RTE is looking for members of the public to join its board

Here’s your chance…

IF YOU WERE in a position to have a say in how our national broadcaster is run, what would be your first move?

Rather than taking it out on your long-suffering remote control, or boring those around you to tears, take note – an Oireachtas Committee is looking for applications to join the board of RTE.

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on Transport and Communications has announced they are looking for “expressions of interest” from members of the public, who might eventually end up getting appointed to a number of state boards.

There are a few requirements, as you might imagine. In order to be considered for the board of RTE (or TG4, or the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland), you’ll need to have experience in a couple of these areas:

  • Media affairs
  • Public service broadcasting
  • Arts, music, sport or culture
  • Legal or regulatory affairs

Anyone hoping to get on the board of TG4 must also “be able to communicate proficiently in the Irish language.”

Think you might have what it takes? Here’s how to apply, according to a statement yesterday by Committee Chairman John O’ Mahony TD:

Those putting forward their names should attach a short history of their work experience, detailing which of the criteria for appointment they satisfy, as well as a copy of their CV.

All of that needs to be emailed to jctc@oireachtas.ie

The RTÉ Board is the governing authority of the national broadcaster, and has six members.

Scroll down for details on appointments to state boards, and a full list of requirements.

In order to be a TG4 board member one must have proficiency in Irish, yet it is not a requirement for the Junior Minister?

    Interesting.

Since when do you need qualifications to be on a state board? I thought these jobs were reserved for politicians cronies.

It very much depends on the Minister. Some have a much better record than others at appointing outsiders.

Members of the public (related in some way to those in the Irish media clique)

Load of crap, I’d imagine there’s people already lined up for the jobs.

No Harry, you’d be bared because you don’t use punctuation in your sentences, not because of your age. They won’t know what you’re saying.

I’m the last person tubs would want on the board, I would be the first to suggest tendering to replace this “sub contractor”. I would also enquire about the tax implications of classifying him and his cohorts as “contractors”.

Revenue take a dim view of these arrangements in other industries

“must be able to communicate proficiently in the Irish language”. That effectively rules out approx. 95% of the population for a start. It should also be noted that many of our public representatives – for instance – cannot even communicate effectively, or speak, the English language – which for most of us is our first and only language. What a load of bollocks.

Must be able to speak Irish. It is discriminating against a lot of Irish people and Europeans. Another waste of money. The minority dictating to the majority. €6Billion per year on Irish. €2 Billion on Education, €2Billion on Translation and Government paperwork etc, and €2Nillion on associated funding for TG4, Gaelteacht Grants, etc.
imagine what Ireland could be with no austerity budgets, full employment , etc. please stop this madness for a hobby language for most. Support the minority groups but the rest of the country needs the money.

Agree with Vic – this is another political scam masquerading as political change. How many have been appointed to state boards from the the panels set up in 2011 – very few. Take Pat Rabbittes appointments to An Post before he was dumped over board by Joan – one an insurance actuary and the other a senior stockbroker. Very relevant qualifications for sorting and delivering letters to an out of touch Labour minister.
