Do you have any letters or mementos from World War 1? Experts want a look

The World War 1 Roadshow ‘Europe Goes to War, Ireland’s Part’ is on at Trinity College next Saturday.

IRELAND’S PART IN World War 1 will be explored next week at Trinity College Dublin.

The World War 1 Roadshow will be hosted by the college next Saturday in partnership with RTÉ Radio 1 and the National Library of Ireland.

Members of the public are being invited to bring in family items, letters and mementos related to the war to be evaluated and catalogued by a team of experts.

The roadshow will also feature a series of pop up talks and lectures on the Great War.

Trinity Professor James Wickham said: “The World War One Roadshow forms part of Trinity College Dublin’s engagement with the Decade of Commemorations.

It will also remember the over 450 Trinity College graduates who died in the Great War.

“We want it to be an informative and thought provoking day concerning Ireland’s part in World War One.

We want people to come away from it with a greater understanding of Ireland’s role in what was one of the bloodiest conflicts of our time.

As part of the Family History Collections Day of World War 1 – experts from the National Library of Ireland and Trinity College Dublin will upload precious items related to the war to an online archive.

It will be the first ever online European archive of private stories and documents from World War 1.

It’s being developed by Europeana – Europe’s digital library, museum and archive.

Head of Services with the National Library of Ireland, Katherine McSharry, said:

We know the Irish public have a wealth of items and stories to share in relation to World War 1, and we look forward to discovering more fascinating material during this event.

There will be plenty of entertainment on the day with pop up talks, covering different aspects of WW1, taking place every 15 minutes in the Trinity Long Room Hub, Fellows’ Square.

Meanwhile in the Trinity College Chapel,  readings with musical interludes charting various scenarios from WW1 will be performed.

Four actors will read from accounts, diary entries and love letters capturing a glimpse of the human side of battle as part of this unique event.

You can check out the schedule of events for the day here.

    “Ireland’s part in ww1″

John redmond was a disgrace, incidentally redmond is one of john brutons heroes, the other being charile windsor.

WW1 was a dick measuring contest,, belgium was no small nation, it was a colonial power responsible for the mutilation of millions of congolese, (chopping off the left hand of the negro)

The usa got involved because it’s banking system was going to collapse. So many lies about ww1, even 100 yeears later they can’t tell the truth.

    Good Luck @seeking

Anytime someone on here doesn’t go along with the self-hating pharisees of the establishment they are shouted down.

The ironic thing is that the rest of Europe views WW1 the same as you except for probably the UK, and of course the likes of RTE, INM, etc.

Where are our actual historians hiding?

Will the anti-Catholic Austria recruitment used in the North by Britain be shown or the help Catholic Belgium used in the South?

Or perhaps the treatment of Irishmen as fodder, denied equal standing, not being allowed form a regiment, only a division.

Shot at dawn more than any other soldiers.

    Doubt it.

Seeking, do you see the highlighted bit about people coming away with a greater understanding of the conflict? That seems to be lost on you.

Wrong. There were many Irish regiments. And one Irish division. There was no conscription in Ireland north or south during either World War. English, Scottish and Welsh soldiers got it far worse.

@Seeking there was a human element to that war that’s been lost on you, not the least of which was 49,400 Irish families lost a son or father.

“There were many Irish regiments. And one Irish division.”

Wrong, there was no regiment allowed for the nationalist volunteers, but there was for unionist volunteers.

“English, Scottish and Welsh soldiers got it far worse.”

Well they didn’t, and they are British so they were fighting for their empire.

“Ah Willie Mc Bride , I can’t help wonder why
Do those that lie here, know why they died
And did they believe when they answered the call
Did they really believe that this war would end wars
But the sorrow, the suffering, the glory, the pain
The killing and dying, was all done in vain
For young Willie Mc Bride it all happened again
And again and again and again and again”

For so many families the words of this song tell a tragic and painful story and a telegram and the death penny in a cardboard box is all that remains to remember a young teenager who waved goodbye and is buried too far away for his family to lay a bunch of flowers.

Innocent times or so young men thought. Many experienced nothing beyond the farm and it must have seemed such an adventure. We go out there in our well pressed uniforms sign songs out flank the hun and they will surrender jolly goid fun hurrah.

Reality was more horror then a human can cope with.

As much as I enjoyed laughing to blackadder that final over the top scene hits you.

It was a great pity those who organised this event did not try to avoid clashing with the Annual R.B.L Commemoration in Islandbridge. It could only happen in Ireland, I would have loved to attend but Islandbridge is more important to family members many of whom have memorabilia..
