Hundreds of cannabis plants discovered in two adjoining Kerry properties

Gardaí found 250 plants in various stages of growth at the two properties.

GARDAÍ HAVE SEIZED hundreds of cannabis plants from two adjoining properties in Cahersiveen, Co Kerry.

Gardai searched two houses at approximately 6.30 pm yesterday evening, Friday 30 May, 2014. During the course of the search, a total of some 250 plants in various stages of growth were discovered at the two properties. Gardaí say the plants have an estimated street value of up to €200,000, pending analysis.

A Garda spokesperson said the discovery was part of ongoing intelligence-led operations targeting the sale and supply of drugs, and that seizures play a “critical role in targeting the livelihood of criminals and reducing their ability to carry out illegal activities”.

No arrests were made and investigations are continuing.

Just make it legal already and tax it like in Amsterdam and the states. Would take away half, maybe more of a drug dealers profit and our debt would be cleared faster. Drink and tobacco are more dangerous, yet they are 100% legal. But I suppose we’d have to wait on an order to do it from our German masters.

So the sale and consumption of marijuana is legal in Germany! Perhaps you might inform us as to when that happened. While you’re at it you might indicate one are where the German Federal Government through their Chancellor indicated to this sovereign State that it could not or should not carry out any action or activity that was legal to do so.
    Thanks Mr Greens.

What a ridiculous statement to make when you look at the consequences. To suggest that anyone should be entitled to make amphetamines is total and absolute lunacy with the production itself capable of causing explosive conflagrations or gases that can kill . All of that can occur before the amateur chemist gets his pals stoned on the product and …oops they die because of potency issues or dangerous byproducts in the mix.
Some of our laws make sense Pierce and some of our contributors clearly don’t.

There is only one reason why cannabis is illegal.
It is because the exchequer makes a fortune out of alcohol sales.
To brew your own beer or make your own wine is a lengthy process. So people don’t bother.
But if you grow your own cannabis it is as easy as ABC.
Only one problem. There is nothing in it for the taxman.
    And this I find incomprehensible.
Alcohol does an unbelievable amount of damage.
    Cannabis doesn’t come anywhere near.
The mind boggles at legislatures mentality for not controlling alcohol and for not relaxing the law on the ridicolous hounding of cannabis growers and the use of same.

I brew my own beer and ale and I assure you it is not a lengthy process. I’ll have a quality ale brewed, filtered and bottled for you in fifteen days and what’s more is I’ll happily put what I brew up against commercial brands. Cannabis takes thirteen weeks in total including drying and curing to produce. Neither are particularly difficult to produce, but I wouldn’t say growing cannabis is the easiest thing in the world.

The only good thing that alcohol and tobacco have going for them is that they are legal. Thankfully so, if they were illegal, crime would skyrocket with people trying to get their nicotine and alcohol fix.
I’m not a user of anything but legalising all drugs is the sensible option.

If nothing else they’d be able to work out what the Irish people think.

Cannabis should be a controlled substance!
It should be licensed, controlled, packaged, labelled by strength and sold to any adult who us capable enough to make a decision for themselves.

Or would they rather this current pandemic of people being shot in the back of the head for its profits, continues?

the war on drugs is ending all over the world but as usual, the Irish are 20 years behind everyone else……the ‘war on drug’ was and is a huge failure. i had an email from my brother last night informing me that in his state in america, Maryland, from October he will legally be able to get Mary Jane from his GP for an on going back condition…….everyone thought that Colorado would descend into chaos when weed was made legal there. no such thing happened. states all over america are seeing that by regulating the usage they are putting the sellers out of business and at the same time gaining massive amount of revenue.

come on you Independents, start the conversation. i live in the north and there is no chance of anything even resembling a progressive agenda happening here but the rest of the island have a chance to do the sane thing and legalise blow……have a bit of sense would you please……also i live in a border area, i can walk from my house to Donegal. a bit of blow for my Rheumatoid Disease would go down very well.

Putting aside the legality issues of cannabis the medicinal qualities of this plant is superb it’s cannabis oil is curing people with cancer in the State’s documented proof it cures cancer google Rick Simpson., Canadian lad doing wonders with this plant. Yet one of the biggest killer’s in our country is cancer from smoking related illnesses and drinking related issues. It will never be made legal due to the fact medical pharmaceutical industry the likings of GSK, Pfizer all these companies prolong people’s illnesses and hence they make more money from the HSE and the government, these companies have major influence in the halls if power all over the world, like ot or not they do. People need to take the stigma away from cannabis smoker’s as been lazy stupid stoners, some of the most intelligent and interesting people I’ve met are cannabis smoker’s, I’m a smoker myself but seriously folk’s this plant has healing qualities that we are only starting to discover. Now with the federal gov in the states shopping fedral raids on dispensaries in the States we will be able to research further. Medical cannabis should at least be available to patients in Ireland they can get it in the UK why not Ireland. There is little if any THC in medicinal cannabis so people looking to get high won’t be able to due to the lack of THC the psychoactive part of the plant. Please people open your mind to the idea of a plant that God gave can heal so so much and has excellent healing properties.

