Dramatic cloud funnel spotted in Cork amid severe thunderstorm

However, it didn’t touch down and there are no reports of any damage.

A RARE CLOUD funnel formation was spotted in Cork on Sunday evening, causing residents to flee the county in fear for their lives.

Well, not really – there are no reports of any damage, it does not appear to have touched down, and seems to have dispersed within half an hour.

It was spotted just after 5pm in the Millstreet area of Cork, and captured on camera by 12-year-old Siobhán Cronin.

Eyewitnesses say it occurred during a severe but short-lived thunderstorm in the area.

Funnels in Ireland are quite rare, although there have been dozens of reports of incidents where the cloud formation has touched down on land, becoming a tornado and causing damage.

Thankfully this particular formation passed without incident.

If it had touched ground citizens would have fled across the border into neighbouring Republic of Ireland

Something happened that could have led to something else happening that could have been serious. Thankfully, nothing else happened. Move along, nothing to see here.

Hahaha when you have to draw a red circle to highlight the “dramatic” bit in a picture , it’s usually not that dramatic ;)

I’m surprised this is only hitting the news now. There was pandemonium on patrick street on Sunday. At least 2 women went into brown Thomas and did not emerge for over 35 minutes. Mid afternoon a gentleman walked out of Eason, up towards the grand parade and turned into porters half way up the main thoroughfare. Frightened onlookers could only speculate as to what he could find in porters that was not already available in Eason. A truly harrowing day for the good people of cork.

Dr John Tyrell [ UCC ?] was collecting details of incidents such as this even if the funnels did not touch down as he researched the occurrence of ‘twisters’ in Ireland. There was a conference in Oxford 2 weeks back where this item would have been of great interest.

The Boyne Valley is a better place to go hunting for funnels and twisters especially the stretch from Boardsmill to Trim. Several buildings have been damaged over the years, saw a beauty there meself about 20 years ago which raced across bare hot ground only to collapse when it hit a cold wet ditch.
