'Appalling and abhorrent': Pregnant woman sentenced to flogging and hanging in Sudan

The Christian woman received the sentence because of her religious choice and for being married to a man of a different religion.

A COURT IN Sudan has sentenced a heavily pregnant Christian woman to flogging and death by hanging.

The Sudanese woman has been convicted of ‘apostasy’ for her religious choice and ‘adultery’ for being married to a man of an allegedly different religion.

Meriam Yehya Ibrahim is eight months pregnant and currently in detention with her 20-month-old son. Her death sentence was handed down this morning after she refused to recant her religion.

The woman was raised as an Orthodox Christian, her mother’s religion, because her father, a Muslim, was reportedly absent during her childhood.

She was arrested and charged with adultery in August last year after a family member reportedly claimed that she was committing adultery because of her marriage to her Christian South Sudanese husband.

Amnesty International said the court added the charge of ‘apostasy’ in February 2014 when Meriam asserted that she was a Christian and not a Muslim.

Anmesty’s Sudan researcher Manar Idriss said this morning that the sentence for this woman is “appalling and abhorrent”.

“Adultery and apostasy are acts which should not be considered crimes at all,” Idris said. “It is flagrant breach of international human rights law”.

“Amnesty International believes that Meriam is a prisoner of conscience, convicted solely because of her religious beliefs and identity, and must be released immediately and unconditionally,” the researcher continued. “The right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion, which includes the freedom to hold beliefs, is far-reaching and profound; it encompasses freedom of thought on all matters, personal conviction and the commitment to religion or belief.”

He had a simple approach to capturing the artist:

From Electronic Musician, a 2007 interview with Phil Ramone. At the end of the interview, he describes a studio microphone technique he employed while working with Mick Jagger.

“On those Sinatra sessions, I went to Ireland, and Bono was gonna sing a duet. And Bono said, “Well, tell me what Sinatra did,” and I set it up, not quite the same, but we put big speakers up in front of him. He jumped around on the couch, performed, and I told him the big secret was just to keep your thumb out of the way. There are certain habits artists take from the stage into the studio because they are more familiar with the stage, with how a PA reacts. So we brought in the PA, and I had the system on for him, but it was just an enhancement of his voice, just a little something for the room, and the track was pumping!

You know, it’s just the exact opposite of what you may learn in a proper recording school, but I know from all of the years spent messing around that you have to try things. And I’ve done that in a situation once with Mick Jagger and the hand-held/PA deal. The hand-held mic was what was going to work for him, we pulled in a PA, cranked the speakers up, and everybody said, “Whoa! The leakage. The leakage!” And I said, “I don’t know about you, but this is what the Rolling Stones do, this is what they have learned to sound like.” It’s not about worrying about leakage, or how much bass is on the floor. It’s about getting them in their element.”

    RIP Phil
