Public asked to look out for elderly people as temperatures soar

Temperatures will hit 28 degrees today, but the public is being asked to remember elderly neighbours.

MEMBERS OF THE public are being asked to ensure that elderly neighbours are taken care of as temperatures soar.

Elder persons’ charity Age Action has urged the general public to check on older neighbours, especially those living alone, during the warm weather, with Met Eireann forecasting that temperatures could hit 27 or 28 degrees Celsius today.

“While the warm weather is welcome, it can pose difficulties for older people, especially those with respiratory and heart problems,” Age Action spokesperson Eamon Timmins said.

“Certain medications can also reduce people’s tolerance of heat.”

Age Action is urging people to call or visit their older friends and neighours to ensure they are okay.

“With temperatures due to reach up to 28 degrees, older people should try to remain in the shade at the hottest times of the day, pulling curtains on windows which are exposed to the sun, sipping on cold drinks to remain hydrated, turning off unnecessary electrical equipment and leaving windows open to let air circulate.”

Running the cold water tap on the inside of your wrists for a couple of minutes will lower the temperature of the blood in the veins and it will in turn lower your body temperature.

On hot days I mostly stand in a bucket of cold water. On cold days I stand in a bucket of hot water. I don’t get out of the house all that much really.

Eureka! No need for the handles. I going to use a different bucket for each leg. No wonder they wouldn’t give me a job at Google.

Far too smart for ‘em. They don’t like competition.

My mam sent me up to my nana last night to shut all her windows for her, “because she’ll be getting cold now”, when i got there she goes off on one, “dont u touch them fecking windows, the russia match is at 11 and i’ll never stay awake with that heat, come back after the match”. If it was anybody else i’d have told them where to go.

The elderly should stay in doors for the duration of the heat wave to secure future viability. I could save their lives in this intense heat.

27 or 28 degC is not that hot. Has the whole island gone mad ? Do you all die of heat stroke on your hols to Spain or Florida ? No, of course you don’t. This is the Met people covering their bums in case someone falls asleep in the sun for 6 hours, dies and they get the blame for not issuing a warning. Pathetic. I’m guessing the oldies have successfully lived through worse than this. Babies are the ones that really need to be looked after. And pooches, of course.
