The 9 at 9 Nine things you need to know by 9am: Aer Lingus heads to LRC to avert flight cancellations; what US diplomats really thought of Ireland’s politicians and the girl stoned to the death because of a beauty contest.

Every morning, TheJournal.ie brings you nine things you really need to know as you start your day.

1. #OMBUDSMAN: There has been an increase of one third in the number of complaints to the Ombudsman for Children. The provision of education and healthcare made up the majority of the 1,200 complaints in Emily Logan’s report, which will be published today, RTE reports.

2. #SHOOTING: A man in his 40s is still being questioned following yesterday’s shooting, in which a woman in her 50s was shot and seriously injured while she was working in a shop in Balla, Co. Mayo. The victim of the shooting is named this morning as mum of five, Dympna Walsh. Her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. No motive has yet been established.

3. #AER LINGUS: Aer Lingus will attend talks at the Labour Relations Commission this morning in an attempt to resolve a row over rostering with pilots and avert possible flight cancellations next week, RTE reports.

4. #WIKILEAKS: Leaked Wikileaks cables reveal how American diplomats really saw the Fianna Fail leadership: Bertie Ahern was a “sociable loner”; Willie O’Dea had “virtually no experience” in military matters; Michéal Martin was “a media hound”; Mary Coughlan was “bright and capable and Brian Cowen, surprise surprise, “liked to socialise”, the Independent reports in its print edition.

5. #BREAST CANCER: Researchers from Trinity College have made a breakthrough that could help reduce the risk of breast cancer metastasising, the Irish Examiner reports.

6. #OOPS: Germany has admitted Spanish cucumbers are not to blame for the e.Coli outbreak, which has killed sixteen people and left 1,200 ill in several countries. Unfortunately, it has no idea what is. Meanwhile, Spanish farmers are losing €200 million a week, Reuters reports.

7. #STONED: A teenage Muslim girl has been stoned to death in Ukraine after taking part in a beauty contest, amid suggestions she may have been “punished” for flouting Sharia law, the Telegraph reports.

8. #SHOCKER: Brace yourselves. Standard & Poor’s has had something positive to say about Ireland…it says there’s a “good probability” of us returning to the market next year.

9. #PEPPA PIG: The pint-sized cartoon piglet has become a billionaire, kind of, after the company eONE entertainment that owns the rights to the TV series signed a deal with Fisher Price. Now that’s something to jump in muddy puddles about.

Me, my sister and my brother have Alpha -1 and are tested every 6 months in Beaumont by Prof McElvaney and his team. They are amazing! And from the moment we all got diagnosed they have taken care of us to the highest standard. We are lucky to get diagnosed so early in life as usually, people who find out they have it only discover it because they already have COPD or liver cancer. We have the option to intervene and take care of ourselves as best we can. That means not smoking and not being around smoke.
For an Aplha -1 patient, smoking one cigarette does the damage of 20!!
Prof Mcelvaney and his team are number 1 for Alpha research! Very literally.

As a carrier of Alpha 1, I’m very happy to see this article & hope it creates more awareness. I only found out by chance that I had it & have since been attending Beaumont Hospital. The Alpha 1 team there are fantastic (especially Peggy) & have given me the best care possible. Thank you.

I was diagnosed in 2011 after 2 years of consistent chest and long infections with double antibiotics to clear it up ..I stopped smoking in in 204 as I was unable to inhale the smoke as it gave me such chest pains .I’m lying in bed now after taking painkillers and hot blanket as the pains in my chest and lungs especially are frightening so it does not make sense to be afraid to to find out that you have it as the more you no the better you get treated and look after yourself. I’m 45 and both my 25 year old nephews have been diagnosed with alpha 1 because they had my symptoms and got checked thankfully they didn’t have 2 wait like I did..knowledge is power .myself and my nephew went to the alpha 1 information day last week and found it very interesting and came away with lots of brochures …The doctors are so good and volunteers to take time out to help us so the least we can do is help them.

I was dx in June of 2010. Please, if you have any asthma, bronchitus, frequent colds, sinus infections, etc. or have any family history of lung and/or liver disease, please be tested. You don’t have to have symptoms to have Alpha 1. For more information go to http://www.alpha1.org.
