Video column The Ghost – remembering Patrick Kavanagh

The final episode of The Dubliners series features the poet singing “If Ever You Go To Dublin Town” in a recording made in 1963.

PATRICK KAVANAGH WAS a native of Monaghan but spent much of his adult life living in a house on Dublin’s Waterloo Road.

This week’s Dubliners features Kavanagh singing “If Ever You Go To Dublin Town”, from a recording made in 1963, four years before the death of the poet. Kavanagh’s words are tinged with irony and poignancy as he considers his own reputation and legacy.

Love Kavanagh singing this…..The rasping so of his voice seals the real deal. Great poet…inspired the likes of Luke Kelly and Seamus Heaney….what a gift to the nation.

One of Ireland’s greatest poets and a true original, and yet he never made a penny – whereas Seamus Heaney made a career out of copying him and became a millionaire. Life ain’t fair sometimes.
