Mayor cracks down on Magaluf pub crawls by British and Irish tourists

Police are investigating a recent incident involving an 18-year-old woman from Northern Ireland.

THE MAYOR OF Calvià, the Mallorca region which covers the popular resort of Magaluf, has passed a new law giving authorities tighter control over controversial tourist pub crawls.

The move comes after a recent incident in which an 18-year-old woman from Northern Ireland was filmed performing sex acts on a group of men during a bar crawl organised by the company Carnage Magaluf.

Announcing the clamp-down yesterday, Calvià mayor Manuel Onieva took the opportunity to express his “total rejection and anger at the activities which were carried out in a video which is currently on the social media circuit.”

Onieva also confirmed that a police investigation into the incident is under way.

In a statement yesterday, he laid out the terms of the new restrictions:

Each pub crawl guide will have to wear a specific jacket so local police can monitor those operating in the region and identify those that have been approved.Pub crawl groups can now not exceed more than 50 people and if any operators exceed this legal capacity, they will be fined.

The law is set to come into effect later this month.

Despite attracting hundreds of thousands of British and Irish tourists each year, the image of the Calvia region has been hit in recent years by Magaluf’s reputation for binge-drinking and public disorder.

The region’s tourism board has even taken on the services of London-based PR company KBC, since 2012, in order to clean up its image in the UK.

Once care home residents and frontline healthcare workers are vaccinated we should not put up with any more restrictions on our freedoms and livelihoods. The vulnerable can continue to isolate until they are vaccinated – surely that makes more sense than all of us doing it and having hundreds of thousands on the PUP

@Newto2016: Most vulnerable people don’t have the ability to lock themselves away from the outside world. In a lot of cases, they live with other people and/or they are cared for by other people. If the virus is widespread in the community, then those people will pick it up and bring it to them. Saying “go isolate until this is over and it’ll be grand” isn’t realistic and it shows a complete lack of understanding.

@Newto2016: Anyone thinking these restrictions will be suddenly lifted is deluded. NEPHET now have too much control over our freedoms and the next thing will be, level 3 until everybody is vaccinated and you won’t be able to fly in or out of the Country without a vaccine.. No entry to concerts, football matches without a vaccine. I’d say every flu season from now on masks will be mandatory and social distancing in place. The Government and media have People so afraid they’ll accept anything from now on

@Daniel Roche: Each to their own but I won’t be wearing one once the vaccine is out.. Life has to return to normal and masks etc should be personal choice as should any vaccine. From the very start we were told to wear masks to protect the vulnerable, when they’re vaccinated all restrictions should be lifted. End of Story

@Eoin McLove: They’ve already indicated we’ll be in level 5 until the nursing homes are vaccinated anyway. They’ve not said it directly but the dates marry up. Leo said possibly end of Feb for lifting level 5 and the HSE have said they’ll have the nursing homes vaccinated by the end of Feb.

We’ll see how they handle the remaining vulnerable in society after that I suppose

@Eoin McLove: Why Sweden? They have one of the lower death rates recently of 5.2 per 100,000 in the last 14 days. Higher than here but nowhere near as bad as Czechia, Poland, Italy etc etc. In fact most countries have a higher death rate than Sweden.

The goverment has lost the people through sheer mismanagement, theres a reason why the WHO said lockdowns should be used as a last resort, because people get complacent and worn out by them, we’ve just headed into our 3rd lockdown in 9 months, people won’t listen anymore, politicians and NPHET have bottled it, lockdowns arent a solution anymore because people dont abide by them simple as, the more they lockdown in the future the less and less people are going to comply.

Well I hope they will include carers at home looking after disabled Children and Adults. After all our Children are mixing with others and health care staff at day service. If carers end up sick it’s going to cost the Country a lot of money to look after the Children and Adults they care for. So M. Martin think on.
