United Airlines flight makes emergency landing in Dublin

The flight, which was headed to Washington from Manchester, landed safely with 155 passengers on board.

Updated 8.32pm

A UNITED AIRLINES flight has been forced to make an emergency landing at Dublin Airport after experiencing technical difficulties while in the air.

Flight UAL101 departed from Manchester and was en route to Washington when it had to be diverted to Dublin. It is understood the technical difficulties on board related to generators.

The Dublin Airport Fire Service and Dublin Fire Brigade were waiting on the runway for the aircraft, as is normal procedure in the event of an emergency landing.

A Dublin Airport Authority spokesperson said the flight landed safely with 155 passengers and nine crew on board.

A spokesperson for the airline said the flight was subsequently cancelled. “Our customer service team at Dublin is providing our customers with meals and overnight hotel accommodation,” they added.

A replacement flight is planned to leave Dublin tomorrow morning.

The airline apologised for any inconvenience caused.

Planes have been diverting into Irish airports for as long as planes have been crossing the Atlantic, I’d take a guess and say there’s nearly one every week or two diverting into either Dublin or Shannon and there has been for years. It’s nothing new.

@Aaron, i know the runway is long enough but it is not long enough in an emergency say brake failure or reversers failure. And when i said Dublin cant handle a A380 i meant the taxiways aren’t strong enough to hold it, when the first 777 came to Dublin that cracked the stand so an a380 would do a huge amount of damage. And if there was an emergency pilots on the a380 would definitely prefer Shannon’s 3km long runway over Dublin’s runway.

It is very true. Google it ! Shannon has a long runway and NASA had a few alternate landing sites around they world in case the re-entry of the shuttle went wrong and they couldn’t make Florida. Obviously Shannon was never used and I don’t think any of the others were either.

Flying to Ireland out of Newark though they used to be the only show in town, I think American Airlines leave from there too but after last May when I took the train from NJ to JFK and made it in a little over an hour it’s Aer Lingus for me from now on.
