Second time this month that US Airways plane diverts to Dublin over crew illness

Both flights were bound to Philadelphia, having left Venice. The flight crew and passengers were not affected.

A US AIRWAYS flight has been diverted to Dublin Airport after crew members became unwell – the second such incident this month from the same airline along the same route.

Today, the US Airways flight 715, an Airbus A330-200 which was carrying 238 passengers and 12 crew members, was travelling from Venice to Philadelphia when the issue arose.

The plane had to be diverted to Dublin due to three flight attendants reporting medical issues.

The aircraft landed safely at approximately 2.05pm.

The airline said that medical professionals are evaluating the flight attendants and it is re-accommodating its customers on other flights to Philadelphia.

There are no reports of illness from pilots or passengers.

Similar incident

On 10 May, a very similar incident occurred when a US flight 71 from Venice, headed for Philadelphia, was diverted to Dublin.

Again, this was following reports that several of the crew had become unwell.

No passengers or flight crew were among those who reported illnesses.

Mmmmm I suggest they check where the flight crews are staying before the flight and see any common foods they consumed . If not look at the catering company might be some chap or lay with a grudge against the airline putting something nasty in the flight attendances food if they have different food from passengers .

It’s strange that is always just the flight crews and not pilots or passengers

Next time we should scramble our air force and shoot the brugger down before it spreads the plague. Better still use the ship-to-air missiles on our new Sammy Becket, that’ll larn them not to come in our air space with foreign diseases.

@ Steve, you need to study aerial warfare more. What you do is watch for them coming in on yer FlightRadar24, then you get in position and lurk at Howth Head and bash into them head on when they try to turn in.Simples.

The airline will have to pay the costs of the emergency response to the incident. Which, judging by the amount of ambulances, paramedics, fire crews and police that would be standard protocol to respond, it’ll be an expensive bill.

The last time it happened the cabin crew complained of fumes in the galley that caused watery eyes, nausea and fainting. They did not suggest food poisoning. I think it was suggested for the first incident.

I’m of the unpopular opinion that this is a “mass psychogenic illness”, where one or two people’s anxiety over harmless fumes or a case of genuine food poisoning spreads socially though a close group of people, they worry each other sick. This would explain why it only effects cabin crew, not the passengers or pilots. “Fumes” frequently spark incidences of mass psychogenic illness.

The test of this theory would be to split up the cabin crew, put them on different flights, where they less familiar with each other, the social contagion would find it harder to spread. But what ever the reason, it’s certainly worthy of the Fortean Times.

To request 10 spare ambulances in Shannon or Cork area at little notice is impossible as you would lucky to have 10 altogether on duty . Dublin has 4 major Adult Emergency Departments if an illness was to spread to other passengers. Dublin is just better equipped for a possible major incident
