What skills does Rehab want its new CEO to have?

The salary for the position is listed as €140,000 per annum plus benefits.

Kerins at Board Meetings Want to sit in Angela Kerins's seat? Mark Stedman / Photocall Ireland Mark Stedman / Photocall Ireland / Photocall Ireland

AN EXPERIENCED LEADER with a proven track record in management and in leading comprehensive transformation and renewal processes in large organisations.

That’s what the Rehab Group is looking for in its new Chief Executive Officer.

The position at the charity became vacant when Angela Kerins stepped down from the role in April.

At the time she cited “the toll” that the public controversy surrounding the organisation’s finances and her €240,000 salary had taken on both Rehab and her family.

The salary listed in the job advertisement is “circa €140,000 per annum plus benefits”.

The group’s turnover in 2013 was €178 million. The majority of Rehab’s activity is in Ireland, but the organisation also has a presence in Scotland, England, Wales, the Netherlands, Poland and Saudi Arabia.

The ad states that the CEO will be ”a new leader for a great group of people”.

They will report to the group’s Chairman, Brian Kerr, and be charged with developing a “strategic plan and associated transformation of the organisation”.

A review with particular emphasis on company structures and governance will be a priority for the new CEO. A critical success factor will be the new CEO’s capacity to fully engage Rehab’s team of committed staff in the renewal process.

The notice states that Rehab employs over 3,300 people who “provide a range of life-enhancing services to people with disabilities and others who are marginalised in society”.

Its services include health, social care, training, education and employment opportunities in social enterprises delivered to 80,000 people.

“Personal values that resonate with the mission and work of Rehab are essential,” it adds.

Think you have what it takes? The deadline for applications is Friday, 20 June.

Until charities such as REHAB pay their CEO and board members less than 70,000 euro per annum I will donate nothing towards them. There are always alternatives such as Barnardos who have the one CEO and all the members of the board are volunteers. This farce should have been dealt with by a complete revision rather than just a pay cut so the recipient is “only” getting paid three thousand per week plus expenses no doubt.
As for answering the question posed. A hard neck would seem to be a necessity.

It still shocks me that Charity organisations can pay €140,000 to Management, how does that work? Its like saying “please donate to pay us”, its actually a very crazy system.
It throws up a question of charitable status as they are now as much a corporation as anything, the tax breaks and benefits they get are supposed to help the needy and those who require assistance most, not in order to pay in the higher brackets, this area needs huge, huge reform!

Why do we need charities in the first place? Surely we pay enough tax to allow the HSE to do this work. (i completely understand that charities are essential, but people have lost all confidence in the management of same). Bring back the health boards? We’re fubar’d.
