Live in a rural area? You could be getting nicer bus shelters soon

A new round of public transport funding has been announced, and includes improvements to cycle paths.

CYCLE PATHS AND bus shelters are due an upgrade with €7 million worth of funding from the Department of Transport.

It is part of a €200 million stimulus package previously announced by government, which Public Transport Minister Alan Kelly said will both improve the public transport system and provide employment.

At least 40 new bus shelters are to be created in rural areas with this new round of funding.

“The winter storms recently demonstrated the shortage of bus shelters in many rural areas,” Kelly said.

The government has set its sights the public taking five million more journeys using public transport this year.

Other measures, some of which Kelly conceded are “quite small” but will result in an improved service, include:

  • Additional hand-straps for the DART,
  • Improvement works at Busáras station,
  • The purchasing of ticketing equipment to speed-up roll out of the Leap Card to cities outside Dublin,
  • Walking/cycling improvements across Dublin and other cities.

You could always attach a few wheels to your new shelter, and a little engine, and drive around picking up a few locals

In other news: The government announced a multi-million euro stimulus to the paper and printing industries by committing to release 1,000′s of press releases about f**k-all between now and next next general election. Ends.

I wouldn’t brag about this announcement as this should have taken place many years ago.
I live in Co. Wicklow and on many occasions have offered lifts to people who were utterly soaked waiting at a bus stop.

I live in an urban area. None of the stops near me have a bus shelter.

This is despite there being 8-10 people waiting for every bus at the nearest stop during morning rush hour.

It’s not like Cork is LA and it never rains…

Cycle tracks and Bus shelters for rural areas sounds great, but I would change it all for a hundred meters of road that doesn’t shake my car to bits.We can see what the government thinks of people in rural Ireland they allocate about seven million and we should be grateful, how many millions for the Luas link in Dublin. This Government truly believes that expenditure stops at Newlands Cross.

Aren’t shiny new bus shelters beacons for the local yobs, to destroy? I thought they gave up on the idea of bus shelters for that very reason a complete waste of money, up for a few days then covered in graffiti, next couple of days you will find them smashed and broken until a week later burned to the ground.

Great plan, like the seats now those waiting ages for a bus can sit in comfort that’s nice isn’t it?
Of course you’ll have to live near to one of the 40 shelters, could that be a problem for some?
Finally surely in most countries government, council or whatever just get on with this sort of thing rather than making a big song and dance, or are we that short of good news? Might have answered myself there.
