Why is the Mexican flag flying over the Mansion House?*

*No, we haven’t been invaded.

LORD MAYOR OISÍN Quinn is today hosting the first Mexico-Dublin Business Conference in the Mansion House.

What’s it all about, we hear you cry?

Well, the Lord Mayor and the Government think that Irish trade with Mexico could double in size to around €2 billion over the next five years.

Mexico is the second largest economy in Latin America, and following on the heels of President Higgins visit there earlier this year, the Mexican Secretary for Economy is leading a high level delegation of Mexican business leaders to Dublin.

There’s going to be 90 business leaders from Mexico in attendance, and they’ll be hob-nobbing with 70 of their Irish counterparts.

Ireland exported €690 million worth of goods to Mexico in 2013, almost three times the level exports were at in 2000.

The Government is putting on a strong show for our visitors, with Eamonn Gilmore, Richard Bruton and Joe Costello all expected to turn up over the course of the two day event.

They’ll be pitching Ireland as a gateway to Europe for Mexican companies.

Mexican Ambassador to Ireland Carlos García de Alba said:

Mexico is now the worl’d 14th largest economy, with manufacturing exports playing a vital role. I have no doubt that this conference will play a very significant role in developing economic relations between our two countries.

Here’s how much we’re making from overseas trade>

The government liked* Mexico so much they’re sending someone there again>

Zorro is a character created in 1919 by New York–based pulp writer Johnston McCulley. The character has been featured in numerous books, films, television series, and other media

But apparently the character was based on William Lamport, an Irish Catholic adventurer.

I’m not from Wexford, just heard about it on the radio and it sounded a bit unusual.

Depends on what part of Mexico you’re talking about. True, the border area is pretty bad, but once you get way from there and travel around it’s no worse than most other places. It is certainly a beautiful country and the people are extremely hospitable and friendly.

I worked in the Lighthouse service in the 1980′s

The Commissioners had the Irish Lights flag (Which contained bits of the Union Jack) raised above the tricolour. They got a phone call threatening to blow the ship out of the water if they didn’t rectify the problem.

Flying of the national flag instruction from the department of the Taoisech states that no flag should fly higher than the national flag. Buts its not law. Just advice on flying of national flag
But given the disrepect shown to the national flag in everyday life why should the mansion house be any different
