Adams thinks Kenny should leave government, not be discussing future coalitions

As for Sinn Féin and Fine Gael sharing power? “It would be a most unlikely alliance.”

20140525_184336 Gerry Adams in Castlebar this evening. Orla Ryan / TheJournal.ie Orla Ryan / TheJournal.ie / TheJournal.ie

WHEN ASKED ABOUT the possibility of a Sinn Féin Fine Gael coalition, Gerry Adams laughed and said it was “most unlikely”.

Earlier today Taoiseach Enda Kenny refused to rule out such a union after the 2016 General Election.

Speaking in the same building in Castlebar – the count centre for the Midlands North West constituency – just a few hours apart, the pair seemed to have different views on any possible alliance.

On the contrary, Adams said that the election results indicated it was time for Fine Gael to leave government.

“Enda, It’s time to go. You were elected on an entirely different mandate from the one that you and the Labour party have implemented.

I think it would be a most unlikely alliance. His is a party of conservatism, of austerity. Sinn Féin do want to be in government, of course we do … but we need a mandate in the first instance and then we need to negotiate a programme for government.

“It’s a decision our Árd Fhéis would make if we came to that point but I can’t see any real common ground between us and the Fine Gael leadership on any issue, except maybe Mayo for the All Ireland.”

“Hungry for change”

Referencing recent comments made by the party’s finance spokesperson Pearse Doherty, Adams noted: “We’re hungry for change but we’re not hungry for government. We need the terms right. We’re not going to leave our principles at the door just to go into government … it’s obvious that’s what Labour did.”

“Fine Gael are a conservative party but they made a lot of promises as well that they didn’t keep and they can’t excuse it. That’s what I found on the doors, what people were offended by was the way they were taken for granted.

As Pat Rabbitte said famously: ‘That’s the sort of thing you say during an eleciton campaign.’ I think people were very offended by that.

Adams said it was wrong to dismiss the gains of his party and independent candidates as “a protest vote” or a “scolding or a rap on the knuckles” for the government.

“This is no such thing. it is deeply rooted. It is a seismic shift in the political landscape here. It’s been dominated in this state by the two big parties – Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael, and occasionally Labour being appended to that, but now Sinn Féin’s here and Sinn Féín’s here to stay.”

Peace process and the Adams arrest

Adams said the party remains focused on the peace process, adding that he will be meeting with senior politicians in Washington this week about “the need to get the proposals by Richard Haass and Meghan O’Sullivan into advancement as quickly as possible”.

“One of the good things that came out of my arrest was that the governments were forced to acknowledge that there were difficulties in the peace process. Now that they’ve acknowledged it, we’re looking to the Taoiseach, we’re looking to the British prime minister to do something about it.”

Adams said his party’s success this weekend was the result of “a lot of very, very hard work by a lot of good people”.

Euros 2014

He said he was confident about the chances of Lynn Boylan, (Dublin) Liadh Ní Riada (South) and Matt Carthy (Midlands North West) all secuting European Parliament seats.

Carthy said that exit polls and tallies were indicating “conflicting” outcomes but said he was ”fairly relaxed”.

He noted that it was a “massive weekend” for the party, but added: “We can’t take anything for granted.”

Interesting new political landscape this morning. Now we will see just how “Great” Britain is.
It is no longer a United Kingdom though, with Scotland and Northern Ireland voting strongly to remain in the EU.
Britain is deluding itself if it thinks that the EU can’t survive without it and will collapse. It is Britain that will collapse and implode. The fall in the value of sterling to 1980s levels is not a temporary glitch. International corporations will downgrade their UK based bases dramatically as they no longer will have an open conduit to Europe.
Britain will now stand,(or fall) alone…

No Gabby. The Socialist party in Britain (under the Trade Union and Socialist Coalition banner) campaigned for Leave on a socialist basis which has precisely nothing in common with Farage’s jingoistic bile as explained below:

