Noonan: Dara Calleary "is like an arsonist blaming the fire brigade"

The Finance Minister was accused of failing to deliver a deal on bank recapitalisation.

MICHAEL NOONAN HAS described Fianna Fail  job spokesman Dara Calleary as “like the arsonist that set fire to the building giving out to the fire brigade for not putting out the fire fast enough”.

The Finance Minister was responding to accusations in the Dail this morning that he has failed to deliver a deal on retrospective recapitalisation for bailed-out Irish banks.

Calleary retorted: “You’ve had three years to put out the fire…but you haven’t put any water on it.”

He said that the Government had trumpted a 2012 agreement on the European Stability Mechanism as “a game changer” and “a big deal”.

“Now it seems it’s wait and see”, he told the minister.

Noonan said that a decision will be made on whether or not to apply for retrospective bank recapitalisation in November, when it is anticipated the ESM will be in place.

Last year a deal was struck that could allow retrospective applications to the €500 billion fund.

Brussels, however, is reportedly playing down the possibility of a deal on recapitalisation of the Irish banks.

Nama staff

In response to questioning from Sinn Fein finance spokesman Pearse Doherty, Noonan admitted that the departure of staff from Nama to private sector property companies was “an issue of concern”.

He added that there was no current example of it causing a problem, but acknowledged that many employees may be tempted away from the state’s bad bank as it approaches its wind-up date.

He said that he is “open to discussion” on remedies to the issue, including potentially a “golden handcuffs” deal for employees, whereby some of their remuneration would be conditional upon staying with the agency until a certain date.

Doherty said that “the private sector are poaching the best in Nama…the problem is that the cooling off periods are not active.”

He continued:

“There does seem to be a conflict…there is a massive concern that we’ve allowed that situation to develop”.

I agree with iPhone Joan that politicians should feel safe & should not be threatened on social media or by extreme confrontation no matter what the situation. I would also say to joan herself that politicians should not be exclusive to such protection & that every citizen of Ireland should be afforded the same rights including protection from economic terrorism from people like herself & her fellow tds in the Dail.

Putting the sarcasm aside here, your reaction to downvotes is hypocritical. You criticise verbally agressive dissent and when you’re voted down silently you criticise that too. People are entitled to their opinion, and to voice that opinion. Politicians should be aware of what people think. And while I’m against threatening people as a rule, each one should be taken with a pinch of salt. We don’t throw punches at our politicians here, we paint them taking a shit.

JJ ó Riordan, politicians, like everyone else should feel safe to go about their business but their job is to represent the people. If they don’t listen, then they’re not doing their job. If they claim to represent people and then patronise them, if they make election promises and fail to keep them, then what do they expect? Over the years protests have taken place in Europe, and ended in severe violence. Nothing comparable has happened here in recent times. Protests have been peaceful, often in spite of serious provocation. Hopefully the day has come when politicians realise it is the electorate they are really accountable to, not the Troika and the multinationals and their big business buddies. If they do realise that then they will start to listen and we may see real change. Your comments show no understanding of what gave rise to the depth of feeling the lead to some of the events which took place. I’m not in favour of violent protest but I truly despise this government for its lies, failures and betrayal of us. Joan Burton and the rest of Labour have betrayed everything they were supposed to stand for. It’s not vitriol to call her a liar and a traitor, it’s just the truth

Did she really? Easy to make that claim without proof. She was thrown out of the Dáil. for challenging the bias of Seán Barrett in his chairing of the budget debate. Bias we witness first hand on a regular basis. Incidentally this was also the same day Enda Kenny made threatening gestures towards Mary Lou but no censure for Enda.

As for deflecting from child abuse. At the same time the Govt and FF parties were so concerned about Mairia Cahill and her still unproven allegations (despite being offered her day in court) there were over 8,500 children in this jurisdiction without an allocated social worker. 3,000, yes three thousand, of those children were deemed high risk of neglect, physical abuse or sexual abuse. If you were to accept what MC claims there potentially thousands/hundreds like her in every constituency up and down the country crying out for help. What were our politicians doing about it? Sweet FA. They were too busy baying for SF blood. Hypocrites, each and every one of them alongside our media.

Our politicians are also allowing this to happen http://www.thejournal.ie/children-sexual-abuse-2530771-Jan2016/

If I meet Joan Burton or indeed any other politician I will be asking them why they care so little for our children and their welfare. If they don’t like it tough. Time for them to be called out of their hypocrisy.

    @Kerry Wynne

“…there were over 8,500 children in this jurisdiction without an allocated social worker. 3,000, yes three thousand, of those children were deemed high risk of neglect, physical abuse or sexual abuse.”

Child neglect and physical and sexual abuse of children are crimes and are thus matters for the Gardaí to investigate. So why would it be necessary to allocate a social worker to every single one of these children? Don’t forget about the poor performance of social workers in the Kilkenny and Roscommon cases. In the Roscommon case, the fact that the children’s hygienic needs were not met means that it was obvious that they were neglected and thus that there was justification for taking them into care at an early stage.

With regard to the Maíria Cahill case, I acknowledge that I was hasty with regard to the comments that I made on previous Journal pages. You are right: the allegation that she made was not proven and thus we don’t know whether or not she was raped.

“Our politicians are also allowing this to happen http://www.thejournal.ie/children-sexual-abuse-2530771-Jan2016/”

With regard to that story, I’m suspicious of private organisations that claim to have the protection of children as their aim. Don’t forget that the ISPCC, when it was known as the NSPCC, took children from their parents and placed them in institutions. That fact is illustrated by the fact-based film “Evelyn”, in which the eponymous girl’s father was played by Pierce Brosnan.

