KBC Bank halves loan impairments to €48 million

The bank is planning a blitz targeting new customers throughout the year.

KBC BANK IRELAND has reduced the scale of its impaired loans by half for the first quarter of the year.

The level of provision for bad debt has dropped from €99 million during the first quarter of 2013 to €47.9 million for the same period this year.

Losses after tax and impairment charges came down to €17.1 million, compared to a loss of €46.4 million last year.

The bank is pressing on with new customer acquisition, adding over 9,000 customer accounts and €0.2 billion in retail deposits during Q1.

Another five branches are planned for Dublin, and it said that it will continue aggressively pursuing new customers. KBC ran a ‘change your bank day’ earlier this year, and launched new a new credit card and various personal banking services.

The bank employs over 800 people in Ireland with banking hubs in Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Galway.

Chief executive Wm Verbraeken said that the losses and impairments were “in line with our expectations” and that the bank expects to return to profitability in 2016.

Peter they’re not panicking. Just doing their job. And our health system unlike those very poor nations in Africa does have the human and physical resources to do the job in this case. We have very good professionals and if, and this is must unlikely, there were concerns about an outbreak we have the capacity to move resources speedily and effectively. If anyone thinks not them just look how the State has dealt with foot and mouth disease in cattle. If we can so that for animals I can assure you what we can do for humans will make that response look shabby. When push comes to shove bureaucratic obstacles can disappear.

Kev, there are different strains of this. This particular one has a mortality rate of 50-60%, not 90%. Still scary in itself until you consider that it is not as contagious as colds or the flu. Infact it’s the flu you need to really worry about. That kills more people per year than ebola ever did.

    @Surein
If you read my comment properly, you would have seen I said “partially airborne”.

This means not large distances, it also means in moisture droplets of a certain size. The point is it can be transmitted by someone sneezing next to you. Cough particles do land on places that can make it into your internals, such as eyes, nose and mouth as well as one putting their hands up to their mouths after being in the vicinity of a ebola cougher.

The reports you cite themselves make assumptions with many doubtful words such as “probably” and “seems to”. This means as usual when it comes to the public’s health and going on past experience, we can safely say those in authority on this topic have not a clue what they are talking about or deliberately lie to the public, (as either of these 2 scenarios have never happend before).

Thus anyone with common sense, will take precautions, as well as demanding quarantines for any ppl travelling back here and stopping mass immigration etc.

I asked on here before whether the Irish government had any plans to deal with this if it happens, and the red thumb brigade where out in force. Bring nothing to society , and try kill us all in the process. If it is confirmed , the immigrant council will probably say racist to say that. Sure white people can get it too. Aoife because it would take forever and we would have no tourist industry and it isn’t always possible to screen. The mass screening at airports and ports nonsense reveals a profound lack of knowledge as to how screening works. You would really be talking about pre-screening. That is a whole exercise in itself and expensive. Any Irish response would be useless without a coordinated EU response. There are simply too many possible vectors.

You always get people on here arguing over the smallest details. It kills between 50% and 90 % of anybody that contracts it. As seeing as it is a virus it can adapt and evolve. The more people it comes in contact with the more it potentially can evolve and become easier to contract. That is why governments should be doing more to contain this.

Sorry I have to laugh with the ( this is getting real comments) when over a thousand people have died of this disease in Africa, and doctors battling hard to contain it. One geezer in Ireland is in hospital with the suspected virus and now it gets real. Does someone have to starve to death in Ireland before before famine in parts of Africa becomes real ?

I’ve done work in many hospitals in Ireland, the standards of hygiene and lax attitude to basic procedure have shocked me in some cases. Never been in the Mater I might add.

If this is Ebola, I really hope we are prepared for this and proper training has been put in place to deal with this but I worry knowing what goes on in some of these places.

This is not something we routinely specialise in and I wonder has adequate planning and risk management been put in place.

I am very unimpressed with this reporting. I think it is sensational, and stretching the truth. Your headline this morning was entirely misleading and now has been refuted by the HSE. Doctors have always worked on a basis of using differential diagnosis, and of course given the world outbreak, would be well down the list of those. But there none the less. I dont see how scaring the public is worth it for getting readers. Just my opinion.

Is this really appropriate as a news article? It appears to be reported by the Journal, with an alert, just to drive hysteria. There is a real person behind this story and it will cause a lot of anxiety to outsiders. Would the journal report on someone in isolation with multidrug. Resistant tuberculosis? I’d hope not. Please be more appropriate with what you deem as news.

Calm down, to get infected you have to have skin to skin contact or contact through sneezing. Unlike many other diseases it is not spread through the air.
A contributory factor to the spread in Africa is that in a lot of cases it is customary to wash a body very quickly after death. And of course the washers get infected.

Ladies and gentlemen please calm down. You don’t know the circumstances of that poor persons condition. They may not have been snotting and sneezing on a plane for 7 or 8 hours. And our mediacal screening of all immigrants coming through Irish airpots is second to none. Its not like they were left on a trolly in A&E for 12hours and came into contact with other patiences in the corridoors. And of couse you know how efficience and hygenic our hospitals are and how skillful we are are handwashing between patients. Anyone ask where the patient is been held while the isolation ward is being prepared. I am not blaming the Doctors or Nurses for this situation, but can we really trust the HSE to deal with anything in this country…..

Immigration laws have no impact on the spread of a disease, unless you propose to ban Irish people and long term residents from foreign travel that is not fully necessary (no holidays abroad for anyone ever!) in case they catch anything while out of the country and you add a further restriction on movement within the island to prevent mixing of people in case there are potential pathogens which sneaked in anyway. Such a society might resemble North Korea however and our small open economy would pack it in and be killed off quicker than you could say boo.

Ebola is a very serious disease. Hopefully it turns out the suspected case is not Ebola. If it is, hopefully it is contained. For all the criticism of the HSE, I think we can be confident they will be able to contain it and if any temporary restrictions on our lives are needed, that these will be handled quickly and efficiently. It is not a time for racism.

Securing one’s borders, stopping mass immigration has a massive effect on helping to stop spreading the disease. There are far more Africans travelling to Europe than there are Irish people travelling to Africa. It is far easier to quarantine any Irish person coming back from Africa than sussing out Africans who travel here or are already in the country.

Also if immigration had no impact on the spread of disease African countries would not be securing their borders. You really made a stupid comment.

Only the Mighty Personal Virus And Cancer Killer can stop the deadly Ebola virus and disease once and for all – that is just an exercise for a minute a day for prevention and for 3 minutes a day for max. 7 days for the sick person to get cured. The price of the Virus/Cancer Killer for the whole world is 340 billion bucks. I guess the Big Boys will arrange the payment as soon as possible as for the life on Earth to be restored to completely normal, for nobody on the planet is protected 100% against any viruses – the Big Boys included.