Dave Nellist, the former Labour MP who now chairs TUSC:

All the opinion polls are showing what we have experienced on the ground – that what working class Labour voters do will be critical in deciding the outcome of the EU referendum.
For that reason the government, and the majority of the capitalist establishment in Britain who desperately want a Remain vote, are determined that the voice of Leave should be dominated by pro-market, pro-austerity politicians who will argue their case within the same economic and political framework as the equally big business-dominated ‘Britain Stronger in Europe’ Remain campaign.
TUSC, on the other hand, would have offered a completely different standpoint and in providing an anti-austerity, anti-racist and socialist alternative to the EU in the traditions of Bob Crow and Tony Benn would have been particularly attractive to Labour voters.

A great British socialist Wally Kennedy sums up the Leave vote:

“This was a vote against the Establishment and austerity.
The political and Financial elites are ‘shocked’ at the result of the referendum. They would be of course – they are so disconnected from the daily struggles of the people; they just don’t get it.
Despite the vicious campaigns to present and portray the working class as lumpen bigoted racists (a tiny number are) – all the fear-mongering whipped-up in the media has not had the desired effect of frightening them into submission.
The threats of impending doom had little or no effect on those who have nothing to lose – including the growing numbers of the middle class who have been driven into the ranks of the workers – and who have had enough of becoming even more insecure and impoverished, while the rich elites got even richer, greedier, more arrogant, unaccountable and detached.
People have had enough of insecurity, grinding austerity, poverty, cutbacks and lack of public services. They are fed up of debt, of high rents, poor housing, low-pay and zero-hour contracts. (Sometimes those fears and anger have been expressed in backward terms and using racist language).
They are fed up of being judged and vilified by those who live in relative comfort and who look down their noses and sneer with such contempt. For them hardship is another planet.
They are fed up of being used as voting fodder by a Labour Party, who for decades have turned their back on basic Labour values of common ownership, accountability and community.
The process was encapsulated by Blair’s arrogant response when asked about his abandonment of his working class base support – “Who else are they going to vote for?”.
Well in May 2015 … 4 million voted for UKIP – but 23.3 million did not vote for anyone … a figure greater than the Tory and Labour vote combined.
I urge every worker to join a Trade Union and organise and hope that Jeremy Corbyn will now correct his mistaken strategy on the referendum and campaign and demand a General Election.
They must stand on a clear and bold anti-austerity, democratic Public ownership and pro-working class platform.
I believe that this process will be repeated right across Europe.
There are dangers if we don’t act decisively – but what a landslide there could be.
Up the workers – organise everywhere for socialism.”

    @Ben

Britain was created by a western European native people. They are ethnic British, people like Indians who came to Britain are not ethnically British, they are ethnically Indian.

But of course this is exactly part of the reason people are voting to get out, because people like you deny them their ethnicity, identity and culture, while you wouldn’t dare say that about any African or arab. The hypocrisy from the multiculturalists is astounding. People have had enough and one consequence of your anti indigenous European, is our asserting our indigenous and ethnic rights.

Are you advocating the denial of the right of all peoples to their native exclusive territory, a policy which is defined in the UN charter as genocide?

Junckers (along with the likes of Jose-Manuel Barroso who similarly dismissed the Irish public some time back) is the epitome of everything that is wrong with the EU – almost a self-caricature – so much so that they don’t even realise that their arrogant out-of-touch comments are like a red rag to a bull to many ordinary EU citizens.

Rusty nuts they didn’t have uncontrolled migration. In terms of migrants from outside the EU such as Pakistanis it is entirely within the gift of the U.K. Not the EU. In terms if movement within the EU from the former enlargement countries the EU chose to allow free movement from the start. It could have opted out for a period of years. The U.K. immigration system is in crisis but most of this is entirely down to them and their relationship with former commonwealth counties. The EU is simply a convenient scapegoat.

