We live on Sullivan Street and we were home when the explosion happened. It was easily the most terrifying and surreal experience, walking out of our house to see such devastation. Very sad to see the adjacent house knocked down too and it looks like another will go also. Thankfully no one else was injured, usually there would be kids playing on the road. Amazing really.

” thought to have been a gas explosion, which caused extensive damage to the house.”

That gave me a laugh :)

    ‘Extensive damage’??

Actually, I read saw the pictures and made the comment above before reading the story. Apologies, it was very insensitive considering a man has been badly injured.

No but you are right. Extensive damage was caused to neighbouring houses and the one in question hasn’t got a single wall left standing.

I was a few houses down when the explosion happened. I took the photo at the top of the article. The house itself is pretty much demolished and one of the houses beside it had to be knocked down afterwards. The street is still covered in glass. My neighbours have kids that play on the street. It doesn’t bear thinking about how much worse this could have been had they been out when this happened.

Infirmary road is open again, the house itself was mid terrace so was pretty much entirely destroyed.

They have now demolished the end of terrace wall down to the top of the ground floor wall.
I thought the end of terrace looked ok in the photos, but it would appear not.
The blast was certainly gigantic I live just around the corner and everyone was out their door in seconds trying to figure out where and what the blast was.

The Industry is very concerned about safety. Two week ago hundreds of gas installers protested outside the Commission for Energy Regulation (CER) offices in Tallaght. http://www.aphci.ie/hundreds-support-protest-outside-cer-offices/ They are appalled by the tolerance the CER and RGII have of illegal operators. They have been pushing the regulator to make the householder responsible for employing illegal operators. This a good example of what could happen to neighbours if you are using illegal operators. Imagine if this had been an apartment block, an explosion of this nature is on the way and people are going to be killed. Gas installers are planning another protest outside Leinster House on the 18th June.
