Young Fine Gael wants to reduce the minimum wage by €2 per hour

Despite explanations that the youth wing doesn’t want workers to lose money, people are not impressed.

IT WAS ONE of Labour’s pre-election shouts – that it had increased the minimum wage to €8.65 but now some members of Fine Gael want to take it away from them.

In its policy on youth employment, the youth branch of the party (YFG) has set out its views on the current minimum wage.

In a proposed policy, YFG suggests lowering the minimum wage by €2 while, at the same time, implementing an earned income tax credit so workers’ pay would not be affected.

At present the minimum wage rates in Ireland are:

  • €8.65 per hour for an experienced adult worker
  • €7.79 per hour for those over 19 and in 2nd year of first employment
  • €6.92 per hour for those over 18 and in first year of first employment
  • €6.06 per hour for those aged under 18.

Here’s YFG’s rationale for reducing each category by €2:

These are among some of the highest minimum wage rates in Europe and act as a barrier to job creation. With youth unemployment rates of 26% and an overall unemployment rate of 12% in the first month of 2014, a high minimum wage disincentives businesses from locating in Ireland and employing workers.

Explaining the ‘earned income tax credit’, it says:

To institute an earned income tax credit on the part of the government of €2 for the workers whose wages have been reduced. This would mean that although the minimum wage would have been cut, these workers would still receive the same amount of pay as the government would subsidise the difference in earnings through an earned income tax credit.

Put simply, workers would continue to earn between €6.06 and €8.65 per hour but the government would pay €2 per hour of that, keeping costs for businesses down.

  • READ THE FULL POLICY DOCUMENT HERE

Despite claims that the policy is both pro-worker and pro-business, the youth party has been widely criticised today.

Labour Youth came out with a statement, saying that the “State should not subsidise or indeed incentivise low pay and should not encourage a race towards lower wages among employers”.

President of YFG, Dale McDermott responded to questions, pointing out that the €2 per hour would be subsidised and that take-home pay would not change.

However, there were still questions about how the policy would work in practical terms. Would it come from the Department of Social Wefare’s budget? Would there be administrative costs? Would be an upfront loss to the worker?

What do you think of the proposal? Would you like to see it happen?

I think with McDs and most fast food chains its best not knowing what goes into the food. The worst one ive heard about McDs is how their burgers ( in the US ) are mostly made up from a pink sludge which is washed in ammonia. Dont think they are allowed do that in Europe though…

Paddy, yeah spot on and the lazy politicians are putting a sugar tax on soft drinks as if it’s the only reason for obesity. For years I was putting on weight but two years ago at just over
20st I said enough is enough. Started to move more and eat less, it’s as simple as that but I still enjoy the odd takeaway and a lovely can of Club orange over ice. Oh and I’m down 7st.

Tom, went in for a check up recently and whatever measurements the doc used he calculated I was about 5lbs over weight. Doesn’t seem a lot until you realised it’s the same as carrying 5 bags of sugar. It kinda creeps up on ya around the late thirties.Odd thing is that I used to drink, smoke and eat a lot of junk food in my 20′s.. not so much anymore but it’s the sedentary lifestyle that comes with a relatively good job and flopping on the couch after work that’s eventually caught up. Eating healthy is only part of it.

Paolo, to be honest it’s just a phrase meaning I’m not digging ditches not that there’s anything wrong with that and truth be told it’s just a lie I’m telling myself to justify the extra few pounds. Being stuck on my ass 10 hours a day should be a reason to exercise not an excuse for getting a gut. Thankfully I caught this before it started to become a major issue.

Yep people are endowed with free will and personal responsibility but funniliy enough, despite this being the case, obesity, cardiovascular disease and diabetes still exist. Diabetes is amounst the biggest single burden on our healthcare system.. Saying people can choose not to eat junk or eat somewhere else is true but doesnt really add any value to the conversation. People can choose to drink responsiblity and socially but many dont and we see the fall out in accident and emergency departments every weekend…. In short its a cop put to suggest that people can go elsewhere and not eat junk food ( problem solved )….. Fast Food companies have certain reaponsiblities in this respect as do drinks companies.