Darren, multi nationals won’t be as worried about our relationship with the U.K. so much as our relationship with the away which thankfully remains intact. Companies hate uncertainty. They will want tot protect the relationship with the EU especially in order to give them regulatory certainty. They won’t get that in the UK for several years while a new deal is thrashed out.

    @felecity

How is being anti immigration (pro controlled immigration) racist?

The working class simply cannot compete with foreigners on the job market for the jobs they used to have because the wages have plumeted due to cheap labour. Its a corporations wet dream. Mass immigration decreases living conditions for the working class, immigrants. And then when its to late to change anything it starts to affect the middle class then everybody gets in arms about it.

The best thing for a nation is yo chose who to being into its country. Yes, i do want a highly qualified doctor but know I don’t want somebody who had been on welfare for over 2 tears or committed crimes in their own country. Its not racist, its logical.

or attraction will drop off the cliff… the UK can now offer lower corporation tax to NI, Scotland and reduce their financial tax to zero (if they want). They can also negotiate favourable trade deals for the UK with the EU to allow them be the gateway and Europe. the implication is that we will be an EU backwater with ties to an ex member. Our low corporation tax fudge was only workable by transfers to the UKs Caribbean islands, which are also now… outside of the union.

People will have a 2 year period ( Art. 50 discussion period) to make up their mind, apply for citizenship or not. They wont be in the EU however the will probably be part of the EEA, so they’ll have gained nothing and lost the right to paticipate in the making of laws, rules and regulations, but they will still be part of the free movement area. Alien8, there’s a huge Brit ex-pat community here in Bulgaria as well. Spain isn’t the only place the British go to. France i think has more Brit ex-pats then Spain do.
The debate on Brexit here was very vitriolic and many friendships have been broken over what is being said.
Many Brit ex-pats have good ex-servicemen pensions, that allow them a very good standard of living here. Others have very good private or company pensions, they probably won’t be effected much, or those with ordinary state pensions also have a very good standard of living.
It remains to be seen what happens. That’s not down to the UK so much. It depends on how the EU will take Brexit. If it wants to it could make life very difficult for Brit ex-pats, as a warning to others who might want out now.

It may be the will of about 52 percent of its people, but that doesn’t mean it’s the right decision

It doesn’t matter to Putin no matter what he says it doesn’t affect NATO which in turn has nothing to do with EU.The EU are reliant on NATO to pick up the slack on their lack of spending on defence and with Trump making it clear that the USA will no longer carry the burden for defending Europe maybe it’s Merkel and Co who should be worried.

A ‘United States of Europe’ I believe is the ethos of the ‘ever closer union’. It wasn’t the EU that brought peace in the 1950s to Europe – it was NATO, the EU small had a role though, but only at the time. You’re right, the EU has gone long past conflict resolution, my grandparents didn’t vote for what we have today and they wouldn’t have. Unchecked immigration for 500m+ people from relatively poorer countries is not good for any country. And the only way Remainers can argue against that point is by screaming RACIST!! People have woken up and it’s refreshing as hell.

There’s nothing wrong with controlled immigration but what is happening now is just ridiculous and when more countries join it will be more out of control. I agree very refreshing – delighted they did it!

Except British fears of immigration has very little to do with EU states. British relationship in the popular psyche has more to do with their ex-colonies (Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nigeria, etc) . The Leave campaign exploited these fears despite the fact that it has NOTHING to do with the EU and NOTHING will change in relation to this (UKIP poster as an example)

Working class Britain had an issue with Polish and other Eastern European countries but every study has shown that these groups had a positive effect on the economy

I will respect the British decision but I don’t believe it will benefit anyone sespicially “the man on the street”.

Kevin, the free movement of labour within the EU was a disastrous mistake when it grew so fast with the under developed ex ussr states of eastern Europe. Where are these people going to go…obviously one direction…the developed west side. Restriction should have been placed until the new economies grew. The problem is there are too many have people telling the have bots how well off they are in the EU and these good folk have had enough.

