Stopping of medical card reviews welcomed but government warned "We need a big fix not a quick fix"

The IMO says cards which have been withdrawn should be returned.

Updated 22:58

TODAY’S ANNOUNCEMENT BY the government to stop the discretionary medical card review process has been widely welcomed.

CEO of the Jack & Jill Foundation Jonathan Irwin said, “We welcome the U turn from government on discretionary medical cards policy and the suspension of these torturous reviews that our families have been going through.

These are families with children with life limiting conditions and it’s about time this government admitted that the medical card system is not fit for purpose.

He also added that he still wants to meet Minister Reilly and Minister White to discuss children under Jack and Jill’s wing who have lost their medical card altogether.

“But we need a big fix, not just a quick fix and we will be watching developments carefully and need clarity on new babies coming under the wing of Jack & Jill and how their parents apply for medical cards on their behalf.

We won’t stop this campaign until children with life limiting and life threatening conditions receive their medical card in their own right and automatically, rather than this barbaric system of dragging their parents through means testing.

The Irish Medical Organisation echoed the sentiment from Irwin stating that while they welcome the move to suspend the review “it remains unclear what will happen to people who have lost their card in recent months”.

Chairman of the GP Committee of the IMO, Dr. Ray Walley said “cards which have been withdrawn under this cull should be returned”.

Meanwhile Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Health Billy Kelleher said,

It is extremely regrettable that thousands of families across the country were put through the stress and hardship of having their medical cards withdrawn before the Government finally saw sense today.

He added that “It took the loss of hundreds of council seats to make the government act on the loss of thousands of medical cards”.

Kelleher also questioned if the suspension of medical card reviews is confined to discretionary cards only.

“It is not clear from the Department’s statement today if the suspension of medical card reviews is confined to discretionary cards only.

“Discretionary cards account for just 50,000 of the 1.8 million cards so we need clarification if the other reviews are suspended too”.

The voters delivered a kicking to the government parties especially the Labour liars, amazing how the government has become concerned about the withdrawal of medical cards now.

This country is a complete disgrace. How can they pay these builders who have bankrupt this country 11 million a year and then cut medical cards for children. Nothing will change. I would love to be able to emigrate

@Hairy Lemon: It’s not hat simple though – sure you can emigrate, IF:

    - You can afford it. Your debts will travel with you by the way
    - You have a job to go to or are reasonably confident of finding one quickly
    - You pass the visa/entry requirements (and a foreign language might be an essential too depending where you’re going)
    - You don’t have any dependents, or you can convince your family to go too. This might be harder though if you have a child that doesn’t live with you for example

Not quite as simple as jumping on a cheap Ryanair flight when you’re in your teens/20s heading to Oz for the year!

The medical card is an emotional issue. Whether we like it or not there are people that have them and should not while others are denied a card and really need these. Sine this gov came in I never understand why none of senior hse mgt gave not been moved on as they have demonstrated total incompetence in past and are still incompetent. I would not blame policitians for all failure but I do blame civil servants for inability to execute

Only about 60% of the working age population actually are in employment, the rest are on various disability, unemployment, lone parents payments or students of limited means, also include the of over 65′s who have generous income limits and with the discretionary ones it’s not hard to see how the numbers could all add up.

The number of medical cards given is the real issue ,, criteria need to set ,, that is fair to those of us footing this bill,,, children with chronic illness must take precedent,,, and adults with chronic conditions next,,,
But giving a medical card to the unemployed ????,, or low paid,,, maybe but I need convincing ,,,

Bad logic, If your a millionaire and have a chronic illness why should other tax payers foot the total bill. The long term illness scheme and drug repayment scheme already limit the burden on families above means why should the make absolutely no contribution to their treatment with a medical card.

The sole purpose of the medical card was to provide healthcare for those with limited means, so it’s not a case of either a trip to the doctor or food for the week. If it was not provided for the unemployed it may as well be got rid off altogether. Look at the limits for a medical card €266 for a couple after rent is a pitiful existence without the worry of finding €50 to see a doctor/medicine.

Joe,, fair point ,, except if my taxes are funding it,,, I want it to cover chronic conditions for the individual ,, no matter what their income ,,, the point being ,, society should care the the weakest amongst us. ,, that’s not always the poorest,,,
But your right ,, I haven’t thought it through ,, and don’t know enough about how the existing system is structured ,,, being as it doesn’t apply directly to me or members of my family

If the sole purpose of the medical card is what you say it is Joe (and it looks to be) then I’m afraid the criteria for handing them out is a bad logic. Keep the poor from dying… a good idea but hardly worth much when you’ve nothing but a dole queue and harassment in the welfare offices to look forward… not to mention the countless people who’ll berate you for having a nice TV/phone/few pints.

While he may be in Stubbs gaz what is relationship between his finances and medical cards. It’s easy personalise an issue but look at the solution and not the man. Like him or dislike him he inherited a mess and one of his biggest failings in my opinion is he is too loyal to civil servants in health. If a few of them wre replaced we might see some better execution and less waste. Same applies to justice dept, councils cie

Better do what SF & Inds have been asking for since we came into power quickly before they force us to in Europe & the councils.

Great tactic, assuming the electorate are thick, idiots and/or blindly loyal. People aren’t idiots and the most recent election proved that, backing up and acting like its FG/Lab idea might impress some but some are FAR from enough!

Its the same goverment who refuses to do the right thing regarding the childrens allowance, it should be given to those in need and not everyone. Anyone who has a brain knows medical cards should be given based on medical need and not how much your parents earn and if it takes legislation then get off your arse and do it………

So you support free GP care for under sixes and the UHI which will cover every one? or will you be the first to complain when you have to increase taxes/premiums to pay for it. Having a Medical card on medical need is essentially UHI in disguise and healthy children don’t go to the GP for fun.

The Cognitive dissonance of some people who are against free GP care for under sixes, Universal health and Childrens allowance to wealthy yet expect some well of parents to make zero contribution to their childrens care, passing the burden to perhaps less well of families who don’t have free healthcare themselves. The max any family have to pay is 144 a month combined which is not excessive if your household income is say 50k rather then passing the burden to someone on 20k.
