Enda Kenny on property: I promise you there is no going back to the past

An Taoiseach plans a tripling of housing output by 2020 but says its about addressing supply problems.

TAOISEACH ENDA KENNY has promised that the launch of the Government’s new construction strategy will not lead to another property bubble.

Speaking at the launch of the Construction 2020 plan, Kenny pledged that while a “boom-bust” property market will not return, a sustainable construction sector is vital for the economy.

The plan will see a portion of mortgages to first-time buyers guaranteed by the State and also includes some capital expenditure programmes planned as part of the sale of state assets.

There has been a critical reaction to the Government’s announcement from some quarters with Fianna Fáil describing it as a “pre-election gimmick”.

Others like Lucinda Creighton TD said the idea of supporting first-time buyers was reminiscent of the kind of policies that led to Ireland’s financial collapse.

“Nobody wants to go back to the bad old days of the construction and property boom. That won’t benefit the country, young families or the sector itself,” An Taoiseach countered this afternoon.

The spectacular crash in the sector has caused widespread hardship and ruin for many. The creation of a boom bust property market has left hundreds of thousands of families in negative equity, the consequences of which will be with us for many years to come. I promise you there is no going back to that past.

An Taoiseach’s speech was delivered at the National Sports Campus in Dublin today and pledged that there would be a “tripling housing of output by 2020, adding 60,000 jobs to the construction sector over the same period”.

He argued that there is a “severe shortage in (housing) supply driving up prices in some areas which is causing great difficulties for many young people”.

Kenny pointed to Construction Industry Register which will be compulsory from next year and new building regulations as proof that that poor construction practices hat pertained in the past will not “be repeated”.

And the property tax promise was made around the same time that contraception was illegal in Ireland. If you go back far enough you could find anomalies in every party manifesto. How about this one? SF have suddenly become the socialist party in the south while they implement the opposite measures in the north? Making promises that have no intention of keeping possibly? Surely not!!

Nice bit of backtracking you blueshirt jolly boys but of course your selective amnesia prevents you from acknowledging the numerous promises FG made which transpired to be nothing but populist bullshit from a party desperate to get into power, maybe you can enlighten us on why FG promised a renegotiation of the bailout, no more money into zombie banks and retention of hospital services in whatever county they were slobbering their lies?

Your party leader proved that he is incapable of delivering what he promised, he suggested he and FG would be the knights riding into battle wearing the green shirt, waging war on the economic terrorism the EU and FG subjected us to and what did we get?….we got a man who thinks he’s a king, pontificating to his peons over the airwaves from speeches composed by some anonymous hack and a lasting image of him is getting his hair ruffled when he tried to mix it with the big boys in Europe, he promised much, delivered nothing and it’s why FG will always be a one term party, they’re just about useless at everything.

Relax Whynot….I’m no fan of Kenny (I happen to think he’s an obnoxious pr**k) and I’m certainly not a FG supporter. I am however a realist and I wonder what else an alternative government could have done. I think the correct route was taken and cuts and tax hikes were unavoidable. They are obviously not popular choices but in my humble opinion I think they were necessary to come some way towards correcting our deficits. I expect to be personally abused for my opinion, which is the norm here, but id prefer to live in the real world than a world where Joe Higgins and SF are the answer to all our woes

Dermot could it possibly have been because they believed they would be able to deliver those things and then found out they couldn’t?

There was no need for FG to lie. They were always going to win the last election as the largest party. So why would they?

And getting upset about politicians lying is extremely childish. Politicians have lied since the concept was thought of.

How would you have fixed our problems?

All things considered they’ve not done too badly. I still won’t be voting for either Government party. I would be very worried about Reilly’s policy on health insurance and I couldn’t in good conscience, as a teacher, vote for a party that Quinn is a member of.

But taken as a whole FG/LAB have not done too badly and I think most sane people who don’t advocate default/leaving the Euro/massive tax increases, would agree.