I woke up today to find our ‘stuff’ was effectively 6% more than it was at 10:00pm last night on the UK market.

When you think about it, this is entirely Cameron’s doing: he gave the sceptics a referendum to get back into power, never actually thinking it would ever happen, let alone the result. Major, major self indulgent power trip.

I don’t know if anyone writing here can remember Ireland in the 60s and 70s. It was a $hithole. Even the most deprived of the Ostbloc countries who since joined the EU was modern in comparison. It’s easy to blame the EU for everything bad that happens in Ireland but it was the EU and EU funding that made it what it is today. As for the series of disastrous governments that Ireland has had, well that’s down to the people who voted them in. It should also be noted that now that Britain has voted for Brexit Cameron is going to fall on his sword. It’s only in Ireland that Kenny could be given his marching papers by the electorate and march back as Thosaigh; a grand state of affairs. Brexit will be a problem for the EU and for Ireland but get a grip lads, if Ireland left the EU it would barely even be noticed.

Torn by this one. Admire the Brits for showing balls but now we have no ally in Europe. We needed them in. Either way the order needed a good shake up, it was stale and and getting ever more overbearing. Only a crisis like this would ever pull the rug on the federalists. But now we all face uncertainty and I hope we can navigate that.

If the EU unravels I suspect even UKIP will be scared. While Europe is a continent deep in history that’s given the world some of the finest writers, artists, foods, creativity and architecture over the centuries, it’s also a continent besieged by conflict that’s given birth to two world wars, fascism, the Holocaust, and numerous periods of fighting and chaos between its countries. The fact that the past 50 years has seen nothing but relative peace, economic growth and stability in the region is no coincidence. Barring the economic crisis from 2008 until recently (which was caused by the capitalist system and the Americans selling dodgy mortgage backed securities and not by the EU), life has been relatively good for the people of Europe. And all you have to do is look at the Middle East, and Central America to see how numerous countries and cultures living side by side is never a guarantee of peace, stability or good living standards even in “modern times”. Why risk all that? All the issues that currently face working class Brits (and which undoubtedly helped with the protest vote) will continue to face them outside the EU and may even get worse now that the Torys are unshackled from the “burden” of the EU’s employment and social equality legislation. The EU is by no means perfect, but what government structure is? When you have numeeous countries all trying to get along, then compromise is always needed and someone has to take the odd loss in order to get the next gain.

this needed to happen, the EU has become a bureaucratic cesspool with only itself to blame. Now in the weeks ahead will come the avalanche of other countries looking to leave this failing political union. Anti EU sentiment is greater in France than in the UK, There are calls for an immediate referendum in Denmark anti EU sentiment is on the rise all over Europe and this is the beginning of the end for the EU s we know it now.
Greece will need yet another bailout next month, portugal and Spain are not far behind and the eurozone’s third biggest economy Italy is under serious pressure. All of these problems existed before BREXIT. Now watch how the central bankers will try to pin all these issues on britain leaving the EU. These issues existed long before any referendum and are largely down tho the euro/Ecb.

Put in simple terms, as the pound looses value then exports become cheaper, this means more being sold which in turn means more profits and more jobs. This means then more tax being collected and this then means the U.K. Government doesn’t need to borrow money internationally then and when the government isn’t borrowing money then they can get rid of austerity but then the IMF / Troika would have less control over what the government does then I suppose???

the UK insisted and they finally managed to join the EU after several applications had been rejected; then the British governements were a pain in the neck, could only say “no, no, no” to any attempt to deepen the European construction, and received all sorts of compromises, while many politicians kept on blaming Europe for everything, including austerity while people kept on voting for the Tories… and now they leave.

