It may look like a near-miss, but this pilot did exactly what he was supposed to do

The Spanish aviation authorities say that there was no danger of the planes colliding.

Updated 22.46pm

THE SPANISH AVIATION authorities have said that there was never any danger of two planes colliding, despite a video of the incident going viral.

AENA, which runs most Spanish airports, told the El Mundo newspaper that an incident filmed over the weekend at Barcelona el-Prat airport was no reason for alarm.

The paper quotes the spokesperson as saying that the landing could have taken place because there was a sufficient space between the two planes.

The video, which has been viewed over two million times, shows a UTair Boeing 767-300 approaching to land when an Aerolineas Argentinas Airbus A340 taxis across the runway.

The pilot of the 767 is forced to pull up and execute a “go-around” manoeuvre.

AENA says that neither airline had presented a complaint over the incident and both planes were where they were supposed to be.

Robbie Garland of the National Flight Centre at Weston Airport says that the manoeuvre is fairly common.

“You would have it in your head that you might have to do a go-around right up until you land.

“You would train for these situations hundreds of times, so it’s likely that the pilot was doing exactly what he trained for.”
