Sinn Féin set to be biggest party on Dublin City Council

The party will go from five seats to being the largest party on the capital’s local authority.

SINN FÉIN LOOKS set to make massive gains on Dublin City Council.

The party currently has five seats on the council, but will see that rise after claiming seats in almost every ward of the authority.

Most notable is the Cabra-Finglas constituency, where they look set to pick up three seats, with Seamus McGrattan, Anthony Connaghan and Emma Murphy all claiming seats. That will be mirrored in Finglas, with Noeleen Reilly and Cathleen Carney both set to take seats.

In Ballyfermot-Drimnagh, Daithi Doolan has 19% of first preferences according to tallies, which may be enough for him to bring Gregory Kelly over the line. Kelly’s 7.7% of the vote means the party took ver one in every four votes cast.

In Clontarf, Ciaran O’Moore looks set to take a seat, gathering 10% of votes.

In the North Inner City, Sinn Féin could take three seats of the six available, with Janice Boylan, Gaye Fagan and Jonathan Dowdall all in the top six. Interestingly, independent councillor Christy Burke, a former Sinn Féin councillor, will also be elected.

In Crumlin-Kimmage, Criona Ni Dhalaigh and Ray McHugh both look likely to take seats, coming in first and second, respectively.

In the Beaumont-Donaghmede nine-seater, the party looks likely to take a third of the seats, with Larry O’Toole, Mícheál MacDonncha and Denise Mitchell all polling strongly.

In Pembroke-South Dock, Chris Andrews’ high-profile defection from Fianna Fáil will be met with success, with the Andrews dynasty member topping the poll.

In Rathmines-Rathgar, Dominic MacConraí is in contention, but it will be a tight race.

If MacConraí is elected, he currently sits fifth in a six-seater, it will mean that all of Sinn Féin’s candidates for Dublin City Council would be successful.

This would leave them the biggest single party on the council on 18 seats, with independents the second most represented among the 63 seats.

Einstein’s definition of insanity is “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results”. As an electorate this is what we have been doing. I am excited at the possibility of new ideas and a shake up of the old guard. It is Europe wide at present.

The Fine Gael/Labour response to Sine Fine’s success in the polls has been embarrassing. Their rebuttal has centered on the message that while they are doing a poor job it would be worse with Sine Fein. To me that’s the equivalent of chatting u a girl saying “If you go back with me you’ll get chlamydia but the other fella might give you gonorrhea”. It certainly doesn’t inspire confidence in the Government.

Which if the poles continue like this could be a big possibilities. On a side note a majority of the country voted for Fine Gael and labor in the last general. And if those people thought it was going to be any different than Fianna Fáil then they were very naive. Fianna Fáil did the the damage. And we may very well create a Fianna Fáil and Sinn Fein government. We are billions in debt that money is not gonna appear out of thin air. Don’t you think that if there was a way to pay our debts and keep the electorate happy, the current government would do that

They won’t amalgamate with the other socialist parties because they’re too proud and they know that a lot of uneducated people in Ireland are attracted to the macho and romantic image of a party that still wants a 32 country Ireland and has history with a terrorist group, even though most educate people couldn’t care less about it.

Partition has done more damage to the six counties than a united Ireland ever could have. It makes perfect sense to push for a united Ireland because that’s the only sensible solution. SF are a credit for de escalating the situation in the 6 counties & bringing about relative peace. Would like to see how they get on in government. Couldn’t be any worse than what’s there already.

@Graham; Seriously? The only reason partition has done damages is because some people get caught up on arbitrary borders and cultural identity and are unable to break away from sectarian squabbling, which ultimately comes down to a lack of education.
Most people I know consider themselves Europeans/Earthlings. Working for workers’ rights, against reckless privatisation, improving our healthcare and funding r&d whilst promoting SME development etc. is clearly a lot more important than promoting the Irish language, celebrating the 1916 rising and working towards a 32 county Ireland. In most peoples’ eyes, the former is clearly what should be prioritised.

Sinn Fein receive most of their support from the working class simply because the working class are generally have lower levels of education.

No you have it back ways Ben, they ran out the economic terrorists that enslaved a generation that hasn’t even been born yet.

There’s an old Buddhist saying, ‘The further up the ladder you move, the more shaky your position becomes’. So remember that SF, don’t fall off on your way up or the voters take the ladder from underneath you. The voter holds the ladder, they can walk away just as fast and leave you swinging!

Who ran out the economic terrorists? I thought they left when they were satisfied our crap government was diligently compliant.

Protest votes! Not to be taken seriously….I don’t think. Banks…now that is the problem and how they have brought this country to its knees. Sinn Fein/IRA know how to deal with banks. They rob them. So maybe we have elected the right people to redress the balance?

The Green party came back after the media had proclaimed their demise a few years ago. Good work to Eamon Ryan. Many of the left wing parties are divided amongst themselves on so many core issues but the Green party stood by its principals. The thrash talking of the Green party will not stop the supporters of that party and lets hope the Green tide washes across the continent of Europe and in the neighbouring island of Britain.

Hi just reading the comments posted regarding the elections. Fantastic amount of passion being displayed from all sides of the debate. One comment I noticed where there was disquiet about the bondholders being paid.
When the decision to pay the bondholders was made, it was made before the enactment of the EFSF, this was the stability fund created by the Commission to cover any potential bailout packages for Union members.
The nation did not have any bailout bond or system to rely on. At the time our budget deficit was in excess of 25 Billion, we therefore would not have been able to fund ourselves.
Hindsight is a great thing, but real decisions are made in real time with only the information available at that time.
