Fancy a pint of plain? You won't get one in Wetherspoon's

Well, Guinness, anyway. You’ll get Beamish and Murphy’s.

DISCOUNT PUB CHAIN Wetherspoon’s won’t be selling Guinness in their Irish bars.

The UK pub chain is set to open pubs in Blackrock in Dublin and Cork city. The company has spent €2.38 million developing the site of the former Tonic Bar, in Temple Road, Blackrock, creating 60 jobs in the newly-named Three Tun Tavern.

The pub will open next Tuesday, but nary a drop of Guinness will be had.

That is because Wetherspoon’s and Diageo Ireland, who supply Guinness, could not agree a price point that the company felt would allow it sell the stout at its traditional low prices.

Company spokesperson Eddie Gershon told TheJournal.ie that you will, however, be able to get stout in the form of Beamish and Murphy’s.

He added that the company is not worried that the absence of the black stuff will affect business.

“We believe we have a good range.”

The company, which sells Guinness in the UK, says that pints will be priced at €3.95.

€3.95 is way too pricey. Regularly see Beamish at €4!! €5.50 for spirits with free mixer also ridiculous. Hardly a shake up!

Where the value comes in I think is the burger meal and a pint for €8.95. But that has you in the door and you’re paying regular prices effectively for your pint

Im going to imagine the posters above have had it from a bottle. And tbh if that was my experience of it i would say the same. I am not a fan of O Haras Stout bottled, equally i hate guinness stout bottled.

But if you put Guinness draft versus O Haras Stout draft youll be pleasantly surprised.

I admire Diageo for sticking to their principles with this one. How could it be fair competition to sell Wetherspoons Diageo products at a reduced rate?? As it is, their arrival on these shores is a blow to all of the pubs in the country struggling to get by without offering them incentives. If you are happy eating all deep fried food, drinking cheap tasteless beer and going up with your table number and ordering, then this cheap and cheerful, no frills service is for you. If you think that the standard of Irish pub is superior to the tat that Wetherspoons stands for, stay as you are and enjoy a nice pint of Guinness.

Agreed Shane. Living in England since 1998 and by far the worst pubs to go to over hear are Wetherspoons and their close cousin Yates, yes they are cheaper but not a good reason to go to one of the soulless bars. Now an English Themed Pub in Ireland, that would have been the right idea, actually no, forget that, would never work! We are the Theme Pub masters!

Oh Shane,… shane Shane Shane. your spending too much time down the local there. Were Diageo reps through in free gifts so that the pubs exclude the new macro breweries reps.

Its hilarious that you have put up Diageo as some sort of Icon of hope and justice. Is this the same crowd whom were going to chop up St James Gate during the boom and move production off to some cheaper location. Only realising that the location is the best marketing they ever could have hoped for.

The strangle hold they have over consumer choice in this country is actually ridiculous to say the least.

The only real reason I stick to the usual Heineken is that it doesn’t give me a bad head or stomach in the morning. If I’m trying something different it’s hard to know how it will affect you. So I’d take is easy on them. I’d say this is the main reason a lot of people stick to their usual tipple.

Hey hey there mister… Go easy on the hipsters. I love craft beers. I have a beard, flat-cap and over-sized glasses with clear non-prescription lenses. I post interesting pictures of food and inanimate objects on Instagram and I just bought a lomo camera because it looks like Instagram but works on 35mm. I’m thinking of starting to smoke a pipe… And wearing a tweed jacket with shorts in summer. Vinyl sounds so much better than CD… even though I’m playing it through a €99 Crosley/ION and choose to ignore that 99% of vinyl is mastered digitally. I contribute nothing to society but I’m so cool… lol rofl lmfao… Actually, yeah kill me now.

Of course I drink guinness, of course I drink other stuff. Variety is the spice of life.

If we were all the same sure this country would be completely boring.

Damn right too. They are coming into Ireland with the aim of keeping their prices as low as possible. 3.95 for a pint sounds great to me. And over 60 new employees when they open in just the first couple of pubs. The range of Irish Craft Beers they will stock will be far better than most pubs as well supporting local breweries and staff. And if your not a fan go to another pub, but the choice is welcome.

Some people really do write shite on hear. Microwave meals? Anyone who thinks Wetherspoons do microwave meals have obviously never eaten in one of their pubs. As for moaning that €3.95 is too expensive. I was asked for €5.40 for a pint of lager last night in a Dublin pub and it wasn’t Temple bar either. All pints in Dublin are easily over €4. I will happily spend the bus and Dart fare to travel from Glasnevin to Blackrock to drink in this new pub.

They didn’t even use Irish builders for the interiors, there were lines of yellow reg. transits along Temple road during the construction.

I wonder do they think it’s beyond Irish tradesmen’s capability to screw brass number tags onto tables.

Wetherspoons will shake up a sleepy Irish pub trade – and do things their way. That have close to 1,000 pubs, in about 30 years, in the UK – and 5 years ago, their share price was under £3. Its now over £8!

No music, juke boxes, dart boards, pool tables, no TV sport (except the World Cup etc.) or sitting at the bar. Just good beer and food, with fast/efficient service.

Don’t expect a chat with the bar person – he/she will be too busy serving the next customer. In the 10 years time, there’ll be a spoon in most towns here – but none in rural areas. They only open in town/city centres….

These pubs have been a massive success in the UK, a similar market – often putting neighbouring pubs out of business.

Why? In a Wetherspoon, you buy/collect your drink at the bar – and bring it stool/seat elsewhere. The absence of punters at the bar greatly helps a speedy service.

The numbered tables and Wi-Fi links to waiting staff also help. Who wants to sit at a bar watching staff serve – particularly as they will not engage in trivial conversation?

If they couldn’t agree a price point that would allow them to sell it cheap like every other pub in the country, it just means they wanted more profit themselves per pint. Very dumb move by Wetherspoon’s looking for a larger profit margin. I think they’ve underestimated how popular it actually is over here.

There are a number of pubs around the country that no longer serve Guinness. I don’t recall if it was newsworthy when they got the taps taken out and Wetherspoon’s hasn’t even opened yet. This article is great advertising for them.

There will be plenty of other decent and more importantly genuine Irish owned breweries represented when they open. Diageo is big enough not to notice something like this. In fact, they probably love the attention as Guinness prides itself on not being known as Ireland’s budget stout.

    €3.95 ? I’ll take it.
I’m paying €5.20 minimum for a pint of beer in cork city. Welcome the competition!

Do you mind if I ask what beer? Doubt it’s anything they’re selling for €3.95. Heineken is €4.75 for example.

Unfortunately operating costs in ye olde republic are significantly higher than our brethren across the water. It’s why I frankly find it puzzling that people seem intent comparing prices and cost of living of a nation with ~4.5 million people and a relatively tiny economy with one of the biggest economies In the world and 60+million people. No doubt there’s scope for price reductions especially in the publican industry but I’m never going to expect 2 pound pints and doubling up shots for a pound in Ireland.

It’s a small town on the south side of Dublin, not the city centre.

We visited the local Wetherspoon’s pub in Forest Hill South London years ago – mainly to see inside the iconic 1930′s cinema building which they had converted into a pub. What a shock we got. The place was so dirty and smelly but full of characters attracted to the cheapest beers in London. We were minded of that cafe scene in Star Wars!
