THE INHABITANTS OF Charlemont Gardens and Ffrench Mullen Street in Dublin made for one of the city’s oldest communities.
Photographer Jeanette Lowe, whose depiction of life in Pearse House led to her work being displayed in London’s National Portrait Gallery, was invited to photograph the flats on Charlemont Street before most of them were demolished earlier this year.
There are still 50 families living in the remaining block on Tom Kelly Road, off Charlemont Street and these are waiting for new apartments to be built on the site. When the new development is finished, they will be joined by those who were moved out to alternative accommodation as their blocks were torn down.
Jeanette’s pics show a community stopped in its tracks, with personal effects and modest pieces of furniture sitting in the decaying flats, as if waiting for their owners to return and claim them.
Waiting by Jeanette Lowe can be seen at Flat 53, Tom Kelly Road, Charlemont Street Monday to Friday, 11-5pm, Saturday and Sunday 12-5pm until 25 July.
This exhibition is part of the PhotoIreland Festival 2014, currently running at venues across Ireland.

I just keep envisioning the former residents saying ‘Charriddlemont’ like a character from a Ross O’ Carroll-Kelly book.
Makes you really wonder what we’ll leave behind. In a way of love it to resemble these. Something peaceful about the silence.