Happened to a friend of mine who left Ireland for work and rented out his house. Not just decorative disaster – although ALL furniture and fittings were utterly destroyed – but floorboards wrecked, baths & sinks all corroded, walls with holes in them, plaster falling off from dampness, the house literally destroyed. Cost an absolute fortune to restore and for some reason (can’t recall now why), his insurance did not pay more than a very small amount.

Legalization will follow a predictable path. The silly medical phase will be followed by full legalization as is beginning to happen in the USA. Canada may go full legal after it’s next election when they dump Canada’s Geo. bush, Harper. Some tourist Business dependent country will legalize and reap massive revenue through the business they divert to themselves. All tourist dependent countries will be forced to follow suit as business interests in those countries get their pols by the collar & cry “we are losing money, for the love of god, smarten the f$&@ up!” If Ireland is near last on this the government will lose more revenue than any Gathering of lovely old folks could ever deliver. Many young people will have many memories of the lands they spent some romantic evenings in and return and return. That could have been Ireland’s revenue and tourist income , but nooooooooo.
Extremely sad. I suppose there is money in letting corporations dodge their taxes back home. That system surely wins many friends…..

Ok most of you on here know my drugs proposal already but I’ll give you a quick refresher:

Basically the big fear is if we legalize it the likes of Phizer will market the hell out of it, do things like stick cocaine in cocacola etc and we will have a society of full on addicts walking around.
So blanket legalization the same way we used to have drink is not a sane proposal, it would leave things WAY worse than what we have now.
    So my idea is:
    1. We license (maybe on tender) one private company to produce and sell them.
    2. The state pays this company A FLAT fee annually to do this, all profits are retained by the state and pumped back into a new specially created drugs agency that will deal with education, addiction treatment etc
    3. No marketing or advertising of any kind is allowed.
    4. Drugs are to be sold in pure form only, not mixed with other products like confectionery
    5. Everyone who has one gets a clubcard type card, where their purchases are monitored and they get advice relevant to their usage.
    6. Over – 21s only.
    7. Before the new system comes in we intern all the existing major dealers and distrubutors so they don’t have any time to adjust. We make sale to anyone outside the new system a serious crime punishable by life in prison.
    8. They are to be sold in specialist centres where they will have access to your normal medical record to warn you of any conflicts. These centres will be away from residential areas and will include safe injection sites, needle exchanges and will have well manned security and medics on site.

Now, most political leaders from Gen X and GenY know something like this will have to happen eventually, it’s one of those political trends that is inevitable like same sex civil rights…so why don’t they do it?
    1. They don’t want to be the first to try, they want all the mistakes and early lessons and hard work being done by someone else, with someone else taking the rap.
    2. [MOST IMPORTANTLY] Even when legal, with dosage and contents regulated, someone who uses the legal system is going to die. Some 21 year old UCD student who does not know he has a heart conditions going to take an X tablet at a house party and die. Then the fallout comes for the person who introduced this system, the tabloids won’t care about this being a saner system, that it would have happened illegally anyway etc logic won’t get through, there will be headlines like SO LEGAL DRUGS ARE SAFER MINISTER? etc
Now the only way to insulate yourself from that kind of fallout would be to have the issue be all party policy (something they should be doing with likes of healthcare reform anyway cos it takes more than 1 govt) and which can they score cheap points with more easily? Taking a chance on a logical sane new system or beating the same war on drugs drum FIGHTING the ministers new ideas…soaking up all the soccer moms worries about ”will they try it now that it’s legal if they would not try it before?” etc
As long as they feel they can score more points by banging the war on drugs drum than taking a chance with a new model, they will bang the existing drum, even if they think it’s bad policy.

The pusher, his boss, and his boss will loose about 70% of their financing and have to eek out a living running swag, doing burglaries etc

They won’t be able to afford all the guns they usually have etc They would be utterly broke.
The circular logic with the drug war is frustrating, esp when you hear it come out of a cops mouth, they of all people you’d think would know better. ”But it’s funding crime and killing people”…yeh that’s cos Tommo and Jayo the mad things are the ones selling it, take that revenue away from them and give it to a licenced state company and its’ not financing anything other than drugs treatment services and those prevention campaigns would have a hell of a lot more money all of a sudden.
If we did it like the proposal I have above, we would increace funding of prevention campaigns by 3-400 times. We could afford to do some really crafty subtle powerful marketing ads etc that would hit way harder than cracking an egg into a pan and saying ”this is your brain on drugs”
