GARTH BROOKS HAS tonight released a statement to say that all five concerts won’t go ahead.
The statement reads as follows:
I have always been advised to NEVER send a message in ‘the moment.’It is said it is best to take a walk, wait awhile, and think about it. With that said, I just received the news the Irish council cannot change their earlier ruling to not allow the licenses for all five shows.To say I am crushed is an understatement. All I see is my mother’s face and I hear her voice. She always said things happen for a reason and for the right reason.As hard as I try, I cannot see the light on this one. So it is with a broken heart, I announce the ticket refunds for the event will go as posted by TicketMaster.I want to thank the Irish authorities for going the distance for all of us who wanted to share songs and dance together. I really want to thank all the people around the world that continued to think good thoughts that this would actually happen.
Most of all, to Peter Aiken and those 400,000 people who believed enough to go through what they have been through to get to this point…I love you, always have, always will. I encourage any and all of them that can come see the show, at some point around the world, to bring your Irish flags and waive them proudly at the concerts. I will be looking for you.…garth.
Aiken Promotions have also issued a statement stating that they “regret to announce that despite pursuing all possible solutions, the 5 concert Garth Brooks Comeback Special Event at Croke Park is cancelled. No concerts will take place”.
The ticket return process will begin on Thursday 17 July at 9am through Ticketmaster.

The only injection into the national economy was coming the foreigners. All the other money, one would assume, is disposable income and will be spent elsewhere in the economy. Bad news for the Dublin economy and the street traders who now have 50000 Stetsons to sell ( and who probably operate in the black economy anyway) but nationally, very little impact.

Well 100% percent of my refund is going back to savings , the €60 on petrol will be saved the meals for myself and the girlfriend will be saved Il be staying in that night now already have plans to watch godfather trilogy so the local shop might get €5 out of me for some coke and popcorn but between myself and the misses we would easily have spent €200 that day that’s now all been kept in our pockets , so if you think it has no effect on the economy your a fool
Whether there was one, or one thousand objections, the matter would have been looked at exactly the same way. The quantity of objections would have had no sway on the decision.
If the council had raised concerns before the licence application was made, they’d have been accused of interference and have prejudiced the whole process. Aiken put in his application, expecting it to be rubberstamped to go, the way big business always managed to by greasing the right palms. This time the rule set down by An Bord Pleanala were looked at and instead of just ruling out the concerts completely due to 1D having used up Croke Park’s quota for the year, the weekend gigs were granted permission. It’s pure greed from Garth Brooks that he threw his toys out of the pram and demanded all 5 or nothing. Garth got his way, despite having the opportunity to play 3 gigs.

It was straightforward. The permitted number of concerts had been held already. If Aiken had approached DCC first it might have been a different story. He tried to pull a fast one and got caught out, and the people who bought tickets and booked travel and accommodation are the losers in all this.
The whole will he or won’t he! Had tickets but with all the drama I couldn’t give a s**t the concerts aren’t going ahead nor do I care if he ever sets a foot in Ireland again!
As for Croke Park venue and future concerts, I would cautiously think twice before buying tickets for any licensed event.

When the event was announced it was only Croke park. There is a rumoured world tour but this was due to be his only gig. For a world tour there would be multiple stages so the your would be continuous and each stage would require a level of customisation for each venue, so, cop yourself on!

Hopefully, lesson learned for the GAA and Peter Aiken and also for the Department of the Environment. Clean up/modernize the way these events are licensed. Very unfortunate for 400,000 innocent punters. Looking to the future it may dawn on people that Croke Park is a great stadium in the wrong location and that it will be limited in how it can serve the people of Ireland and further afield!
It serves what it’s supposed to serve first and foremost – the great club, county and national players and spectators of the great games that are Gaelic Games. Hence, it is a magnificent server of the people of Ireland. Quit your crying. We have great sport here in the country and you have obviously failed to notice this if you think Croke Park is not serving us well. Enjoy your soccer / cricket / rugby.

