TAOISEACH ENDA KENNY and Tánaiste Joan Burton are resuming talks on the reshuffle and the coalition’s priorities over the coming months in Government Buildings this evening.
The pair held five hours of talks over the course of yesterday where the focus was on the coalition’s agenda and what policies will be pursued over the remaining lifetime of the government.
Talks resumed after lunchtime today follow this morning’s regular Cabinet meeting with Burton and Kenny meeting for just over an hour before adjourning for Leaders’ Questions and other engagements this afternoon.
They are expected to resume talks this evening with talks on the imminent Cabinet reshuffle likely to feature prominently.
Sources on both sides of the talks have stressed that it has been just the Taoiseach and the Tánaiste in discussions over the past 24 hours with advisors kept outside the room. A spokesperson for Burton said it was intended to keep it that way.
Once deliberations conclude it is expected there will be a formal announcement to the Dáil of the new composition of the Cabinet.
There has been no indication as to what time this will take place although there is growing expectation there will be an announcement tomorrow.
Once the new Cabinet is announced to the Dáil the Ministers, both newly-appointed and reassigned, will travel to the Áras to receive their ministerial seals from the President.
It’s expected that the Taoiseach and the Tánaiste will then hold a press conference at Government Buildings.
The appointment of Ministers of State or junior ministers will require a Cabinet meeting where the Taoiseach makes recommendations for approval. This could also take place tomorrow.
