THIS WEEK, BRITAIN’S Food Standards Agency issued a warning about the dangers of washing raw chicken.
In Britain, 44% of people wash raw chicken before they cook it, but figures from Safefood for the Republic of Ireland show that more than half – or 57% – of Irish people do the same.
Not surprisingly, two thirds said they do it because their mammies (or families in general) have always washed it under the tap, while one in five said they do it because they saw it on TV.
The respondents in this survey were those who said they were responsible for cooking at home and 94% of them said they would describe themselves as “confident” in their cooking skills.
Well, they’d want to listen up now, because our own Food Safety Authority has said they recommend the same as their counterparts in the UK.
Jane Ryder of the FSAI told TheJournal.ie that those who wash raw chicken are “just splashing all of the campylobacter and germs from the chicken all over the kitchen”.
Campylobacter is the main cause of food poisoning in Ireland and the number of cases peaks in the summer months.
Last year, 2, 388 people became ill because of it with the majority of these cases being in the 0-4 years and 20-24 years age ranges. For most people, it means a couple of days with a dodgy tummy, but babies, the elderly and other vulnerable people could become seriously ill because of the bacteria.
It can also cause Guillain-Barre syndrome, which can leave victims paralysed.
“Cooking kills campylobacter but when you’ve splashed it all on your counter, you’re not going to cook your counter afterwards,” Ryder said. “No one thinks about getting food poisoning from it.”
Her advice is to avoid cross contamination by cooking your raw chicken directly from the container or bag it came in, use separate utensils and cutting boards for chicken and other foods and wash those hands.

Yeah – you know Arthur Guinness once ran a small brewery – had a quality product and well look what happened. I say we burn down their breweries before they too commercial… also not everyone should buy them cos then they’ll get more money and seek to expand.
Now i’m off to work after a nice cup of tweeks coffee.
He did Gabby. Then his company bought up breweries around the country just to close them down. They used their brand power to force other competitors out of the market. Soon they had a monopoly and controlled the taps of every pub in Ireland. Nobody said Guinness was a bad beer, but many lamented a lack of choice. You can have Guinness, Smithwicks or Harp. Nothing else. Eventually they got adventurous and replaced Harp taps with Carlsberg and Budweiser. And so it remained until some brave entrepreneurs tried to challenge the status quo.
Prefer their Bay Ale but we’ll done to them though

Buried at sea is the Galway Brewing Companies stout. Tried it before, very strong flavour. Wouldn’t be to alot of peoples liking. Foam and fury is a really nice double IPA.
I think some people can be shocked when they discover that beer actually has a taste!
Try “White Hag Oatmeal Stout” amazing!
Even more shocking is the hangovers some of the “craft” beers give. Reckon quality control is out the window on some of them
Perhaps I am, I asked for a Guinness they said they had none and served Me foam and fury. My bad,sorry guys.
Most big brand lagers are around the 4 to 5% alcohol mark..
Foam and Fury is 8.5% so if you’re knocking them back like a pint of Bud expect a bad hangover!

That is the problem in Ireland. people go on sessions and drink 15 pints. That is why all these Buds and Heinos and others are so popular. But things are changing.
Black Donkey beer is also nice I think its from the West too

I miss the Biddy Early Brewery. They were doing before it was trendy.
So was Porterhouse, Carlow and Franciscan Well. They still exist though Franciscan Well is now part of Molson Coors.
OFAF is a cracking beer as are the other two.
