Macken House via Google Maps

Where will Ireland's new TV station be located?

UTV Ireland signed the contract today.

UTV IRELAND SIGNED a contract to secure a property for their new TV station today.

The entire ground floor of Macken House, Dublin 1, will be transformed into the new channel’s broadcast centre.

UTV Media plc is no stranger to the building – with FM104 on the first floor and Q102, UTV Radio Solutions and UTV Sales based on the second floor.

Group Chief Executive of UTV Media plc, John McCann, said: “Macken House has been a great success for UTV since we first moved into the building five years ago.

I am delighted that we have secured the ground floor for UTV Ireland, which enables us to keep all of UTV’s Dublin-based broadcasting teams under one roof.

unnamed (26) MARK MAXWELL MARK MAXWELL

“We have seen how beneficial this location is, in terms of surrounding amenities and transport links.

The building will now be our Group Irish headquarters with more than 200 staff located at the premises.

McCann also added that while the UTV headquarters will be in Dublin – the group is looking at regional news bureaux in Cork, Galway and Limerick, to facilitate their national news team.

UTV Ireland’s broadcast centre will consist of two studios, edit suites, corporate offices and news, administration, finance and sales areas.

More than 80 people will be based at the new ground-floor facility.

They will be working across programming, news, sales, operations and corporate functions.

    We don’t need more TV. We need more quality and less quantity.

    Agreed, and the same can be said for radio. Far too many poor quality radio stations around.

    Well, UTV own broadcasting rights to key programs like Emmerdale, Coronation Street, and the Jeremy Kyle Show among others. In 1993 an agreement was made to sell 49 per cent of TV3 to UTV, to raise much-needed cash for investment in facilities. UTV pulled out of negotiations in 1995, after TV3 tried to convince existing MMDS and cable television providers to drop UTV from its channels.. In January of this year TV3 launched a lobbying campaign against the establishment of UTV Ireland, a month later, the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland signed a contract with UTV.. Recently sky added ITV1,2,3,4 and others to the sky listing. but they cannot be viewed in Ireland.. why is that?.. well TV3 Ireland is the problem here. They have rights to many ITV shows. They are preventing UTV, and any of the ITV channels from appearing on the Sky Ireland EPG.

    You can get ITV 1,2,3,4 AND PLUS one’s on sky and have been able for the past few years from Ireland. A;; you have to do is manually add the frequencies to the section labelled “other channels”

    TV3 always championed the free-market while criticising the government/public funded RTE but now they have an actual free-market threat they want the evil government to stop it.

    It won’t be long before their new premises will be in TV3′s current one. TV3 are toast from here on it.

    If this is the end of tv3 it’s the best news of the day! Hopefully they don’t hire anybody from that horrible station.

    @Mark Kelly

    Hiring former TV3 personnel wouldn’t be bad for UTV Ireland because UTV has more resources than TV3 has. TV3′s news coverage is a joke; it is essentially non-existent on Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays.

    As long as they keep it to off air executives, that’s cool. No Martin King’s or that obnoxious tít Mark Cagney.

    An all-Ireland “One Show” from these provincial bureau would be a refreshing change from politicians and other noisy attention seekers. A bit more of the everyday from across our island and what’s on where.

    Does anyone know what will happen to the ITV(1) shows not shown on TV3/UTV Ireland such as the ITV news at ten, their morning output like Good Morning Britain and This Morning? This content will continue to air on UTV Northern Ireland being the local ITV network, but from what I can see will disappear from the screens in The Republic, unless you can somehow get UTV Northern Ireland or ITV. I personally feel we are going to loose more then gain with UTV Ireland replacing the UTV.

    Content like the ITV News at Yen will not disappear from ROI – you’ll still able to tune into UTV NI as you always did. Besides, who tunes into the ITV News at Ten anyway!?

    @Patrick Mooney

    It will probably be the case that UTV Ireland will replace UTV NI on UPC. It’ll probably be the case that UTV NI will still be available on terrestrial overspill, Freesat and also on Sky by manual tuning in the Other Channels section.
