FLASH FLOODING IS beginning to subside in Cork after heavy rain hit the county.
Met Éireann’s rainfall radar shows a heavy concentration of rain across the south of the country since early this afternoon.
Cork city centre reported flooding between Michael Collins Bridge and Brian Boru Bridge after the rain coincided with the River Lee’s high tide.
Met Éireann has warned that the heavy thundery showers will continue across Munster and also the Midlands this evening.

@SerotoninWars: The thing is, a lot of Americans don’t realise how deeply tailored and weaponised their media is. You can practically tell someone’s zip code by their worldview. One side’s fed a 24-hour stream of outrage and grievance, the other’s drowning in a moral purity contest. It’s not even about facts anymore it’s vibes and teams.
The country’s been turned into a giant algorithmic echo chamber where your worldview is spoon-fed to you by whichever cable channel or social feed you trust. People aren’t thinking for themselves, they’re being drip-fed ideology dressed up as ‘news’. The result? You get folks who think compassion is communism and others who think disagreeing is a hate crime.
No wonder they’re all at each other’s throats. It’s not entirely their fault it’s a system designed to keep people divided, riled up, and too distracted to ask who’s really pulling the strings.
@Anthony Curran: Totally agree. There are several characters around here who post 24/7 and are clearly deeply unfulfilled. Same offline. They want the red carpet rolled out in a world of 8 billion scrapping for happiness and resources. Solution – get out there, study, up-skill, help out, contribute? Nah, blame it on people who are making the most of their hand with less cards, more challenges and far more hurdles. They’re easy meat for all of the snake-oilers making coin by pulling the oldest trick in the book – look over there, blame the poor and desperate while I siphon off more cash and hoard even more of the resources. It’s beyond frustrating to see this playing out in arguably the most extreme manner in history.

@SerotoninWars: To be honest, I never thought with our history that I’d ever see it played out on our streets. Though hard to prove, I’m sure they’re being funded from outside the state. I’m sure there’s quite a few of them are agents of foreign states (one close neighbour comes to mind as they have quite a history of this kind of thing on these islands – infiltrating Republican groups, Loyalist groups, unions, advocacy groups etc). Seeing so-called Irish patriots arm in arm with hardline loyalists on the streets of Belfast, for me, it’s hard to stomach. I had the misfortune to have to walk through town 2 weeks ago while they had their march. I saw 2 racist incidents in the space of 5 minutes. Absolutely disgusting.
MAGA hats and Pope hats one’s a red cap for shouting nonsense, the other’s a white cap for whispering it with incense. Different costumes, same blind devotion.
Funny how every time someone tries to talk sense, the loudest mouths on both extremes lose their minds. One lot’s clinging to some fantasy of “greatness” that never was, waving flags like it’s going to reverse time and bring back the 1950s. The other side’s so obsessed with being the most morally pure, they burn the bridge the moment they reach it just to prove they’re too righteous to cross it.
Meanwhile, the rest of us the ones who still have a working brain and a shred of perspective are stuck watching this theatre of the absurd unfold like it’s some cursed episode of reality TV nobody asked for.
Progress doesn’t mean turning everything into a battleground. And tradition doesn’t mean worshipping the past like it’s sacred scripture. Maybe if both sides stopped shouting long enough to actually listen, we’d get somewhere. But hey, that would require nuance and we all know how allergic people are to that these days.
Perhaps the anti almost everything MAGA supports should shut their mealy gobs and actually listen for once?
No matter what right-leaning commentators and left-leaning commentators say Pope Leo XIV will preach gospel values. Centrist Christians will be inspired by his words about peace, family harmony, the moral value of work well done, and fair dealings between nations. Doctrinal matters are not decided by the mass media.

We all have a mind of our own. Why not use it and stop following other opinions. As far as Im concerned we have a new Pope, the excitement in St.Peters Square was very uplifting and I think this Pope will be loved by the people who matter. I welcome him with an open heart.
An interesting range of comments! I’ll only add one more that has not been mentioned: The media – as almost always – got their predictions wrong. I never saw the new Pope’s name mentioned once in their front runners list! What does that say about the media, and their motivations?
