Going to see lots of hypocrisy in the comments for this. Remember the dog found burnt outside the Curragh and how people were saying that the perpetrators deserved the same. Those very same people will now be calling the Saudis savages. I’m not condoning the beheading just want to see some consistency in people’s moaning.

Think you may discovered the problem – Mohammed was actually a lad from Kiltimagh, and the lads in the desert are just taking him far too literally. When he said he’d kill for a caliphate, he meant it with the same sincerity as his previous statements that he’d kill for a pint of a porter (omitted from the quaran). He never said dancing, or certain haircuts, were haram, he said they looked hanging, but the Middle Easterns couldn’t decipher his Mayo accent. Similarly, all this jihad was a misunderstanding of Mohammed Murphy complaining about “that lad”. Fecking Mayo lads, causing trouble and starting murderous religions everywhere they bloody go.

Are you actually arguing in favour of the Saudi criminal justice system? Don’t get me wrong, shoplifting does annoy me, and I understand that the additional security and stock costs caused by shoplifting is passed on to people like me, but would I call for someone to have their hand removed, and not surgically, for nicking a Mars bar? I’d still have to say that is probably excessive and me paying an extra 5c for that Mars bar is probably a more reasonable approach. If you disagree however, vote SF – they have a more Saudi approach to crime and punishment.

Egg Head. I have zero problem with both capital and corporal punishment. For Murder, Rape, Child Abuse and Drug Dealing then Capital Punishment is appropriate. For lesser crimes where the felon has had. Numerous convictions such as shoplifting public flogging would be the order of the day.
Our Judicial system is broken. It is not fit for purpose. Spend a day sitting in the district court and watch as people with tens and even hundreds of previous convictions walk out of court with a suspended sentence or the Probation Act. There is very little deterrent in today system.

You may have zero problem with the death penalty Mick, but you’re in the minority in this country. And what level of drug dealing should attract death btw? The lad just feeding his habit through selling to mates, or people supplying drugs on a grander scale, like a publican for example?
And you don’t judge the effectiveness of a criminal justice system in courtrooms, you judge it on the streets. While we could certainly improve our streets, all in all we are a relatively peaceful and safe society compared to the rest of the western world, so our criminal justice appears to be outperforming the more punishment focused systems of the UK or US.

@ Egg Head,, I think may may be in a minority for the very reason I mentioned previously, the authorities get it wrong so many times!!!

I also think that our society is relatively safe and peaceful isn’t down to the justice system, it has much more to do with most of our people being law abiding peaceful people who on the whole still will look out for one another.

Contrary to popular opinion there is (still) a very good neighborly spirit within the country, and for some reason the powers that be want to change that.

Also there in also a sense of entitlement amongst a sizable section of our people, every one now knows their rights but few know or care about their responsibilities.

The killing of the children on a beach in Gaza , the torturing of people in Gaza the beheading of the Digby soldier anything you care to mention that involves the unnecessary murder of civilians – for armies have extended their remit over the years to include civilians as fair game is what needs criticising – not people who make tea – regardless of their tribe or religion.
If soldiers and politicians want to include civilians then they create terrorists – Tit for Tat..
To criticise this beheading is also to criticise the capital punishment in America and elsewhere – the jury is more hung on that issue – rather than innocent civilians getting killed – To the army and politicians it is acceptable losses to civilians – all of it is terrorism !
