250+ jobs to be announced at Cork company

SouthWestern is to make a “significant” jobs announcement later today.

CORK COMPANY SOUTHWESTERN is to announce the creation of over 250 jobs today.

The outsourcing company will make the “significant” jobs announcement when it officially opens new offices at East Gate, Little Island, on the outskirts of Cork city today.

Simon Coveney, the Minister for Agriculture, Marine and Food, will join the Chief Executive of SouthWestern Jim Costello for the official opening of the company’s latest new office.

The jobs

SouthWestern said that 100 posts will be filled immediately with an additional 160 jobs coming on stream over the next two years.

It is a fully Irish-owned company which has offices in Dublin and overseas in Lodz, Poland and Milton Keynes, UK. The new jobs will bring its workforce up to 1,100.

Minister Coveney said SouthWestern’s expansion was a hugely positive development not just for the company but for the Cork region as a whole.

SouthWestern’s clients include: Bord Gáis Energy, the Private Residential Tenancies Board, Independent News & Media, the Department of Agriculture as well as several other local government and public sector organisations.

Southwestern’s Chairman Neil O’Leary said the increasing demand for business services in Ireland and internationally was good news for SouthWestern, the outsourcing sector and the Cork region.

The Chief Executive of SouthWestern, Jim Costello said: “We need more capacity, more flexibility and to extend our pool of talent. Our new employees and our new modern offices here in Little Island will address all three elements.”

We will be looking to recruit sales, administration, account management and multi-lingualpersonnel from the local area in the coming weeks and months.

The company is based in Clonakilty and was set up in 1957.

This is good news can’t you and others just stop with the political point scoring bs.

Not really Norman. There is a blanket of negativity thrown over everything by Sinn Fein and hard thiugh it is for many of those on this SF dominated website to accept the economy is getting better and companies choosing to take on staff is both a symptom and a cause of that.

Super news for Cork and Munster. FDI has been the main driver of many new jobs in the area recently so it’s great to finally see an Irish company creating so many jobs. This is a solid company and a real Irish success story – well done to Jim Costello. Any govt of the day would be all over this and why not? So no surprise to see Minister Coveney attending.

Irish SME’s and mid size companies are the bread and butter of Ireland.

They provide 70% of jobs, 90%+ of companies here.

They build local talent and keep money circulating in the economy. Multi’s are great but they are only a small part of the pie. Smaller sectors GDP like Agri are worth more to this state in retained income that even Pharma.

But this isn’t the creation of 250 new jobs; it’s the creation of an outsourcing company which will replace the people who have been made redundant by Bord Gais, and civil servants who have left on a package. Phone jockeys on temp contracts on €8.65 ph. This is how wages are going to be driven down in Ireland…..but sure believe the headline if you must.

What is it with the relentless negativity in Ireland? The jobs are in Ireland – how would you feel if they were outsourced elsewhere? SouthWestern has clients in Europe and the UK. Outsourcing is now a fact of business life in a globalized world. If this were an FDI story bringing NEW jobs into Ireland many Irish people would no doubt be moaning about how little tax they would be paying the Irish Treasury, ignoring the job creation.

It is negativity Angela. Your presumption that the 250 people employed will be wgat you call phone jockeys ignores the company statement that says they will be employed in admin, accounting and personnel. And frankly a job is a job. There are far too many people raising families on social welfare and not too hard up with it. If that is the option to the minimum wage social wekfare is too generous.

Sorry Angela but the creation of 250 jobs is the creation of 250 jobs regardless of where they are created. This is a good news story and your negative mental fixation has a problem with it. I guess you vote SF.

No, I couldn’t. But by that logic Angela then get rid of all jobs paying a similar wage then. That is not realistic. Ireland has suffered terribly from the recession but these jobs are for Ireland – it would be far worse to see them go elsewhere. I’m not going to speculate on your personal circumstances Angela, but I find the amount of negativity in Ireland astonishing, and I just feel comments like yours feed that negativity. If you or a loved one is in such a low wage job I really do wish you or them the best of luck progressing on to a better one; remember, view it as a stepping stone to a better one. Above all try and stay positive.

Wages are being driven down all over the western world as technology forces them down.

Also global dynamics and the ability to draw on a vast pool of labour across the EU also force them down.

What do people think would happen in a single currency union with open borders.

I am an American manager working for a multinational here in Ireland. I came here in 2005. There is no doubt employment opportunities have changed – but that has occured all over the developed world. When I was starting off it was poor pay, so no change there. But yes, contracts are in general shorter now. That does not mean progression has stopped. The ‘job for life’ is gone, and that attitude should go too – people have to adapt. Difficult but true.
