THE ISRAELI ARMY said it has agreed to a UN request to halt its attacks on the Gaza Strip for five hours tomorrow on humanitarian grounds.
“Between 10:00 and 15:00 (0700-1200 GMT), the Israel Defence Forces will cease operational activity within the Gaza Strip and hold its fire,” it said, correcting an earlier statement which spoke of a six-hour break.
UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East peace process, Robert Serry, earlier told Israel’s Channel Two television, that he had asked the military for a “humanitarian pause” in its Gaza offensive and that, if it agreed, he would ask Gaza militants to follow suit.
“If it happens, I will also call on Hamas and other militant factions to reciprocate, stop firing rockets and respect the humanitarian pause,” his spokeswoman quoted him as telling the television.
It is in the interest of all the citizens of Gaza, in order to give them a chance to go to the hospital, get health care or get food.
Hamas said it was considering the request.
“Hamas has been informed about the UN proposal for a truce of several hours tomorrow,” Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri told AFP.
The proposal is being studied and when a decision has been taken it will be announced officially in a statement.
Terrified Children
Earlier today the sound of a blast cut through the air on Gaza’s beach, drawing people out of seafront buildings to see a crowd of terrified children sprinting along the sand.
They screamed as they ran, smoke rising behind them from an Israeli strike.
Panicked onlookers shouted at them to run away from the scene, and towards the safety of a hotel.
And then another blast hit the site, there was an orange glow and more smoke.
A hut used by Palestinian fishermen was set ablaze by the strike.
The children continued to run, but some of them were left behind. Four of them were killed.
Afterwards, emergency services spokesman Ashraf al-Qudra gave names of the four, all cousins: Ahed Atef Bakr, aged 10, Zakaria Ahed Bakr, also 10. Mohamed Ramez Bakr, nine, and Ismail Mohamed Bakr, 11.
The other children, some crying, and others bleeding, ran into a hotel, where staff and journalists scrambled to help them.
Thirteen-year-old Hamed Bakr had shrapnel in his chest and was crying, “It hurts, my chest hurts.”
Those present worked to clean and dress his wounds and those of two other injured children while ambulances were called.
It was unclear if Wednesday’s strikes were the result of naval shelling, which frequently hits part of the Gaza coastline, or from Israeli warplanes.
Tragic outcome
Several hours after the strikes, the Israeli military in a statement described the deaths as “tragic” and said it was investigating the incident.
“Based on preliminary results the target of this strike was Hamas terrorist operatives,” the statement said.
The reported civilian casualties from this strike are a tragic outcome.
At least 220 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza in the nine days since the start of the conflict between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas running the coastal strip.
Militants in Gaza have fired hundreds of rockets into Israel, killing one.
The four bodies of the children were later taken to Abu Hasira mosque, near where the boys had died.
The boys were laid out, wrapped in the yellow flags of the Fatah party – the Palestinian rival to the Hamas movement – in front of mourners.
“We come from God and to God we shall return,” the imam overseeing the funeral prayers said.
Relative Khamis Bakr, 47, shook with anger as he spoke.
They were playing on the beach, they’d gone there to get away from Beach Camp because there was a lot of shelling there.
“They walked right into their deaths.”
Zakaria’s grandfather pushed through the mourners to the four small bodies and kneeled down, apparently in shock.
“The children were just playing, they had told one of their mothers that they were going to the beach,” he said.
We didn’t know anything had happened, and then we heard on the radio that there had been a strike, and people from the Bakr family had been killed.
“And then I knew that the children were gone.”

bitcoin is a fad. it cannot scale enough to be truly relevant vis a vis traditional payment networks for speed or capacity.
all-in, it is more expensive than fiat as many people will need to convert from and back to fiat in order to transact in bitcoin as they prefer to exit due to price volatility.
security-wise it is a hacker’s dream.
it will be a victim of its own success as authorities don’t like it and won’t permit it to usurp sovereign currencies, anti-moneylaundering or taxation.
attractive bitcoin features will be adopted by new sovereign-controlled currencies, leaving bitcoin as being a mere historic inspiration for better things to come.
bitcoin price is doomed to a hyper deflationary spiral given nearly half of all bitcoin have already been lost forever and much of the rest is being hoarded, killing liquidity and creating a bubble of tulip-esque proportions. There is more incentive to hoard it than use it to transact. That jeopardises the incentive for the miners, who are massive hoarders, and who are already in a very unhealthy position of ultimate power to control bitcoin and define its future for their own interests.
Started reading your Comme t and almost bounced down to completely disagree. However, apart from your first point, I actually completely agree.
I wouldn’t call it more expensive either. It COULD get to a point where a fiat conversion isn’t necessary, making it the cheapest.
Hoarding is its biggest problem. It’s Hoarding and using it as an “investment” which is causing the volatility which is causing those using it to convert immediately.
I really wanted it to succeed but there’s just not enough of it. Too few people control too much share of total coins. Have of Bitcoins owners fancy themselves professional investors. It’s incredibly useful for transactions. I’ve used it quite a bit. Volatility ruins it.
Sounds the same as Ripple which isn’t doing much business.
A lot of my mates tried signing up for the “free” stellars and got bounced.
Off to a very bad start.
My biggest fear for bitcoin is that some day some very large company like Facebook or Google will create or adapt some new coin that will appeal to the vast majority of its users and then the masses. The problem with BTC is that it was the first crypto, it’s already quite bloated and slow in comparison to newer POS coins and you would need about €10000 to start mining it in any sort of meaningful way at home making bitcoin a big business only coin which is not what crypto is about. I did think at one time that if BTC was to fail all other coins would follow but I’m not sure about now seeing some of the innovation in altcoins.