They cannot remain in the EU and not leave the rump UK. The Union flag will have to be remade to exclude the cross of St Andrew and St. Patrick. The Queen must be very annoyed with the subjects who have now unwittingly signaled the breakup of the U.K. Historically in the political sense Scotland and Ireland tend to favour more with Europe and less with Britain. The weakened EU will continue to face the silent infiltration from the Middle East. Centuries after Lepanto and the siege of Vienna. History repeating itself with a subtle twist.

At the rate the Irish State hands out citizenship and passports, the Irish citizenry could rise quite quickly by millions or tens of millions.

Given the free movement arrangements between Britain and Ireland the UK government would be obliged to review those arrangements if the Irish State continues to issue passports to all comers.

The Irish Government needs to be alert to this danger and take steps to address it.

Our government must now get the finger out and build the infrastructure and social housing to accommodate enterprise and jobs relocating. If the north were to leave and remain in Europe then Belfast could see a huge increase in employment and significant growth. That all said I think it’s a sad day for all

Better be no revote. Surprise surprise a lot of people are writing to the gov, unwilling to accept the democratic vote, What a load of anti-democracy chatlatans they’d never tolerate so many campaigning to redo the vote had there been a remain outcome. People are such hypocrites.

Isn’t life strange! After years of denying the other members of the U.K. the right to self-determination through the use of military force and political coercion, the English, the 5th century Germanic immigrants to Britain, have become Sinn Féiners. The migration-focused out campaign, led by the descendants of illegal and legal immigrants, has won a Pyrrhic victory, and now face the real possibility of total success, that is to become an independent English nation, no longer propped up by its former partner/subjects. I wonder if they will retain the services of their immigrant ‘Royalty’ the Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, who are themselves Germanic immigrants, or will they acquire a head of state who is closer to being one of their own?

Our domestic economy will suffer (weaker pound) our exports will take a hit. Our farmers and environmentalists will suffer from reduced funding. But our financial services industry will experience unprecedented growth, as lots of American capital will transfer from the city of london. Bankers win entrepreneurs and workers suffer. What’s new in that.

I presume the whole EU refererendum in the UK reflects a split in the British establishment’s thinking on what is the best strategy for continued globalisation, rather than a resurgence of nationalism.

For example I noticed there was a split in the views of members and ex-members of the UK intelligence agencies, especially MI5 and MI6. I think I read about three interviews or statements from senior figures in these agencies who recommended staying in the EU. There was also I believe one MI6 figure who supported Brexit and another MI5 senior source who was neutral, stating that the UK security situation would not be adversely affected by Brexit.

A majority UK establishment view is probably that the EU is doing a lot of useful work. To take just defence as an example, a small majority would favour the creation of a European army which would gradually transition to playing a role on the world stage.

On the other hand, a signifcant minority of the establishment probably feel that organisations such as the EU and the UN have been a disappointment and should play a reduced role on the world stage. They probably feel that the EU and the UN have developed too slowly, are mired in nationalistic infighting, and haven’t fulfilled their potential or promise. To take the example of defence again, this significant minority of the British establishment probably feel that the UN peacekeeping force has evolved too slowly to be a global army, and that a EU army would be superflous and a similar waste of time. To these people NATO, originally set up to counter the Soviet Union and the Warsaw pact, seems much more promising as a global army.

To these people, the G20 (and G7 etc) group is probably what they believe is the key to a more globalised world. The G20 is a much smaller and more streamlined group and isn’t a bloated monstrosity like the EU. Decisions can be taken and put into effect much quicker by its participants. A major advantage is that in it, Britain has even greater influence than in the EU.

So a significant minority of the British establishment probably feel that the EU should take a secondary role in globalisation. It will continue to do some valuable work for them, but the G20 (and G7 etc) will now take center stage. With the G20, globalisation will move forward more quickly, and Britain will have a more influential role in the process.

It will be interesting to see how the internal battle unfolds within the UK establishment over the correct way for Britain to play a significant role in world affairs. While most of us can have no influence over it, at least we can sit back and enjoy the circus.
