Can't get a good night's sleep? Here's how technology is ruining bedtime

OUR ADDICTION TO technology can be affecting us in ways we might not have previously realised.

Or, if this has happened to you, maybe you are aware of the problem.

Many people watch TV as they fall asleep or text while they lie in bed at night, but these habits could prevent you from getting a good night’s sleep.

And most people already feel sleep-deprived. In a National Sleep Foundation study in the US, 63 per cent of those surveyed said they didn’t get enough sleep.

    Though I know how tech affects sleep.
    I don’t think tech is responsible for the 63% that feel sleep deprived.

    I’d say those 63% have jobs, are studying or are a parent.

    I used to sleep with my phone on silent on the bed beside me, always had trouble getting to sleep. Then I started actually turning the phone off. It seems that action has improved my ability to get to sleep, and get to sleep earlier. I also make sure no electronics in my room have power running through them and that my room is as dark as possible.

    Personally, we have a 40 inch flatscreen and the end of the bed, more often than not we settle down in the bedroom in the evening with 2 laptops, 2 iphones, flatscreen too, and I’m at the point where I can’t sleep unless I have a history audiobook playing through my headphones.

    Normally, it has to be about ancient Rome. If I don’t have it, I can’t get to sleep.

    It’s ridiculous and it’s getting worse.

    I know the blue light from electronic devices can disrupt melatonin and the circadian rhythm, there is free software f.lux which reduces the blue light your computer emits in real time so it takes on a more orange hue as the evening goes on. I find it great.

    I suffer with insomnia it doesn’t matter what time I turn off the phone or iPod I still don’t get to sleep.

    My laptop goes off without exception at 9pm now.

    If I’m in bed alone the best way I get to sleep is to read ebooks on my tablet, I recommend the Kobo Arc (you can get them in Currys quite cheap just don’t let them stuff you with all the security software and pointless ‘updates’ you don’t need..pay sticker price ignore the stroppy salesman) , you can set the books (which are backlit white in daytime) to a ‘night’ mode, the background turns black and the letters white, I let that be the only thing on, then eye lids are getting heavy within the hour.
    I way prefer them to old style books, which you need a lamp on for so you can’t really relax, and it’s akward to hold a thick hardback up and read on your side, with a tablet it’s easy.

    It doesn’t load, now I won’t be able to sleep because I’ll be anxious I might be doing some thing that might prevent me from sleeping properly.

    I can’t sleep without listening to podcasts. I put them on sleep timer. They finish and I wake up again.
