A “PROFOUNDLY TROUBLED” United States condemned reports Saturday that an American teenager detained in Israel was “severely beaten” while in police custody, amid heightened tensions with Palestinians.
The parents of Tariq Abu Khder, a 15-year-old cousin of a Palestinian youth murdered earlier this week, have told AFP that their son was arrested in Shuafat after being beaten by police on Thursday during his holiday stay in the area.
State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said the United States “strongly condemn(s) any excessive use of force,” referring to the alleged beating.
Clashes have erupted in recent days, sparked by the abduction and murder of Tariq’s cousin Mohammed Abu Khder, 16, as autopsy reports showed he was burned alive.
Palestinians said Jewish extremists killed him in revenge for the kidnapping and murder in the West Bank last month of three Israeli teenagers.
Tariq was still in Israeli custody, Psaki confirmed, adding that a US consulate official had visited him Saturday.
“We are profoundly troubled by reports that he was severely beaten while in police custody,” Psaki said in a statement.
“We are calling for a speedy, transparent and credible investigation and full accountability for any excessive use of force.”
Rocket fire targeting Israel from Gaza has also increased, raising fears of an escalation with the Islamist movement Hamas, which controls the Palestinian enclave.
“We reiterate our grave concern about the increasing violent incidents, and call on all sides to take steps to restore calm and prevent harm to innocents,” Psaki said.

A video circulating on social media shows what appears to be Israeli border police beating and kicking a handcuffed semi-conscious figure — believed to be Tariq — before dragging him away.
The parents, who saw their son in an Israeli hospital, said they were told Tariq had been arrested for being masked.
Police spokeswoman Luba Samri could not confirm it was Tariq in the video, but said the footage was from the arrest of a group of six Palestinians, including Tariq.
The justice ministry, meanwhile, said it was investigating the video.
Samri said police found a sling on Tariq, who had attacked police and resisted arrest, while others were throwing stones and Molotov cocktails, wounding six police.
Tariq is due to appear before a Jerusalem court on Sunday.

Some of the comments on this page alone advocate summary beatings of this child, the contemptible murder of 5 members of an Israeli family ( no relation to this case) and the constant referrals to the heinous murders of of 3 Israeli teens as a passive justification of this beating.
On one hand we have Palestinian “terrorists” on the other we have Jewish ” extremists”. Why are they called extremists and not terrorists which is what they are? Will they have their homes bulldozed? Will the police be prosecuted? Charles the people who look at Israel are not stupid and can spot the hypocritical nature of the State and regime a mile off and certainly don’t fall for the PR offensive that is wheeled out be the Israeli authorities. How can people show a sympathetic attitude to a State when it indulges in the very same acts of terrorism that it accuses Palestinians of carrying out?

It acts like a pariah state yet it is not treated like one.
Why is that.
America is only “troubled”when an American-Palestinian is beaten senseless by Israeli police. Psaki couldn’t say she outrightly condemned it. Now if an American-Israeli got the same treatment at the hands of Palestinian police the howls of condemnation would reach high heaven.

Before red thumbing, look at the video. Who ever was on the end of that beating would have a hell of a lot more injuries that a bruised, cut, swollen lip. That beating would nearly put you in intensive care. So whatever happened to this poor young lad it did not happen in that video.

People should look into the back story. Moments before, the teenager was throwing stones at the police. Stones can kill, he deserved a beating if he was being so irresponsible as to throw them at other people.
If you read the Electronic Intifada report on this story, you would know the judge asked why Jewish children brought before the court for stone throwing had no bruises on them, and all the Palestinian children had.

Taxi Bill, this story relates to the beating of one Palestinian youth and so that is why I am commenting on it. I have also commented on the murders of the 3 Israeli children and condemned it so I am not forgetting about them, I am just sticking to the point. I know that pro Israeli supporters are trying to use the murders of the 3 Israeli teens as justification for this act of barbarity and keep telling us not to forget about them. The thing is that there is no excuse for tit for tat killings and certainly no excuse for summary justice from the supposedly democratic upholders of law and order i.e the Israeli Security Forces.
