Italian job for Chinese as private equity firm snaps up Milano's

The first Irish branch of the chain opened in Dublin in 1995.

ITALIAN RESTAURANT CHAIN Milano’s is to be sold to a Chinese player as part of a €1.1 billion deal.

The buyer is Hony, a Chinese private equity firm that has multiple manufacturing, retail and media interested in Asia.

The chain, which is known as Pizza Express in the United Kingdom, has over 500 restaurants, with around a dozen in Ireland. It employs 9,000 people and recently expanded into China, opening its first store in Beijing.

The first branch of the chain opened on Dublin’s Dawson Street in 1995.

Pizza Express chief executive Richard Hodgson said that the purchase is “a very positive development at an exciting time for the business”.

The chain was previously owned by restaurant giant The Gondola Group.

Hony chief executive John Zhao said that he is optimistic about growing the brand in Asia.

“With PizzaExpress, we have the opportunity to leverage our local expertise to accelerate its growth in the Chinese market, as well as to continue to drive its business forward in the UK.”

Without getting in to perceptions or generalities, how is this legal when the law clearly prohibits gender discrimination?

I wouldn’t give them 50/50 on surviving a challenge in court. No one is likely to bother as we’ve all got better things to be doing but I’d imagine the legality of giving someone a competitive advantage on the basis of gender would be far from a forgone conclusion.

Similar programmes for ethnic minorities have been upheld in the UK under the same EU-based equalities legislation.

How long before people jump on to thread and moan about how this is so sexist and women hate men and other such terrific contributions? Oh wait. They’re here already. These funds are intended to address imbalances in business demographics. Get over yeerselves. At the end of the day, it’s more gutsy people trying to start businesses and create jobs in a country that is starved of these two things.

I’m not saying its right or wrong, just asking how on earth it’s possibly legal. That’s all. I thought the law was very specific on this.

I would recommend researching “substantive equality” as that is the approach that the law takes in these matters.

How long before someone tries to justify blatant sexism. Oh wait, you have already.
At the end of the day(beautifully creative phrase), if you were truly interested in gutsy people(a complete contradiction, as it’s only women allowed) trying to start a business and create jobs, then the funding would go to the best idea and ability to implement and you would oppose this measure.

What a waste of money since this country is a dead duck. We simply owe too much. Something like 30 -40 grand per head (not per worker, but for every man, woman or child in this country). Thats too much. Its game over unless we default. We d be better off leaving the eu and becoming a US State
