PHOTOGRAPHS OF MOTHERS breastfeeding their children will no longer be removed from Facebook.
The social networking site had received much criticism for removing photos that depicted babies being breastfed, though it never had an outright ban on them.
However, some women said that their photos that showed them breastfeeding were removed from the site.
A movement called #FreeTheNipple (link NSFW) was set up, calling for social media sites to treat nipples on female bodies the same as on male bodies.
An official petition group on Facebook saying that ‘breastfeeding is not obscene’ has 10,000 members, and was celebrating the news today.
If you check out Facebook’s Warnings section now, this is what you see:
“We agree that breastfeeding is natural and beautiful,” said Facebook, adding that the “vast majority” of breastfeeding photos are compliant with its policies.
It also noted that photos it reviews are “almost exclusively” brought to its attention by other Facebook members in a complaint.
