• The former CEO of National Irish Bank Jim Lacey has been barred from involvement in the management of any company for nine years because of his “grossly negligent” behaviour while at NIB.
• The HSE has taken control of a Dublin nursing home, and responsibility for its 23 elderly residents, after HIQA secured a court order to cancel the home’s registration. The Dublin District Court cancelled Rostrevor House Nursing Home’s registration on Friday.
• The Vatican says it will be early 2012 before its report on a team sent to Ireland to investigate abuse is published. Archbishop Diarmuid Martin has voiced his “increasing impatience” at the delay.
• Banks and UK taxpayer have taken a stake in British-owned entertainment chain HMV as part of rescue package, with the chain securing a €250m lifeline to stay in operation.
• A male nursery worker (20) has admitted to the rape of a toddler in Birmingham. Paul Wilson was arrested by police after a teenage girl groomed by him over the internet reported him. Wilson has pleaded guilty to a total of 47 charges including rape and making indecent images.
• Former Minister MEP Pat Cox has announced he has applied for membership for Fine Gael, all but confirming his intention to seek the party’s nomination for the Presidential election this October – while Niall O’Dowd “has the numbers” for presidential bid.
• A murder investigation has been launched after man’s body was discovered in Co Clare. One man has been arrested in connection with the death and gardaí say the area remains sealed off pending a technical examination.
• The EU Commission has proposed €150m fund for farmers affected by E.coli outbreak; however Spain has said that is not enough.
• At least three men are being sought by garda after a postmistress and her son were shot in the arm and leg respectively during a raid at Oulart Post Office in Wexford at 10am this morning.
• An Australian woman who has accused three co-workers of rape says her government should have warned her that making accusations of rape in the UAE could leave her open to being charged with adultery.
• The owner of the News of the World has apologised at London’s High Court today for the “harassment and distress” caused to actress Sienna Miller as a result of it hacking into her voicemail messages.
• A massive number of  new species have been discovered in Madagascar since 1999, it has been revealed. The discoveries include 385 plant species, 69 amphibians, 61 reptiles, and 41 mammals.
• Irishman Keith Whelan – aka the ‘Naked Adventurer’ – has been rescued after sustaining head injury off Australia. Whelan, 30, had been hoping to become the youngest man to row solo across the Indian Ocean.
• The pitter-patter of tiny Tweets: a British couple grabbed the hearts of Twitter users when they decided to post minute-by-minute updates on the birth of their child – from the breaking of the waters to naming the baby.
