RYANAIR HAS TODAY launched an updated version of its app today which allows you to not only browse and book flights but also check-in and use your phone as a boarding pass.
The airline company first launched its app, charging customers €3 to download it. The services on the older version of the app were limited to bookings, baggage check-ins and timetables.
This updated version, however, is free to download on in iTunes and for Android.
It is available in English, Italian and Spanish, with further language versions to follow, the company said.
Speaking in Dublin today, Chief Marketing Officer Kenny Jacobs said the app is part of the company’s new ‘Always Getting Better’ programme which saw it ease up its strict carry-on baggage policy and simplify its website.

Thanksbetojaysis. Somehow my printer always runs out of ink just as I need to leave the country and it has caused me a lot of meltdowns trying to get my boarding pass sorted so I can fly home and visit the folks. Cycling two miles uphill at 1am to print my pass at a 24hr library while even the local bus company lets you use your phone has had me cursing the technological backwardness of Ryanair on more than one occasion.
Like the charge to use the toilets.

Will be flying Ryanair from Eindhoven to Dublin in a couple of months – looking forward to testing the app’s functionality.
Most major airlines around the world have using this technology for years so it’s nothing new.

@Boganity I don’t think Ryanair (or anyone here) is claiming this is something “new”, it’s just an additional service they’re now providing.

I presented one of these boarding ‘cards’ using The Aer Lingus app to immigration in Dublin and the Garda behind the desk said ‘what’s this’? When I said it was a boarding card, his response was ‘what do I look like a computer?’ I felt like saying something smart, but thought best not to.
Seems immigration have no means to read these electronic boarding cards.

Nope, I’m an engineer working and living abroad. With Ryanair I can fly home (regularly & cheaply) to see family back in Ireland.
Lest we all forget…… It used to be over 200 punts to fly to London before Ryanair knocked the snot off them.! Now you can go for less than 20 euro and we want all the bells and whistles .It’s true that we are a nation of begrudgers …never happy….whinge whinge. Take the ferry or ocean liner instead

I hope that it is tied in with Passbook on iPhone.
I flew easy jet recently and their app is connected to passbook and on the morning if my flight I was able to access my boarding pass straight from my lock screen. Fierce handy.
I look forward to using this in the future, very nice interface also!
What happens if your phone goes dead before you get to the boarding pass scanner?
If it happens as you arrive in the airport you would just pay for a reprint of your boarding card at the Ryanair desk but not sure what would happen once you’ve gone past security etc, maybe they’ll have that option at the gate also for the €20 or whatever it costs.
They make you pay 60E for a 5 min recharge
You make sure your phone is charged before you get to Airport……
Then you’re a very silly person to let your phone’s battery die, before you get to the scanner. There’s also plenty of power outlets available in airports. You could always switch your phone to ‘Airplane mode’ to retain battery on your way to the scanner if you have little battery left.
If it’s like the Aer Lingus one, it’ll be a link to a webpage that can be called up from any device or even printed.
Who would go to the Airport with their Boarding Details on an uncharged phone?? !!

Fair dues to Ryanair… It is these little things that will mKe there airline more popular and profitable…
I would suggest simple service supplied by there competitors. Allow passengers to swap times or nearby places at the airport for nothing… I.e if you arrive two hours early to Dublin airport you czarist ask to get in early flight to London if seat is free, or you can swap from Gatwick to Stansted…
I am a regular flyer, 100+ flights some years… In bad weather, late connection or unforeseen circumstances this can be great ( one of your competitors does this)… It takes away stress and is very much appreciated… No obligation to hold seats or anything, just try your best…
Praising Ryanair for introducing something that other airlines have been doing for 18 months or more.
How much have they fleeced from people, particularly unsuspecting Americans (see airlinequality.com) for reprinting boarding passes while Lufthansa and even Aer Lingus have had electronic boarding passes for quite some time now?
O’Leary is doing this because he has to. Not because he wants to. He’s held out as long as is feasible. The hard questions on this were beginning to be asked and he didn’t want to lose business to Easyjet, WizzAir and Air Berlin in particular.
They’ve also saved a lot of people a lot of money.
I wouldn’t call it “praising”, I don’t think anyone here is bowing to Michael O’ Learly/Ryanair for this. It’s certainly appreciated as it reduces the need to print a piece of paper (which to some may be a little awkward).

I briefly skimmed the reviews on the site, the negatives appeared to be either about the strike in France (out of Ryanair’s control), people not following the T&Cs, not having travel insurance, or lacking common sense.

Because according to their respective financial reports the €523 million Ryanair made is not ‘significantly larger’ than the €527 IAG the parent group of BA made…
Good man Drew, I think you’ll find that’s IAG’s operating profit vs. Ryanair’s net profit. IAG’s net profit was €147 million vs. €569 for Ryanair. So yes, it is ‘significantly larger’.

Of course it should be welcomed. But O’Leary should also be asked why it wasn’t done years ago.
That’s if the plane is on time, or it has not been cancelled beforehand; fly with Ryanair, the cattle truck airline!!!

Can you check in using the app?

I used a code on my phone for an Aer Lingus flight; worked fine in Dublin but got held up in Prague because they couldn’t scan it; poor fella was awful confused as I tried to pass him my phone!
What if you take a screenshot of your boarding pass and scan it at the gate? Or will it only work on the official Ryanair app?
I’m sure you could put the PDF of your boarding pass on your phone and would work, I believe the brightness on your phone needs to be reasonably high for the scanner to read it.
Of course downloading the Ryanair app is not all that difficult. But just wondering how finicky Ryanair are prepared to be on this :)
Aer Lingus using this technology ages, as well as many other airlines. Very handy. Ryanair are way behind the times here.
