Armed gardaí arrest man after armed robbery in Tipperary

The man brandished and pointed the handgun at gardaí.

A MAN HAS been arrested after an armed robbery at a service station in Clonmel.

The suspect left the petrol station at Greenane on foot at around 4:30am this morning.

Gardaí were alerted to the robbery and found the man as he was approaching Clonmel town centre.

The man brandished and pointed the handgun at gardaí who kept him under observation and cleared the area.

Armed Gardaí then arrived at the scene, confronted the suspect and arrested him.

He’s currently being held at Clonmel Garda Station under Section 30 Offences Against the State Act.

Nobody was injured during the incident.

Gardaí say that investigations are continuing.

Sounds like the Gardai managed this situation very well.
Never forget our brave Gardai who have been taken away from their families in the line of duty trying to protect the people of the country from lowlives.

It’s not the Gardaí it’s the judicial system. Break your heart bringing the case to court only for some judge to let them off on community service or suspended sentence. Sentencing needs a complete review in this country.

Which is ironic don’t you think? We often complain that because a lot of TDs were lawyers they know dick about economics and social policy issues and tend to make bad decisions in those areas, but in the one area where they do know loads they do no real reform.

Maybe they’ve been inside the system so long their brains only operate on conventional wisdom, and in their warped minds they think it’s fine the way it is.

Pointed a gun at Gardaí? Expect him to do time. I guess we’ll never know though, Journal doesn’t do articles about people actually being sentenced.

A lot of them don’t want it spiderman, they say it will change (in a negative way) how the public views them. The publics always seen them as a community force not a semi-millitary thing like say the French police, and that’s worked out well for them.
An alternative to full armament might be to have firearms in the car that are not routinely taken out with them, have them be trained to use them if needed but not take them routinely. Added to that giving them ballistic vests would be a step forward.

As it stands now they are not totally naked waiting for the ERU to come help theres regional swat teams in every area now that can get to them quite quickly.

True but look at Spain for example, the police their take no shit and if you’re caught they take you and beat the s**t out of you and then hand you over to the courts, obviously I’m not suggesting doing this but still, the guards need a slight bit more of a fear factor

Nice sentiment, but the government/judiciary have the police in this country entirely on the back foot in that regard.
You can attack a guard, be in the courts for two years and get effectively cautioned. It means good people on the whole have nothing to worry about with guards, but gougers have a field day.

my god are u suggesting the guards being a bit tough with criminals. if they were there would be loads on here calling for the guards to be sacked and the whole organisation to be disband. can’t have it both ways

We should be asking what works in terms of crime policy not what sounds tough, the two are totally separate issues. The death penalty is about as tough as it gets, but states that have it and don’t have it, in the US, that are right beside each other, have no difference in their murder rates not to mention the problem of innocents being executed.

It’s been a serious crime to carry a firearm it has been since 1925. The punishment used to be death…it did not deter people.
We need a change of philosophy in the criminal justice system, a change the knackers on the street will feel. 3 strikes laws, focusing all prison time on violent crimes, using alternative punishments for nonviolent crimes…base all laws around restorative justice and the broken windows principle..and use as much community policing and prevention strategy as possible.

Tougher sentences have proven not to work, it’s a change in philosophy we need.

Big problem with sentencing is the fact that there is a lack of prison space and the judiciary know it, particularly those that are charged to a district court. 14 prisons closed in anticipation of the new super prison that was to be built, this didn’t happen, older prisons that were shut down and not fit for purpose, it will cost a fortune to upgrade them not to mention all the money it cost when all the prison officers were transferred. This all happened under McDowell and whilst the concept was a good one, I think the prison should have been built first before the old ones closed- 4,000 spaces approx for prisoners in this country less than 1% of the population! Minimum and mandatory sentencing cannot be implemented whilst there is nowhere to put offenders! My mum thinks the state should reopen spike island!!

Considering they would have been well within their roe to put him down once he pointed the gun at them this shows extraordinary restraint and bravery on their part.
Despite the issues some of them have we should b glad they don’t behave like US police forces and post abbylara they’ve changed the armed units a lot.

Excellent work by Gardai. This clown should get down on bended knee and thank the Gardai for arresting him un-hurt when they could have shot him after he pointed a gun at them. The officers should be commended for their handling of this incident