They were given a mandate to alleviate the unfair debt the EU gave us and they blew it because they’re not interested in this country, they are known EU federalists so all they done was reinforce us the whipping boys of Europe and were too scared to upset Frau Merkel and the German banks.

Let’s say that I (as a Fianna Fáil member) drive my car at 150kph down a road with a poor surface, and end up skidding off the road and crashing into a wall. I’ve destroyed my car and have ended up in the intensive care unit of the hospital. My brother buys a shiny new family car. When I get out of hospital, he takes me for a drive. We end up going down the same road where I had my car crash. He puts his foot hard on the accelerator. Realising what’s about to happen I scream “slow down! This is exactly how I destroyed my car and ended up crippled from the waist down”.

How does he respond? A rational, normal person would slow down and thank me for warning them of their impending disaster. If my brother was a Fine Gael or Labour party member, it’s likely that instead he would scream “SHUT UP YA BLEEDIN’ CRIPPLE. YOU RUINED YER CAR! YOU CAN’T TALK” and press their foot down harder on the accelerator.

And so we’re doomed to commit past mistakes, over and over again.

Whoever you choose to vote for in the next election, ask them whether or not they intend to repeat past mistakes. If they respond with “no”, ask them to detail what those mistakes are…

Just a few weeks ago I spotted someone on DAFT.ie advertsing a bed under someone’s stairs for €230 a month. Dublin needs new rental accomodation and social housing. Students can no longer afford to live in Dublin, where we have 3 universities and countless ITs and FETAC colleges. This government’s housing plan is backward looking, not forward looking. People are becoming more mobile. In the world of tomorrow, we aren’t going to settle down in one place until they are in their late 30s or early 40s. The main obstacle to this is rent prices which have gone through the roof. Mortgages aren’t the problem and never were.

No Fianna Fail can’t say anything because they are a party totally without ideology wedded to power and nothing else.

I don’t really have an issue with the bank guarantee we were fecked anyway by then. I have an issue with taking the easy way out on 90% of decisions for 80 years. Ignoring the Bacon report was a utter disgrace. If FF actually had learnt something from the crash I wouldn’t have an issue but they haven’t.

It’s still utter populism and local politics to the core.

The bank guarantee was the greatest error in the history of the state. Deposits were already guaranteed up to €100k.
The current administration is no better than the previous. Soaked taxpayers for political, regulatory and administrative incompetence (See Nolan judgement).

He won’t allow another property bubble? Too late, it has gone crazy in Dublin much to the delight of banks, NAMA and their puppet government. Encouraging extra money for first time buyers will only push prices up further when there is a dire lack of supply. The situation is already bad and they have the neck to try spin it into a positive story, roll on May 23.

My only hope is that in their remaining time in government that they don’t ruin it any more than they have already. It’s actually amazing. Every country runs through boom-bust cycles. It’s amazing however that the current government, despite currently being in a recession AND constantly blaming FF (correctly of course) for causing the recession, that they would bring in a policy like this which would suggest they have forgotten the recent price crash. What’s hilarious is the advertisement of 60,000 new jobs. What about the 300,000 plus jobs created by the last fake boom. That didn’t work out too well now did it?
Whoever thinks that those individuals who are deemed high risk by banks for mortgages should actually be given a foot up by the tax payer needs their head examined. God forbid of course in Ireland, where we are obsessed with owning property, that those who can’t afford to buy are actually forced to rent. Grrrrr

“pledged that there would be a “tripling housing of output by 2020″ – The problem here is that they are putting the cart before the horse. By introducing the mortgage scheme first to give the CIF boys security that the mortgages are available to buy the properties they will cause an increase in the amount of people with mortgage approval BEFORE the housing is there to accomodate all the buyers. So, twice as many people with mortgage approval pottering around looking at houses that can’t even accomodate the demand as it stands, all bidding against each other driving prices up in the short term. Then when these new units start to come on line the property prices will be significantly higher than they are now. Unless we go back to the good old days where you buy off plans wihtout any idea of what your actually getting, Pyrite and Priory Hall anyone? But sure we’ve learned from our past mistakes…haven’t we?
