GARDAÍ ARE CONTINUING to hunt for a man who hijacked a car that had two children and their mother inside.
The incident occurred yesterday at 3.40pm when the woman had stopped her grey BMW estate at traffic lights at the junction of Zion Road and Orwell Road in Terenure.
Gardaí said last night that the unknown male got into the back of the woman’s car, threatened her and demanded money from her.
He claimed that he had a weapon, and made the woman drive to her home and retrieve bank cards. He then forced her to drive to an ATM at the AIB bank in Rathgar, and demanded that she withdraw money.
The woman was then forced to drive the car to Portobello, at which point the hijacker left.
The woman and her two children were unharmed during the incident.
Witness appeal
The hijacker is described as being about 5’9″, with shaved dark hair. He was unshaven, and of a medium build. He was wearing a dark wax-type jacket and dark scarf.
Gardaí are continuing to appeal for witnesses to the incident today. The woman told them that she sounded the car horn when the man jumped into her car at the junction.
If anyone was close to the junction of Zion Rd and Orwell Rd yesterday at around 3.40pm and saw a suspicious male hanging around, they are encouraged to call gardaí.
Gardaí are also appealing for anyone who may have seen unusual behavior around the ATM at the AIB Bank in Rathgar at approximately 4.05pm to 4.10pm yesterday to contact them in Terenure on 01 6666400, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.

I hope this guy is caught quickly and gets a proper sentence. Hope the lady has good people around her to comfort and be kind to her this weekend.
I know I have the type of car that no one would jump into, “ftbll boots, sand grass, wrappers” plus pennies lol, but I will still lock the car when driving. It has gotten to the stage where you have to think that way.

Here we go again , it’s been proven over and over again in this country that rehabilitation doesn’t work , we have the biggest reoffending percentage in Europe , we continue to waste money on new prisons , prison education , free legal aid and prison welfare officers. Why does a small minority of do gooders have so much power in this country ???
Jail has never been a proven way to deter crime. The government should have no right to lock people away. Revenge gets us nowhere.
You are absolutely correct. I think we should have a policy of limb removal depending on the crime. This coupled with branding the crime type on the forehead of the guilty party might be better for society as a whole.

Jail isn’t the best way to deter crime, but it is the most effective at preventing further crime by those already jailed.

Everything conceivable has been done to deal with prisoners over time, from the iron maiden to hard labour and community service and nothing seems to deter criminals. But our modern way of prisoners rights really seems to encourage crime. These hijackings and there has been others over the last few weeks must be a terrifying experience for the victums.
Spare the self righteous commentary, it’s not our place to judge.