@ Ciaran Masterson Yes they are crimes and yes they should be investigated but we are talking about children. How do you suggest they should be investigated? Dealing with children who are victims of abuse be it neglect, physical abuse or sexual abuse requires skills that Gardaí do not have and Gardaí should not have to deal with them on their own. In order for Gardaí to act it first has to be established that abuse has/is taking place. It has to be a combined effort from medical staff, social workers, welfare offivers, Gardaí etc

There has been a systemic failure to deal with child abuse in this country for years and Govt after Govt have failed children, Taking children into care in the early stages is not always the answer and that decision is not the decision of any one worker or team of workers (and rightly so). What many do not realise is that it is the decision of the courts whether or not a child is taken into care. I am aware of cases where trojan work has been done in preparing and taking a case to court and the court has disagreed with children being removed from the home. I do not know the full details of what happened in Roscommon & Kilkenny but it is appalling that children had to suffer. However blaming the social workers is a get out. What about their supervisors? The teachers and welfare officers who no doubt were involved? The medical staff? etc etc. Social workers are a very easy target when something goes wrong but in every case I am aware of, the social worker was one part of a team.

Our politicians are failing children again and again. What they did with Mairia Cahill was disgusting and disgraceful While they were all running around after her, appearing on the plinth, hugging her and holding her up as some God, thousands of children in this country, that they have responsibility for were crying out for help. They failed them and they failed us. Shame on the all, each and every one of them.

I don’t know enough about this organisation to comment but it has highlighted the hypocrisy of our Govt and media. Our media are just as guilty. They have lapped up every soundbite uttered by those who have political agendas and printed the most outrageous claims as facts, vilifying many in the process, while ignoring the genuine plight of so many of our children

Forthcoming is a kindness when lab mouth Joan meets and greets all of Ireland and justifies them being lab rats for Europe and the elite class.

Experiment thesis by Mr Kenny and motor mouth Joan Burton.

Irish people are to be subjected to all decisions by the four headed committee.

Homelessness, heavy stealth taxes, banking over charging , longer than ever hospital waiting lists…

I see why she might feel worried about meeting us lab rats the voters.

Kenny donkey for Euro did not burn bond holders but Portugal did a week ago.

The experiment in Ireland proved not burning bond holders is not good for Europe. Too many people suffer.

If they come knocking on my door beware. I am ready for you.

    @Kerry Wynne

“I do not know the full details of what happened in Roscommon & Kilkenny but it is appalling that children had to suffer. However blaming the social workers is a get out. What about their supervisors? The teachers and welfare officers who no doubt were involved? The medical staff? etc etc. Social workers are a very easy target when something goes wrong but in every case I am aware of, the social worker was one part of a team.”

I’m aware that the Roscommon mother had obtained an injunction but the health board failed to appeal the injunction. That is an unanswered question.

You’ve got a point about the “get out”. Another unanswered question is the failure of the Gardaí to arrest the mother for child neglect at an early stage. The evidence of child neglect was as clear as daylight. The failure to meet the victims’ hygienic needs meant that other children at the school couldn’t bear to be near them.

You cannot have it both ways .You critisized sf when the troubles were on and now you critisiize them when the troubles are no more. The fact is the whole lot of ye, ff,fg and lab are afraid of sf because they have upset the applecart. Lab in particular know they are finished and while I dont think sf will get into power this time I think the penny has dropped for a lot of people of how this country has been run by the elite for the elite.

She thinks she has been governing Ireland as “a Democracy”?

Democracy, or democratic government, is “a system of government in which all the people of a state or polity … are involved in making decisions about its affairs”; NOT by lying to get elected, then doing the opposite of what “the people” voted for.

Her policies have “locked away” a great many people via cuts; mobility allowance, Joan? Ring a bell for you?

What of the “personal safety” of people slaughtered by her policies and cuts? Hospital waiting lists; premature deaths due to delays/lack of treatment; suicides caused by cuts; depression?

Ultimately, if #PhoneyJoan can’t stand the heat that HER OWN actions cause, she should get out of the kitchen.

Politicians should not have to fear for the personal safety, after all we do live in a democratic state. What they should fear is the people anyway – the people who elected them to these positions who should, in a proper democracy, be able to oust them from their positions should they not be doing the job, we the people, appointed them to. We have sort of turned backward in our view of a democratic state and letting these so called “leaders” get away with whatever they like, funded by the peoples pocket-books. However, although most of us are wise to this fact, nothing ever changes…

SF and AAA would break the country again if they made it to power. Renua is a white washed version of FG. We should politely vote out the politicians we don’t want but we should always respect their mandate while they have it. Street politics suits the establishment as it turns decent people away from protest and it gives people like Joan Burton an opportunity to play the victim.

I don’t doubt that our secret service have infiltrated some of the radical groups in order to foment trouble and discredit the protest movement.

For both principled and pragmatic reasons all our protests should be based on a commitment to non-violence, respect for democracy and respect for the law.

Sorry Joan the time had come for you and party workers to knock on doors and answer for your treachery and compliance in a regime which has made life for the less well off and especially our disabled children intolerable. Yes they should beware I will firmly and effectively make them aware i hold them responsible for making my disabled child’s life a misery and our home a prison due to the lack of respite. So stop your threats and lectures on how we should be grateful to you.

If politicians did the job they were elected to do rather than trying to appease the ex bankers who all got cosy jobs in the E.U. then there would be none of that but her saying that only proves once again that politicians do not listen to the people, they listen to their leaders and their leaders only care about impressing those who run the E.U.

The problem is that many people live in the swamp culture of social media, where you can say what you like about others while hiding behind anonymity or non accountability. Any vulgarity or ignorant slur goes. Witness the many contributors to this and many other sites where the most vile and crude comments are made. Many of these comments are violent in intent and influence people absorbing this culture of intolerance to bring it on to the streets. Democracy is damaged in the process.