I don’t get it. Garth agreed to play five nights, Ireland said no. No other country could have such a ridiculous licensing system and then blame the artist when he refuses to compromise! You wouldn’t be so blase if this had happened in London and you had paid €130 for tickets and another €250 for flights to see Daniel O’Donnell, Spare a thought for those overseas prepared to travel all the way to Dublin who have lost out financially due to this p@ss poor performance from all concerned. And when we booked the tickets, there was only three shows and no mention of “Subject To License”. Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

Mark, Just to be clear, it wasn’t so obvious on the ticket website at the time of booking, and I did actually attempt to buy more tickets after this fiasco broke out, just to check where I had missed this important information in my rush to obtain tickets.Up to the point of paying, having been allocated two more tickets for the 27th (“common sense” said don’t actually purchase any more) I couldn’t find anywhere on the website that mentioned they were subject to license. Not until the ticket were issued on our original purchase did we see this. It is apparently common practice over there to sell subject to license, but it’s not something I’ve ever experienced, so common sense doesn’t really come into it. Our misfortune comes from being one of those where a simple ticket refund doesn’t cover all our costs. And yes, it was a gamble to purchase the non-refundable flights to dublin, but to pay full flexi-fare was a non starter. As was staying in Dublin which we would have preferred, when hotel prices had trebled or even quadrupled in one instance. And people talk about greed?
It’s certainly begs some questions doesn’t it? Why didn’t Garth announce his intention to go up to five shows if demand was there? If he has (as alleged) increased the stage size and production show due to the extra dates, did he send a second ship with the additional items? Or had he always envisaged doing five shows? Why didn’t he make sure the promoter had the licenses before agreeing to put the tickets on sale? Why did the promoter sell tickets before checking he could get the additional licenses? Was he just sat there saying no news is good news? why didn’t the council speak up sooner when they saw the tickets on sale? Why did the GAA even take on the concerts when they apparently were already up to their planning limit for this year? And if that’s the case, why did DCC allow ANY of the concerts? Surely if three is all they can have a year, and they had three with 1D, then none of the concerts should be approved? So moaning about sticking to the planning law is a bit weird when they already broke it with their original decision don’t you think? To be honest, it was some daft official sat rubbing his hands mischievously saying “oh yes, Mr Aiken is going to regret that isn’t he, when we eventually get to the planning meeting”…
It’s just totally unprofessional all round – this could have been stopped before costing anyone any serious money.
I’ve certainly learnt a costly lesson, that’s for sure – having not purchased concert tickets before, I didn’t know you were allowed to sell something before you actually had permission to hold the event. I’ll know in future, although it’s unlikely I’ll purchase tickets again that entail flying abroad and incurring extra costs – I’ll wait until they turn up in our local venue (but not thieving Garth, he’s had his chance). It was a one off and a costly episode at that. It was my daughter’s birthday treat and we could have done a lot with the £200 we have lost.
Regardless of all this Mr Fantastic, i was brought up better than to take pleasure in someone else’s misfortune. But hey, as they say in the states, what goes around… Crystal ball, inevitability, call it what you will… Twitter that.
Nadia, that’s what I’ve asked the UK consumer trading standards authority to look into. I feel they have breeched their contract and I’m going to see if I can sue for consequential losses. I hope anyone in our position does the same. We probably won’t get anywhere with the promoter being an irish company too and the artist being American – no doubt UK trading laws wont apply to either. But nevertheless, we will pursue it.

I absolutely agree with you, Robert, that it’s wrong to sell concert tickets before the planning has been given, particularly as the yearly allocation of three concerts had already been used. Also, Brooks was given permission for three of the concerts so technically he is in breach of his contract.

Absolute disgrace that DCC could be so pedantic and stubborn in not reversing their original decision . This is a far bigger issue than people are making out and has not only lost millions for the country but cost many struggling businesses thousands in stock which is now useless, not to mention the hundreds of people who were promised work for the five days and now have none. Yes I understand that tickets were sold without a licence but that is the backward system we have and the way things have always been done. Once news leaked that some of the objections were faked that should have been the excuse to then allow the concerts go ahead. The city manager and anyone else involved in this complete and utter shambles should be fired immediately!

Dreadful mess. Financial disaster and the losers are the fans and travelling fans plus the tourist infrastructure here. However I was sickened at the “wave your flags at me”and travel to see me attitude of mr brooks. This mess highlights the sheer arrogance and tardiness of our planning laws. Everything should have been sorted 6-9 months ago and when licences were issued then sell. City council need to look at the mess they have created by simple slow response. Aiken promotions need to examine their selling of tickets policy before a licence is issued. Garda report needs to be forthcoming soon on the false signatures on the residents complaint . The GAA need to examine proper policing / stewarting before and after events so that local residents do not have to put up with disgusting behaviour of “fans”
Finally I hope that even though the civil powers made a stupendous cock up that proportionate blame be given to the diva mentality of a singer who could and should have accepted at least the final attempt.
