File photo of herbal cannabis and cannabis resin seized by gardaí PA Archive/Press Association Images

Two released and three still in custody over €5.1m drugs seizure

Some of the drugs were seized when a van and car were searched in the IKEA car park on the Ballymun Road.

THREE PEOPLE REMAIN in custody over a drugs bust that took place last Friday.

Gardaí said this morning that three men remain in custody in relation to the €5.1 million cannabis seizure.

Two are detained at Finglas Garda Station and one at Ballymun Garda Station.

Two people, a man and a woman, have been released without charge and a file will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The drugs were discovered during two related operations in the capital.

The first discovery was made when a van and car were searched while in the IKEA car park on the Ballymun Road.

Inside, gardaí found 90kg of resin and arrested three men.

In a follow-up search at a unit in a North Dublin business park, 240kg of cannabis was discovered by gardaí. A woman was arrested in the Ballymun area following this discovery.

True, it’s just a shame that they’re left to fight a losing battle, a battle that cannot be won with our current drug policies, it’s absolutely insane to continue with the same failed policies and expect to get different results.

Don’t be stupid – they sell them to you in smaller pieces, then you have to take them to your own house and stick them back together …

It’s time for a new drug policy. Irelands always the last to catch on to policy trends in other countries lets be ahead of the curve for once.
This is like same sex civil rights…even the most conservative people know one day some form of legalization is going to happen.

Now lets take X, Heroin, marijuana and see how much better a legal model would be. The circular logic of the current policy is ”but it funds criminality”…yes…because it’s illegal, but if it was legal it would not be funding Tommo and Jayo from Darndale it would be funding Mr Lyman from the upstanding pharma company who these same cops would practically pull out a red carpet for.

So lets say we treat each drug with a diff policy, we allow persons to grow and consume Marijuana for personal use. Focus our resources on education about effects, and everything’s fine. Marijuana does not kill. Nobody needs to buy it off anyone, (buying the seeds is legal) so Tommo and Jayo have less money for criminality.
So x and heroin lets say they are produced by a special independent company on tender license that works for the state, has 80% of it’s profits go right back into drug treatment (making the drug problem self financing), and is banned from advertising or marketing in any way. Drug packs come with dosage instructions, warnings etc. So less overdoses, and way more resources for addiction treatment. Win Win.
All the big dealers get a huge drop in revenue and thus can buy less guns etc
We use part of the money to put safe injection sites and needle exchanges etc so we catch anyone falliong thru the cracks.

So everyone over 18 can purchase these drugs, so that means the only niche dealers have left is those under 18 (or 21 or whatever we set it at) so we focus ALL state resources on that sale, coming down HARD on it, life meaning life for first offense, anyone helping them gets 90 days solitary and 10 years community service.

That would get us far better results than running after people smoking spliffs in cars at 3am.

Seems appropriate seeing as though it was 90-odd kilos of cannabis resin they were caught with initially!
