstances behind the auction of the land??
    Why was it being sold??
Bit off more than they could chew?? Don’t get me wrong, fair play he stopped the auction but if it went ahead he would lose his custom and would probably see his own portfolio being sold in some other hotel auction.

    Too right.
If your in the service industry, generally the custom of human beings does help.

The custom from a weasel, 2 bit, half ar$ed, snake oil auctioneer, wouldn’t make you up.

Great stuff! More of this please. I’m beginning to hear more of this sort of thing happening in communities. I’m glad. I hope this leads to greater things. I hope the land league links up with other likeminded groups like ballyhea and aaa if they’re such way inclined. The more organized people are the more people will be a force to be reckoned with and we can work towards reasserting our sovereignty and republic.

When I look at the leading lights associated with this so called Land League I shudder at the sheer audacity of the idea that the Banks have been given monies by the State and therefor loans on property don’t have to be repaid and homes cannot be repossessed.
These auctions are being conducted on the instructions of the Courts and mob rule cannot be allowed to push the Law to one side in the selfish interest of those who believe that legitimate debts are somehow to be ignored.
The banks were given State funding to permit a breathing space for long term agreements to be put in place where mortgage holders had gotten themselves into financial difficulty. However if we are now saying that all of those with unpaid loans can simply walk away from them and hold on to their property then we are talking about complete societal collapse as the Banks would refuse to lend ever again and would need to be recapitalized to save them from immediate collapse.
    Let’s all get a grip!

Funny you should say that Richard.
But did the banks not walk away from their loans and responsibilities?
    Or did I dream that?

The hundred billion Euro damage is done
The government have done sweet f all exept fill their pockets and the pockets of the culprits
Who really gives one flying fcuk who keeps what at this stage?
The horse (and his fleas) have well and truly bolted.

    Well said Kevin.
Maybe Kenny and Hogan waiting for another Priory Hall tragedy before they’ll get of their Ar$es?

    Joe
the system doesn’t work as it exists in Ireland – thats why we all have to pay to keep the privately owned banks in business. What is the penalty for those who were part of the brigade who gave out all this money – two more walked away again today! its obscene. The financial system is based on exploring opportunity and managing risk. Only the banks whether Irish or German seem to be operating risk free while we pay? I would imagine there are very few people in Ireland who wish to expose themselves to being forcibly removed from their own home my concerns are much more aligned with their’s than the banks. All the best Joe.

Is this the same Jerry Beades who turned up in court to “support” an insolvent landlord who changed the locks on and illegally evicted their fully paid up tenant?
    http://www.thepropertypin.com/viewtopic.php?p=727605#p727605

Don’t buy the guff about family homes. The likes of Beades (former property developer) have a different agenda, which is ensuring that insolvent landlords get to keep the properties they can’t afford at the expense of everybody else, i.e. tenants bail out their own landlords. The spin about “family homes” is just a smokescreen for their real agenda.

Id love to know how these people expect the financial system of this country to work if there is no penalty for refusing to pay your mortgage. If you want to help people in distress this is not how to do it.
